Toki Tori: Crazy Fun, Crazy Cheap

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 01:00 PM

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/...=314388744&mt=8

"Toki Tori is a highly entertaining puzzle platformer like nothing you have seen before. Push your brain to the limit as you guide Toki Tori through 80 challenging levels spread over 4 mysterious worlds - collecting eggs as you go."

If you enjoy puzzle platformers (think Lemmings and Lode Runner) then just go buy this. Trust me when I tell you, it's one of the funnest games ever. It's easy enough to understand and start playing and gets to be challenging on a nice pace. You need to really think about where you're going to use your items, too, which means you have to plan out your course of attack. Failure to do so will result in having to start all over again.

Right now it's on sale in the app store for 80% off! $0.99 is almost too good to be true, so go grab it and enjoy. If you're already playing it, let us know what you think.

Apple Issues Warning About Heat

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.gearlog.com/2009/07/appl...dvisory_for.php

"Whether or not anecdotal reports of iPhones overheating are true or not, Apple has taken them seriously enough to reveal the presence of a temperature warning screen for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Here's the deal: an unknown but probably very small number of iPhones have been affected by overheating, to the point that some white iPhone 3GSes have allegedly turned pink. Sascha Segan, our phone analyst, said he hasn't seen any such problems with his iPhone 3GS, however."

There ya go. Heat can hurt electronics. Aren't you glad we have have companies to tell us stuff like this?

AT&T Visual Voicemail Not Behaving

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.macnn.com/articles/09/07...ying.voicemail/

"Several reports suggest AT&T may be experiencing problems with delayed alerts for voicemail messages sent to iPhones. Tech support representatives provided more insight to Glenn Tenney, a computer security expert who recently noticed that many messages took days before being listed in the iPhone's visual voicemail."

Yessiree bob, I've had this issue a lot lately. More than I ever did before. I think AT&T's network is starting to buckle a bit under the traffic. All told, this message took 15 seconds to get to my phone so I can't complain too much, but there are times when I'll get messages an hour later, or when the phone won't ring and I'll just get a voicemail indicator.

It's kind of a pain in the butt, but for the few times I actually get voicemail, it's not a dealbreaker.

Newton Enthusiasts, Here is Your Conference!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Classic Apple" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/07/01/have...-wwnc-2009-yet/

"If you haven't registered yet, you'd better get moving since WWNC 2009 starts on July 31st!"

I almost bought one of these when they were first introduced, but for some reason I didn't. If I had, I'd be all over this conference. Check out what they are going to cover, and all for only $55.00 US: Uses for Newton in Today's World, Newton Programming 101 for Beginners and How to Network the Newton are among several topics attendees will get to attend. I shouldn't jest, apparently there is a "vital community of Newton enthusiasts" out there. If you are one of them, you can register for this conference at the WWNC page, and it runs from July 31st through August 2nd in Vancouver, B.C.

Steve Jobs Isn't A Role Model

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 09:00 AM

http://cultofmac.com/fast-company-c...ole-model/12497

"Fast Company co-founder Bill Taylor has sparked a bit of a controversy on his Harvard Business Review blog by suggesting the heretical idea that — shock! — Steve Jobs might not be the best role model for other business leaders. Apparently, it’s deeply offensive to suggest that what makes Steve great are the exact qualities that typically make for bad management at most companies. He micro-manages every aspect of Apple, has been known to fire people with minimal cause, and perennially runs the risk of out-shining his company — which is particularly problematic when his health problems continue to cast into doubt his long-term prospects as CEO."

And yet Apple continues to thrive, proving yet again that when you run a company (instead of blathering on in a blog or newspaper about those who do) you follow your guts not some pre-defined formula for success. That's why Steve Jobs is the success he is and Apple is the company it is. In the article, numerous times, Bill Taylor mentions the saying "Trust the art, not the artist." I say it's the artist that makes the painting, not the theory of the painting that makes the artist.

The truth is, there's nothing about Bill Taylor that equates to real-world business experience. Unlike Jobs, Taylor has never been a CEO of a company. In his own bio he calls himself a writer, speaker, and entrepreneur, although except for founding the massive flop Fast Company which, as far as I know, no one outside of Silicon Valley reads at all, none of his business ventures have brought him any great successes otherwise he wouldn't be blogging for a publication.

He may be a successful writer, but he's not been a successful CEO, proving that he's probably spent entirely too much time talking about business theory and not enough time actually doing business. At least he's good at linkbaiting, though.

Jobs succeeds because he broke the mold. That's the whole point. He does things his way. Anyone who claims to know business should understand that. Maybe that's the way business should be done, not trying to see how to fit school training into the real world.

Firmware Update for MacBook Air

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._batteries.html

"Apple this past weekend released a firmware update for its MacBook Air line of ultra-thin notebooks that bundles support for a new series of replacement batteries."

This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.7 and modifies the micro-controller on the logic board. This, according to Apple, controls the power functions, thermal management, the sleep LED and the battery. Basically it makes the MacBook Air compatible with some new batteries that are coming out and will be distributed to the various repair centers. This is supposed to improve the battery life by optimally charging the cells. The update is 623KB in size and is available now.

Virtual Box 3.0 Drops

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.virtualbox.org/

"VirtualBox is a powerful x86 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). See "About VirtualBox" for an introduction. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), Solaris and OpenSolaris, and OpenBSD."

Oh wow. Way too many updates to list on this small post, but if you'd like to see them all, check 'em out here.

Virtual Box is shaping up to be a pretty decent alternatives to more expensive options like VMWare and Parallels. Anyone using Virtual Box instead?

May make one of these. Combined with one of my Gorillapods, it would be cool for filming interviews...

Ready for Adventure? NatGeo Has Some Apps For You

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 12:00 PM

http://adventure.nationalgeographic...vel-apps-text/3

"When it comes to adventure and travel, who could possibly know more than National Geographic Adventure magazine?"

National Geographic Adventure magazine does a lot of research for you, from local spots to international adventures so they know a thing or two about travel. They also do their fair share of research in the technology area and one of the recent articles was about the iPhone, and a variety of applications that help you in your travels. Some of them are ones you probably have heard about such as UrbanSpoon and HearPlanet, but they also pointed out some that aren't exactly well known like World Customs and Packing. The article is a fairly quick read and you may find some apps you can't travel without.

OS 3.1 Hits Beta: Nice Enhancements

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2009/0...-voice-control/

"Early word from TiPb commenters and the Twitter show some new iPhone 3.1 features found already: * Non-destructive video editing means trimming a clip no longer saves over the original video but gives you the option to “Save as copy…” * Voice Control now works over Bluetooth * iPhone vibrates when moving icons * Updated AT&T profile to 4.2 * Updated modem firmware to 5.08.01"

Interesting stuff!

I didn't expect Voice Control to work over Bluetooth, but I really REALLY want it to. So far, I'm quite happy with 3.0 and these updates, though minor, are kinda cool. Oh, and in my initial impressions post, I wrote about Voice Control not working well. Since then, it's improved and I can't quite explain why. I use it every day now.

Oh, and the non-destructive editing of videos would be great. Sometimes you want to post multiple clips from a long video and as the iPhone is configured now, you can't. I'm definitely looking forward to that.
