Expand Your Apple TV's Output Potential

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/165716/59-...display-system/

"AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring add a lot of value to the second and third generation Apple TVs. Paired with a recent iPad or the iPhone 4S, an Apple TV can instantly become a gaming solution and a theater for home movies - and will be amazing when combined with Mountain Lion when it ships this summer."

The limit is the HDMI port for output, but with this handy adapter from Kanex called the ATV Pro Adapter, that limit is now gone. The port is standard VGA port along with the 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack so now you can connect your Apple TV to a number of different older displays.

Griffin and Crayola Kid Friendly Headphones

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/re...phones-earbuds/

"First revealed in January at CES, Griffin and Crayola are now shipping their volume-limiting, kid-friendly MyPhones ($25) and MyPhones Earbuds ($15)."

Very cute and definitely kid friendly. Check out the article for pictures of the earbuds, very clever. Available now on the Griffin site.

AluPen Pro Stylus

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.insanely-great.com/news....t=Google+Reader

"The AluPen Pro is a combo ballpoint pen and rubber tipped stylus. The product comes with a replaceable tip for when the little rubber bubble wears out. Also has a small carrying case to protect the stylus and keep it from scratching anything in a bag."

Great option if you are looking for a stylus, since it also has a pen for those times when you need to actually write something down on paper. Best of both worlds. It's available now for around $36.00 USD [affiliate link].

Wired Keyboard for iPad? Yep

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/163903/kic...board-for-ipad/

"Who says iPad keyboards have to run on Bluetooth? Not MacAlly, that's for sure. The iKey30 is a good ol' USB keyboard which sports a 30-pin dock connector on the end of its cable, and comes with an almost ridiculous number of special function keys."

Not sure why you would want one, but now a wired keyboard is available from MacAlly for about 50 bucks. I think I'd much rather get a Bluetooth keyboard that I could also use when I dock my Macbook Air. In reading the Macworld review, they did make the point that if you are in an area where wireless connections are prohibited (such as during certain times on an airplane) it would come in handy. I don't think this outweighs the downside though, what are your thoughts?

Aero Pad Two Dock, Spendy But Oh So Nice

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5905002/an-ipad-...han-your-tablet

"Because they seemingly outnumber the stars in the sky, speaker docks for iOS devices are rarely worth a second glance."

I'd say this one deserves a second or third look, then it also deserves a purchase. Fantastic looking dock for your iPad, but at roughly $900.00 USD, I don't think I am worthy! You can find out more here.

Apple Results for Q2 One For Record Books

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 11:55 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...118m_ipads.html

"Apple on Tuesday announced its best-ever second fiscal quarter, as the company saw its earnings rise 94 percent to $11.6 billion, or $12.30 per diluted share, on quarterly revenue of $39.19 billion."

When you compare it to year ago numbers of $24.7 billion revenue and profits of $6.0 billion, it is impressive. And a record 2nd quarter results for Apple. Also impressive was the number of iPhones sold, namely 35.1 million of them which is growth of 88 percent from a year ago. iPad? Also up in numbers with 11.8 million sold, a paltry 151% increase over the same period last year. You can listen to the meeting via Apple, and if you are curious what the analysts thing, have a look here.

Get Your NFL Skin for Your iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.technologytell.com/apple...etell+Appletell

"When Apple announced they'd picked up Sprint as a carrier for the iPhone, my first though wasn't about data plans or download speeds or this G or that G, it was about the NFL. Finally, after a couple years as an iPhone owner, I'd be able to get a Seattle Seahawks skins for my iPhone 4."

The best thing about getting Sprint on board with the iPhone.

This Custom iPad Case is Amazing

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/161888/you...-folio-gallery/

"Holy crap. Check out this amazing custom iPad cover Redditor 44 Oz. had made for him by Australian-based leatherworking firm High On Glue, made with premium leather, suede lining, a kangaroo leather spine and embossed with the original Apple logo designed by Ron Wayne back in 1976, featuring Sir Isaac Newton resting under an Apple tree."

I'm with the author, as I don't normally like folio cases either but this one is certainly amazing. Makes me wish I had continued on with my leatherwork practice from 4H. If you want to order one, you can go check it out on this page and get your email in, it might be awhile though.

Need Help to Shoot Video and Photos One Handed? Try AirClip for iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/160956/air...th-two-fingers/

"You know what needs the AirClip? The iPad needs the AirClip. As it is, the finger-friendly grip is an accessory for the iPhone 4/S, and it actually looks pretty great. The AirClip is a clip-on grip that lets you shoot photos and videos one-handed."

I think I agree, this would be more useful on the iPad. But if you think it's a handy accessory, you can pick one up here for $20.00 USD.

http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/201...-open-saturday/

"Apple continues to expand its suburban coverage of Rome (Italy) with the grand opening of the Porta di Roma retail store this Saturday."

The last time they opened a store in Rome, Italy it was in 2007. This one will open up at 10:00 am Saturday.

Flip Steady for iPad, Does This Solve Your Case Problem?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2012/04/...steady-for-ipad

"Still haven't found the perfect iPad case for you? Consider the FlipSteady, now being considered at Kickstarter for the iPad 2 and new iPad."

I use a combo method on my iPad. For the front I use the smart cover from Apple and for the back I use hard shell cover from Scoshe. But I am always on the lookout for something better, and this might just be it. But I don't think I need to hurry over to the their Kickstarter page since they appear to be within $600.00 USD of their goal and they have 55 days left. Clever case indeed.

A Speaker Dock for Your iPad From Scoshe

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.maclife.com/article/revi...ker_dock_review

"Speaker docks are a tricky proposition. Build them big enough to boom, and they're hard to fit on your desk or kitchen counter. Build them small, and they usually lack the bass that helps us feel our favorite jams. Scoshe's BassDOCK manages to pack a punch, securely perching your iPad above a compact speaker that fits almost anywhere."

Simple design that works with all versions of iPad, and at $149.99 USD it won't break the bank. And, from the sounds of this review, it does the intended job very well.

Have Some Extra Hammers? Make Your Own iPad Stand

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5901992/literall...d-an-ipad-stand

"You might not be handy with a hammer or a screwdriver, but this clever iPad stand beingsold on Etsy shows that you don't actually need any construction skills to build a highly-functional stand. Just the tools themselves."

I do have several hammers, but I think I would rather buy this than build it..even if it sells for $95.00. Not that I'm going to buy it mind you, it's just that I'm not that handy when it comes to making my own stuff. But if you are interested, you can check out the Etsy site and see this and other items.

Armor For Your iPhone...Seriously

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5901966/heavily-...0-caliber-round

"It might add almost five pounds to the weight of your phone, but this armored iPhone case with one-inch of thick steel plating on the back is promised to stop a .50 caliber round."

Ugly, but it does the job of protecting your iPhone from a .50 caliber round. At $650.00 I can't see too many sales of this, cheaper to just get a new iPhone!

Sonoma Wire Works' Guitar Jack

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/159825/the...-pocket-review/

"There are no shortage of gadgets out there that allow you connect your guitar to your iPhone, putting the power of The App Store at your guitar's disposal."

I'm no musician, but I'm sure there are some out there reading this, so if you have been looking for that perfect gadget to connect your guitar to your iPhone, Cult of Mac says this is the one to get. It's not cheap at $150.00 USD, but from the article it sounds like a sturdy accessory. You can find out about the jack at the Sonoma site here.

Dropcam HD for Your Security Camera Needs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.cultofmac.com/160342/dro...ecurity-camera/

"Got a little corner of your property that you'd like to keep a closer eye on? Or are you just concerned that the babysitter is not shaking your kids hard enough when they start acting up? Then what you need is the Dropcam HD, a Wi-Fi video camera designed for remote monitoring."

This seems like a simple solution to security. $150.00 USD for the camera alone, and storage plans varying from $10.00 USD per month to $30.00 per month. It doesn't seem like too bad a deal, especially if you don't need to archive and just want streaming since then you are only out the cost of the camera. Find out more at Dropcam.

The Sound Sofa iPod Dock

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/04/11/soun...h-an-ipod-dock/

"If you want to use your iPod in the living room for ambient sound, but abhor the look of a black, plastic dock, then you should check out the Sound Sofa by CSL."

Interesting concept, and the couch doesn't look too bad. But at $1600.00 USD it's not cheap, and only available in England. You can find out more here.

Mophie's iPad Stand

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:19 AM

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/re...stand-for-ipad/

"Mophie's take on an iPad stand shouldn't come as a surprise."

Mophie brings their version of the iPad stand to the table, and I have to say I do like it. Lightweight aluminum, adjustable arm that rotates to show portrait or landscape views, charging station and it works on all three versions of the iPad. The only downside, and it's a small one, is that you have to remove the case from your iPad before using this. Oh wait, there is that small thing about price. At $150.00 it is not cheap, and for what you get, I think it's overpriced. What are your thoughts?

http://www.imore.com/2012/04/08/con...pod-touch-ipad/

"The Converge USB charging hub from Think Geek is a fun, futon-inspired stand for your iPhone, iPod tour or iPad."

Nice looking stand, and it's available now right here. Only $39.95 and you get a clean, compact design that will charge up to 4 devices via USB connectors, all hidden neatly behind the stand.

Let The Satechi R1 Hold Your Tablet

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.mactech.com/2012/04/03/s...iety-situations

"Tablets and larger mobile devices have changed our lives since the debut of the iPad, and we love holding those devices in our hands. We touch, create, and consume all while we have the device on our laps or hands."

But sometimes it is helpful to have a handy stand available, just like this one. At $49.95 USD it isn't too cheap, but it appears to be pretty functional, and it works for any number of devices that have a 7" to 10" screen, such as Galaxy Tabs, Kindle Fires, Asus Eee Pad and the Blackberry Playbook. You can find out more about this device at the Satechi site.
