The Four Horsemen of Tech

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 05:00 AM

http://money.cnn.com/2012/01/05/tec...rce=yahoo_quote

"Apple, Google, Amazon and IBM are the new 'four horsemen of tech,' 'high-profile public technology companies that are sure to return strong growth to investors year after year,' according to 'CNN Money.'"

Besides Apple, Amazon.com, IBM and Google made the merry band of tech giants called the Four Horsemen of Tech by CNNMoney in their article listed here. Apple had 84% of the votes though, making it the clear winner when readers were asked to name four tech giants. Seems obvious when you look at all Apple has done over the last few years yes? What are your thoughts?

CNN Live Streaming Via iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

"CNN is the first 24-hour news network to offer live streaming of both the flagship CNN channel and CNN Headline News to iPad and iPhone owners, and at CNN.com/video, via the TV Everywhere initiative."

If you don't know about the TV Everywhere initiative, you can read this article at Gigaom, but it boils down to having premium TV content available online as long as you can verify you have subscribed via third party sites, such as Dish Network or Comcast. I'm hoping eventually that you will be able to just subscribe directly to this premium content online instead of having to also have it set up on regular TV. I won't hold my breath, but I'm betting eventually it will get here, what are your thoughts?

CNN iPad App Released, Along With Bonus for iPhone Users

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:00 AM

http://gigaom.com/apple/cnn-comes-t...(GigaOM:+Apple)

"It's a little late getting here, but today CNN introduced its iPad app. The app is free, and features a unique user interface custom-designed for the iPad's larger screen. Simultaneous with the iPad app's release, CNN is making its existing iPhone app free, and introducing live breaking news video to the international version."

Nice that they are both free apps, and the UI really looks familiar ie Flipboard and Pulse. But it seems to work and they have updated the app to include social networking capabilities to allow sharing of your favorite news stories. The one complaint from the article seems to be about the ads but it doesn't seem to take too much away from the stories so I can live with it. Besides, I'm not out any money if I don't like it so I can just delete it, no harm no foul.

CNN in the iPhone App Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 08:00 AM

http://behindthescenes.blogs.cnn.co...cnn-iphone-app/

"As you may have heard by now, we launched the CNN App for the iPhone and iPod touch last night. We've had this app cooking for a while, so we are extremely excited to unveil it. Now available for download for a one-time fee of $1.99 on the App Store, the CNN App is designed to provide a visually-driven news experience for iPhone and iPod touch users who demand accessibility and convenience."

Favorable reviews on this app, which is $1.99 USD and available now in the iTunes store. But be warned you do get ads even though you paid for the app. According to the CNN press release, "We're charging a one-time fee of $1.99 for the CNN App on the iPhone and iPod touch, and the App also has ads in it. We did this for two reasons: 1. To deliver on a premium experience with unique features and functionality never before available from CNN on a mobile device; and 2. to ensure we were positioned to continue building new, improved mobile products to offer consumers."

If I pay for an application I don't want ads, even though the ones I've seen on the app are fairly unobtrusive. If you want to learn more about it, check out the CNN iPhone site.
