AT&T Changes Data Plans

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/164...l#lsrc.rss_main

"AT&T is at it again. In June of 2010, AT&T pulled the plug on its unlimited data plans and switched to tiered bandwidth plans. Now, AT&T is switching things up again-giving customers more megabytes per dollar, but charging more money in the process."

Call me paranoid, but whenever I see this stuff happening I instantly get a feeling like I'll be getting screwed over if I change, but that I'll miss something if I don't. So this article does a pretty good job of explaining just what the changes are and how you will benefit, or not benefit from switching. Worth the read if you are thinking of changing, but as is always the case with these situations, once you switch you cannot go back to your old plan. For me, makes sense to keep my 4GB with tethering plan, for you it might make sense to get something else. Just make sure you read and understand them before switching. What are your thoughts? Do any of the new plans make sense for you?

AT&T Apparently Has a Different Definition of Unlimited Than the Rest of Us

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 01:00 AM

http://allthingsd.com/20110729/atts...ting-throttled/

"So much for AT&T's grandfathered unlimited data plans.Confirming a report in 9to5Mac yesterday, the carrier said Friday that it will soon throttle its heaviest data users as part of an effort to alleviate congestion on its network."

Starting October 1st, if you hit the magic top 5% of data users, your speed will be throttled back until the next billing cycle, as a punishment for being a data hog, even if you are on the unlimited plan. If I was an unlimited user and they did this, I certainly wouldn't be happy about it. I guess you still can get all the data you want, but it would be at a slower speed. I would like to know what "extraordinary usage" is defined as by AT&T though, as that is the trigger point to get to the top 5%. It is certainly a worthless phrase if I can't quantify it, but they say they will give you a heads up before it happens so you can adjust usage during a grace period. What are your thoughts on this change by AT&T?

abroadband: Data Access for Travellers

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.abroadband.com/

My friend Rafe Blanford pointed out this service, which I hadn't heard of until now. It looks interesting - at current rates, it's about 86 cents USD/CAD per MB, and they support SIMs, microSIMs, and USB sticks. That's not "I'm going to order a TV season on iTunes and download it all" cheap, but if you were careful about not downloading email attachments and were sparing with your Internet access, you could make a $40 investment last a week or two. While you can check your online balance easily, it seems this isn't a true pre-pay solution...the metre keeps running without stopping, so be careful what you decide to download.

Note that this is for data only: this is for your laptop, tablet, or I-only-want-Internet-phone. If you want to use your phone abroad and do voice calls, text, etc. you'll need to get a SIM from a wireless carrier. Anyone know of a service similar to this but for full phone service?

Verizon Set to Cancel Unlimited Plans for Data

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:36 PM

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile...hone-5-details/

"Verizon CEO Fran Shammo told Reuters today that the carrier's unlimited data plans are no more. Verizon will introduce its new pricing strategy this summer, which will now be based on tiered packages - bad news for data hogs."

Couple interesting things about this announcement. One is that they talked about doing something along the lines of a family plan for data. The bigger thing is they gave details about the iPhone 5 saying "it would be a global phone (which Verizon claimed last month) - that it would operate on CDMA and GSM networks. He also mentioned the handset will launch on Verizon and AT&T at the same time, but couldn't give a definite answer about an LTE-capable iPhone 5. Shammo more or less said when it comes to 4G, the ball's in Apple's court." I'd wager he won't be invited to any Apple events anytime soon.

AT&T, Are You Nervous?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/26/...ering-them-unl/

"Were you riding one of AT&T's unlimited data deals until recently? If so, this whole new Verizon iPhone thing is about to work in your favor, as the Associated Press is reporting AT&T iPhone users are being offered a sort of unlimited data amnesty: if they had it before, but switched to a limited data plan since, they can now have it back."

I kept my unlimited plan when all this changed since the only reason for switching plans was to get tethering, but I won't pay the $20.00 USD for it so there. How about any of you that did switch, did you get an email from AT&T offering you the unlimited plan? If that came with tethering I might pay the $20.00 USD but not on a limited plan.

Vodafone Australia Announces Unlimited Data Plans for iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/05/26/voda...plan-for-ipads/

"There's good news for iPad customers in Australia. Vodafone announced today that they will offer an unlimited data plan for the iPad 3G. Here's the deal: For AUS$49.95 (approximately US$41 as of this writing) per month, users can enjoy unlimited data. Not bad!"

Touted as the "first unlimited data plan for the iPad" and with an interesting twist to it. They are offering 6GB data option for $100.00 AUS that expires in 90 days, and a 12GB option for $150.00 AUS that expires in 365 days. Not sure I've seen that before, but I could just be suffering from memory loss.

Rogers Canada Releases Their iPad Pricing for Data

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

http://9to5mac.com/ipad-canada-3G-r...rs-plan-pricing

"Rogers released their iPad pricing today. Unlike AT&T, they have a cap at 5GB and it costs C$35 compared with $30 US for the 'unlimited plan'."

Yesterday we noted that Orange Uk and Telstra in Australia announced their data plans for the iPad, and Rogers is also in the mix now. Initially Rogers had an option to add an iPad to an existing plan for $20.00, but apparently they have taken that out of the plan. But they do allow iPhone tethering which is a plus.
