Speaking of Financial Apps...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

"The iTunes App Store offers downloads of PageOnce Pro: Money & Bills for iPad / iPhone / iPod touch for free. That's a $13 drop and the best deal we've seen for this finance tool."

I really like PageOnce Pro, and have used it in all of it's various incarnations to check balances on all my financial accounts. Now that it is free, it's an even better deal and since we were talking about getting out of debt earlier today, isn't a free app that monitors your financial health a right step?

Guy Kawasaki Will Give You A Free Copy of The Macintosh Way....Again

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Talk" @ 11:00 PM

"The Apple sphere's favorite Apple evangelist, Guy Kawaskai, is offering his book The Macintosh Way for free. All you have to do is head over to the Facebook fan page of his upcoming book, Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds and Actions, "Like" it, and then download the PDF."

Back in August 2010 he was doing the same thing, but now he is switching to Facebook and tying it to his new book to get the word out. So if you missed out on your free copy in August, you have another shot. And while you are at it you can find out about his new book.

Gorillaz Releases New Album, Written on the iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:00 AM

"Following through with their Yuletide threat, Gorillaz has released their new album, The Fall, over on their official website... an album notable for being both written and recorded almost entirely on the iPad, using downloaded App Store apps."

The gimmick, of course, is that they used an iPad to create this, but the other noteworthy item about the album is you can stream it or download it for free from their website. They used numerous apps from the iTunes app store to create this album, such as Xenon, Cleartune and the free Mugician, and while this isn't my taste in music, I have to give them kudos for experimentation.

Free One Day Shipping From

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 11:00 AM

"Well this is a nice early stocking stuffer! Now through 11:59pm (PST) on December 22nd, Amazon's giving you free one-day shipping on certain electronics, software, and video games. After you add a qualifying item to your cart, select One-Day Shipping at checkout and they'll apply the discount."

All kinds of deals are popping up as we approach Christmas, and one-day shipping for free is a pretty good one if you are one of those that likes to live on the edge and shop last minute. has set up a page to show you all the items that qualify for this deal here to make it easy for you.

Free Mobile Hotspot With Best Buy iPad Purchase

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:08 AM

"Best Buy is offering a sweet bundle on the WiFi-based iPad which includes your choice of a free companion AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint mobile hotspot."

Looks like you have your choice from Verizon, Sprint and AT&T, and of course you have to sign up for a monthly data plan and commit for two years. But if you were planning on picking up a Wi-Fi only iPad for someone, this is a pretty good bonus and gives you some flexibility versus the 3G version since you can use these hotspots for other devices. And since you no longer have to worry about the restocking fees Best Buy is infamous for, there is even less risk!

Pulse for iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad, Free for All

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

"Alphonso Labs has announced that its news reader, Pulse News Mini, is now available for free across all platforms. The RSS reader displays items within panning story bars, allowing users to view a colorful mosaic rather than simple text lists. The app also provides options for keyboard search, Google Reader import, and sharing via Facebook, Twitter or e-mail."

I'm still trying to find the perfect news reader for my iPad, as well as my iPhone, and haven't settled on anything specifically. Since this one is free I may have to give it a try. It is available for the iPhone/iPod Touch, and the Pulse News Reader is available for free for the iPad. Typically I just go to Google when on my laptop (but it doesn't work very well on my iPad), but switch around to several on the iPad. What do you use for your RSS feeds?

"Use the Bento Event Planner to track contacts, vendors, tasks, expenses, location details, important files, emails and more - and link them to any event. It's perfect for planning meetings, conferences, tradeshows, weddings, parties and fundraisers."

The templates are free, but require Bento 3, which sells for $49.00 USD. Of course, you can always try it out for free for 30 days to see if you like it. It does integrate nicely with iOS so you can keep all of your changes sync'd together.

"That's right, kiddies. Every year it's the most magical time of the year when all the good little boys and girls who have to travel during the holidays are rewarded with wide open WiFi, free of charge, from those jolly elves in Mountain View."

Free Wi-Fi from Google Chrome, from November 20th through January 2nd, 2011, but not only with Virgin America. Free Content Via Wi-Fi From Starbucks Starts Today

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 01:00 AM

"Starbucks' free wireless service is a boon to the mobile employed and unemployed, or anyone just looking to kill some time. But starting tomorrow, every store in the nation will also offer sippers a nice buffet of free online content."

The content is called "Starbucks Digital Network" and it was designed by Yahoo. You can access it for free at any Starbucks, and it contains various content including video clips, eBook excerpts and song of the week picks. The best part though, is that you get total access (while you are in the Starbucks of course) of normally paid content such as that offered by Wall Street Journal. If you frequent Starbucks, it's worth checking out, you don't have anything to lose except for some time.

FedEx and Kinko's For Your Free Wi-Fi Needs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 03:00 AM

"FedEx announced on Wednesday that it is now offering free Wi-Fi access at around 1,000 of its FedEx Office Print & Ship Center locations across the US. The connection is powered by AT&T, and will arrive at its other stores by the end of October. This should bring the total closer to 1,600 locations."

Another option for you folks, in case you have to have access while making copies, or Starbucks has kicked you out of their place.

"Halloween is upon us once again, affording men the opportunity to dress up like police officers, vampires and pirates, and affording the women the opportunity to dress up like sexy police officers, sexy vampires and sexy pirates. It also affords app developers the chance to release their new Halloween apps, or at least modify them with a Halloween theme."

Get Your Free Copy of The Macintosh Way

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Classic Apple" @ 08:00 AM

"For those of us who were followers of Apple back in the 80s and 90s, there was no single person who defined the enthusiasm and overall attitude of the company more than Guy Kawasaki. Guy was part of the team responsible for the original marketing of the Mac, and is credited with the use of evangelism in tech marketing to create a passionate following for a product."

I still have my copy, autographed by Guy Kawasaki when he was doing the book tour for the release of this book, and now you can get a copy without having to stand in line. Just make sure you are following him on Twitter, then go to the verification site to download the free eBook of The Macintosh Way.

Apple Starts Bumper Shipping, What About the Cases?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:30 PM

"Rejoice, iPhone 4 owners, because the bandaid to solve your antenna problems is coming. We got confirmation that the first free Apple bumpers are now shipping."

I just got my confirmation email about my bumper shipping as well. So this is well ahead of the timetable they give you via the app, which is 3 to 5 weeks. Anybody out there order something other than bumpers and get an email also?

Free iPhone 4 Bumper Program Now Online

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:06 AM

"Customers who had already bought iPhone Bumpers before Apple offered free cases to all iPhone 4 users have started to receive refunds from the company."

And now the free case program has started via an app from iTunes. The process, outlined on the Apple site [link] is pretty simple. Download the free app [link], sign in to your iTunes account and select your free case. Seems pretty simple. Not so sure yet how it will work on accounts with multiple iPhones such as ours but I guess I'll soon find out!

UPDATE: Macworld has an article [link] telling you everything you need to know about the program in case you have questions.

How About a Free Case From Apple?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 12:16 PM

"After days of being pilloried for the iPhone 4's antenna problems, Apple CEO Steve Jobs took to the stage in Cupertino, California to respond."

And he responded with an offer most won't refuse: a free case or bumper. Starting at the end of next week you will be able to go online and submit your request at Apple for a bumper or another approved case, and if you already purchased a bumper you can apply for a refund.

Want a Level for Your iPhone? Here is a Free One

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:12 PM

"The iTunes App Store offers downloads of iHandy Level for iPhone / iPod touch for free."

Free is a very good price, and it just so happens that iHandy's Level [iTunes link] fits that bill. The app is one of 5 in the iHandy Carpenter app [affiliate link], and no word on how long this will last. Looking at the iHandySoft website [link], I can see how they get their name as the apps do look like they would come in "handy."

Time to Register for Macworld 2011

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Articles & Resources" @ 10:00 AM

"Today, Macworld announced via e-mail that free registration for the 2011 conference is now open."

And if you register [link] by July 26th 2010 (the date in the article is wrong, it should read July not June), your registration is free.
