Win a Souped Up Macbook Pro

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 04:00 AM

"This is just totally sick. The guys over at Germany's Hardwrk have taken 16GB of DDR3 RAM and a 1TB Samsung 830 SATA III SSD bundled up in an SSD-RAID-0, slapped it into a 13-inch MacBook Pr running an Intel Core i7-2640M 2.8GHz chip."

This is sick, and in a good way. Leave a comment here to enter yourself in the contest to win this bad boy.

A Speaker Dock for Your iPad From Scoshe

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"Speaker docks are a tricky proposition. Build them big enough to boom, and they're hard to fit on your desk or kitchen counter. Build them small, and they usually lack the bass that helps us feel our favorite jams. Scoshe's BassDOCK manages to pack a punch, securely perching your iPad above a compact speaker that fits almost anywhere."

Simple design that works with all versions of iPad, and at $149.99 USD it won't break the bank. And, from the sounds of this review, it does the intended job very well.

Improve Your iPad Battery Life With These Simple Steps

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 AM

"One question that seems to come up regularly regarding the iPad 3: how can I get more out of the battery?"

I have this question myself, as it seems to run down a lot quicker than my 1st generation iPad did. However, I tend to use it more than I did the older one so that could be the major issue! Regardless, this is a great article that runs down what you can do to get yourself some extra battery life out of your iPad. Some seem to be no brainers, such as turning down the brightness and turning off the 4G when you aren't using it, but it's the simple things that get past you when you least expect it right? For me I totally forgot about location services on the iPad and turning it off helped a great deal. No biggie since I don't use it all that often.

Happy 35th Birthday Apple II

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Classic Apple" @ 03:40 PM

"Thirty-five years ago, on April 16 and 17, 1977, more than twelve thousand proto-geeks flooded into San Francisco's Civic Auditorium."

They were all excited about this new thing called the personal computer! The Apple II to be exact. Interesting story about the launch of the Apple II if you are into history, well worth the read.

iBooks Publishers Get VIP Discounts at Apple Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 12:26 PM

"Some sharp eyes have once again discovered something new and cool in Apple-land."

Sounds like it is similar to the educational discounts, nice that they are expanding this to other areas.

I Do Not Want Any Device This Bad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 AM

"How badly do you want an iPhone and iPad? A Chinese teen sold his kidney to set his hands on the devices...and authorities have charged five people."

Incredible. And stupid.

WiFi Issues With Your New iPad?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:34 PM

""If you're having trouble connecting your new iPad to your local WiFi connection, you're not alone. 9to5 Mac got its hands on an internal AppleCare document that suggests Apple is looking into connectivity problems with the WiFi version of the new iPad."

Some of the problems reported are connectivity problems, slow WiFi speeds and the inability to see WiFi networks. They don't have a fix as of yet, but if you are experience these problems, head to your nearest Apple store or contact them online for a replacement since, as part of their investigative process, Apple is instructing their employees to "capture" any iPads returned for the WiFi problems and replace them with a new iPad. Apparently it's not just WiFi problems either, as some owners are also experiencing 3G problems as this article from Apple Insider notes. If you are curious about the capture process, this article from ZDNet outlines why they do it.

About time. So once unlocked, you can use your iPhone on any compatible network, anywhere in the world, as long as you have the right SIM card and it's on GSM.

Apple TV 3 (2012) Reviewed: Worth the Upgrade?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 10:07 AM

"The iPad (3) took front row during the recent launch extravaganza, however Apple also refreshed their Apple TV with a new model sporting a single core A5 SoC and some other noteworthy tweaks. We've spent some time with the new model since its launch, and have found a few interesting new things lurking inside. In addition to decoding 1080p iTunes content as well as YouTube and Netflix streams, the new Apple TV also includes a second WiFi antenna with better gain, which translates to improved reception and network throughput."

It's amusing - and a little odd - that in 2012 a "new" product feature is supporting 1080p video, but here we are. Up until recently, unless I'm mistaken, all iTunes video content topped out at 720p. Now that iTunes supports 1080p downloads, it makes sense that Apple would wait to release this product. I wonder of Apple TV is still a "hobby" product for Apple? This review has a cool teardown of the product, and in typical Anandtech fashion, even their "short" reviews are incredibly detailed.

The most interesting part of this review for me wasn't about the Apple TV: the reviewer did some detailed examination of the 1080p and 720p video files from iTunes. By switching to a different encoding parameters, Apple went from 720p to 1080p, but only increased the file size by 25% because they only went up by 1mbps in terms of bit rate to 5mbps. Does 5mbps sound low for 1080p content? Yeah, exactly. The movies I've watched via my iPad at 1080p look good, but not Blu-ray good. There's always a balance between quality and file size, and I'm sure Apple tested this more than a bit, but the bit rate geek in me would love to see higher quality so when I buy a movie or TV show I don't feel like I'm losing out vs. Blu-ray...

Consumer Reports Likes the iPad?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:30 AM

"Consumer Reports, clearly moving on from whoring pageviews over heatgate, just planted the new iPad at the top of its recommended tablet chart."

I guess they are trying to get some goodwill back after jumping on the bandwagon with the supposed heat issue? Who knows, but you can read their review here.

People Appear Satisfied With the New iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:52 AM

"I love my new iPad and it appears that I am not alone."

I'm in the same group, of course I upgraded from 1st generation iPad so what's not to love right? The survey by Changewave that consisted of 200 new iPad owners shows 98% of them are satisfied with the device. Best feature? The retina display.

Class Action Suit Settlement for iPhone 4 Antenna "Problems"

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

"In case you didn't know, Apple's iPhone 4 had some unfortunate issues with its antenna that started the "Antennagate" scandal, which ultimately led to a class action lawsuit against the company."

If you didn't partake of the original offer of a free iPhone 4 case, you can go here and submit a request for your part of the settlement. Make sure you are eligible for it though, and do to that you can go here. You have until August 28th, 2012 to submit your claim.

"Apple retailer MacMall will be hosting a grand opening event at its new Chicago store on Saturday, March 31, at 8:30AM. The store opening marks the MacMall's first retail push in Chicago, and is the company's fourth physical store."

Tips to Improve Your iOS Device Battery Life

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

"Good battery life is essential for a mobile device to succeed in the post-PC era, and Apple's iOS devices continue to pack upgraded internals and improved battery technology into every product iteration."

But even with all of this improvement, advances in what you can do with your iOS device do cause the drain game to happen. So if you are tired of seeing that red lined battery image as pictured above, then this article has some good tips for you. I knew about brightness levels and the effect on battery life, but there were several other tips I was unaware of, such as in location services. So check it out and learn how to master your battery!

It's only about 2 minutes long, and well worth the time it takes to watch. Very cool.

Leadership Lessons From Steve Jobs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 06:00 AM

"Writing for the April edition of the Harvard Business Review, biographer Walter Isaacson has penned a piece looking at the "real leadership lessons" of Steve Jobs. Mr. Isaacson, the author of Steve Jobs, used the 6,824 word essay to try and boil down that biography to the most essential and salient aspects of Steve Jobs as a leader for those who may have missed the message in the full book."

I only have these two words to say about this article: read it.

New iPad Works Great for Mobile Hotspot

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:30 PM

"Anandtech took a closer look at the new iPad's 42.5 Wh battery and discovered the battery is fantastic for those using the device as a mobile hotspot."

Anandtech was able to get 25.3 hours on a single charge when using their WiFi+4G iPad as a mobile hotspot on Verizon. Pretty impressive, but not unexpected I guess since this is in line with what the iPad 2 was getting when tested previously.

Apple Responds to Battery Problem: "There is no Problem."

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:45 PM

"Apple is responding to concerns that the new iPad has battery issues. Today, the company's Vice President of iPad marketing, Michael Tchao, went on record saying consumers have nothing to worry about. In fact, according to Tchao there is no issue at all."

You can read the interview here, but basically it is working as designed. What that means is that you can keep your iOS device plugged in as long as you like, due to the way the circuitry is designed, without fear of it being damaged. Tchao says it has always been a feature in iOS. What are your thoughts?
