iCards Updated With New Designs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:19 AM

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ne...r-mothers-day-/

"Apple has updated its Cards iOS app with several new card designs."

I love this free app. It makes it so easy to send a card without having to go to the store and buy one, and they are customized with a photo. Now they have added Mother's Day and Get Well card designs to go along with the other categories.

Sonoma Wire Works' Guitar Jack

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/159825/the...-pocket-review/

"There are no shortage of gadgets out there that allow you connect your guitar to your iPhone, putting the power of The App Store at your guitar's disposal."

I'm no musician, but I'm sure there are some out there reading this, so if you have been looking for that perfect gadget to connect your guitar to your iPhone, Cult of Mac says this is the one to get. It's not cheap at $150.00 USD, but from the article it sounds like a sturdy accessory. You can find out about the jack at the Sonoma site here.

iPad Handwriting Apps Review

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:04 PM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2012/04/...g-apps-for-ipad

"Apps that allow users to handwrite on their iPads using a finger or stylus have become increasingly popular, which suggests that the iOS keyboard is not always the best tool for a job, and that typing may not have fully eroded the need for decent handwriting."

I settled on Notability for my needs, since I work mostly with PDFs and I like how it organizes files. What are your thoughts on this lengthy list of apps? Which one or ones do you use?

Create and Update Your Notes Via Siri

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.imore.com/2012/04/08/sir...-updates-notes/

"Apple's virtual personal assistant, Siri, can do all sorts of wonderful things, including creating and updating Notes right on your iPhone."

It's as simple as telling Siri to "create a new note" or "make a new note." If you add the name of the note at the end of the request, such as "create a new note grocery list" it will then title the note. I haven't tried this out, but supposedly updating the note isn't as easy as creating it. I'm guessing you just say "add grapes to grocery note" or something like that. What are your thoughts, ever tried creating notes or reminders via Siri? If so, any helpful hints?

Facebook Buys Instagram

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:27 AM

http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2012/04...billion/?emc=na

"Facebook is not waiting for its initial public offering to make its first big purchase."

And that first big purchase is Instagram, for $1 billion in cash and stock according to a Facebook post by Zuckerberg. He says he is going to keep it separate from Facebook. Some, like Ben Brooks, aren't too sure about it and are using the "delete my account" option to get out while they can. Gizmodo has a post up now too on how to export all of your photos "before Facebook ruins everything." Me? I don't use it too often, but I'm more of the wait and see approach. What are your thoughts?

Major League Baseball is Here, Are You Ready?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.imore.com/2012/04/05/iphone-ballgame/

"The bases are loaded, the pitchers are on the mounds, and Major League Baseball season has begun! So now it's time to take me - and my iPhone - out to the ballgame!"

I think it's pretty hard to beat the MLB At Bat Universal App for following MLB on your portable device, but the article does offer a couple alternatives in case you are in fantasy leagues. New this year though, also from MLB, is an app for your iPhone called At The Ballpark. This one is cool as it helps you navigate the ballpark you happen to be at, as well as several check in options and rewards.

Save Money on Your Apps

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/158096/be-...-apps-for-less/

"There are now over 500,000 iPhone apps and 170,000 iPad apps available on Apple's App Store and that number will surely continue to increase as new app developers enter the foray."

And it certainly helps the wallet when you can save on those apps doesn't it? I mainly watch for deals on the eCards via Best Buy and Walmart for iTunes Gift Cards. But that isn't the only way to save, and this article points out a few more tips that you might find handy.

PDF Expert 4.0, Now Compatible With Retina Display

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/158441/pdf...media-and-more/

"Readdle has released a major update to PDF Expert, its flagship PDF Expert app for the iPad, introducing high-resolution Retina support for the latest device, and a number of handy new features like document thumbnails and support for embedded media."

If you work with PDFs at all, you need this program. I've had this since version 1 and find it indispensable. Now you can listen to audio or watch video that is embedded in PDFs. It's pricey at $9.99 USD, but worth every penny in my opinion.

Tax Apps to Help You Beat the Deadline

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/04/03/five...ile-your-taxes/

"With only a few weeks before taxes are due -- the federal deadline is on April 17, and many states have followed suit -- plenty of Americans are scrambling to file before the clock ticks away."

There are a few that I use that aren't on this list. One is Taxcaster from TurboTax, a universal app to help you estimate how much your tax (or refund for that matter) will be. Another is MyTaxRefund, an app to track your refund. Hopefully you won't need the third one from TurboTax, it's called Easy Extension. I think the name lets you know what that app is all about.

HTML5 and Scout for Your iOS Navigation Needs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 07:00 AM

http://macdailynews.com/2012/03/27/...+(MacDailyNews)

"'HTML5 might be the future of web apps, but the new mobile standard hasn't gotten much play in the car,' Damon Lavrinc reports for Wired. 'TeleNav's Scout division aims to change that with a new navigation system that offers voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions through your mobile browser. And even better, it's free.'"

The app is called Scout, and is available now as free download from iTunes. Give it a try, you might be pleasantly surprised like I was.

Alltop on the iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/03/27/allt...hats-happening/

"If you're familiar with Alltop, you'll know that the site touts itself as being able to answer the question 'What's Happening?' rather than answering questions like 'How many people use Macs?'"

I love Alltop so I'm pretty glad they now have an app for it. Sounds like it works pretty well per this article, and the ads at the bottom aren't too intrusive. And it's free.

iPhoto or Photoshop Touch?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:09 PM

http://www.macworld.com/article/116...l#lsrc.rss_main

"The Retina display on the new iPad is one of the tablet's defining features, and it makes the device ideally suited for multimedia work, including image editing. Apple's new iPhoto app and Adobe's Photoshop Touch are taking advantage of that opportunity by bringing powerful photo editing and sharing tools to the iPad."

I haven't done much with either program, although both are on my iPad. I'm not really sure which is the best for my needs, and I'm still weighing both options but at least with this article it makes it clearer. What are your thoughts on these two programs for iPad?

iMovie for iOS, a Review

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.imore.com/2012/03/16/imo...ne-ipad-review/

"iMovie is an excellent video editing application that is easy and fun to use, but are the new trailers really enough to take the spot as the best video editing app for the iPhone and iPad?"

At $4.99 USD [affiliate link], it's not a bad deal for a feature rich application like this, and the review backs that up. Detailed and broken down into sections, the review is a good one that does list a few cons with iMovie for iOS, such as not being able to sync iMovie with another iOS device or your Mac. But if you are on the go, it seems to be a pretty good option.

Restore Data on Your New iPad the Right Way

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/153932/res...-the-right-way/

"Last week, we showed you how to prepare your old iPad for today's upgrade to the new one. Now you have your new device, you'll want to ensure that all of your data from your old one gets transferred over during the setup process. Here's how to do it - the right way."

Apple certainly makes this easy, so wether you use the plug in version of backup or iCloud back up, you will get a prompt when setting it up. Select "Restore From iTunes Backup" and let the magic begin. Make sure, however, that you choose the most recent backup if you are restoring via iTunes.

Trading in or Selling Your Current iPad/iPad 2? Make Sure its Wiped Clean!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/...t+Hardware+2.0)

"There are two ways to erase an iPad. There's the right way and the wrong way."

As you can see from the screen shot above, the right way is pretty straightforward. Go to Settings, then General, and click on the "Erase All Content and Settings" button. Then turn it back on and make sure that it has been reset. Simple. The wrong way is to do it through iTunes, since you don't want to corrupt or change your current content file. Otherwise you won't be able to put your stuff onto your new iPad 3, or HD, or whatever they will be calling it.

Top Free and Paid Apps

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/150436/app...ps-of-all-time/

"As it did when the App Store reached 10 billion downloads last year, Apple has revealed the all-time top paid and free apps for the iPhone and iPad."

So, in keeping with tradition, after Apple hit 25 billion downloads they did the same. No big shockers as to the number one iPhone free (Facebook) and paid (Angry Birds) apps. Here is the rest of the list if you are interested.

Turn Your Instagram Collection Into a Poster

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

http://mashable.com/2012/02/12/inst...able+(Mashable)

"Enjoy uploading pictures to the Internet via Instagram? Now you can turn your collection into a poster."

Sounds pretty easy too, since all you have to do is select the ones you want and the online retailer Firebox will build you a poster from the selections. The width is set at 24 inches, but you can go as long as 5 feet. Another option listed is Printstagr.am, but with them you can also get physical photos printed along with stickers and minibooks.

How Cost Effective is the iPad Versus the Textbook?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 AM

http://dsc.discovery.com/gear-gadge...nfographic.html

"Looks like Apple is on the verge of capturing yet another lucrative market, and changing education as we know it... Or are they?"

I've always thought that using the iPad in place of a textbook would be awesome if I were back in school, and I still do, however the cost comparison they used does make me pause. Granted, they are making a few assumptions such as cost of the "book" on the iPad versus what a textbook will cost, as well as the true cost the school will pay for the iPad. I think the biggest mistake is that the market created will be high school. I'm sure some will adopt this, but I think the more appropriate place is for the college student. That is where the true value of using the iPad will be realized. All the textbooks will be on it, you can write your papers on it, and use it for entertainment in your down time. It is the perfect vehicle for the college student and I hope that is where they focus, at least initially. What are your thoughts?
