Real World Test of the iPad Battery, As Well As a Comparison

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/03/19/new-...good-as-ipad-2/

"CNET reporter Eric Franklin spent his weekend torture-testing the battery of the new iPad, the iPad 2 and the Android-powered Asus Transformer Prime. He took each device, charged it fully and then drained its juice by continually playing a move. All these tests were conducted in airplane mode so WiFi, 4G or LTE connectivity would not affect these results."

What he found was that the iPad 2 lasted 14.2 hours, the new iPad lasted 12.8 hours and the Asus lasted 9.6 hours. The Asus did last 15.3 hours when tied to an external keyboard dock that had it's own battery, but why wouldn't it with extra juice right? You can read his report here.

I Wish I Had Stopped At This Goodwill!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"Sometimes you wake up, and life's just out to kick you in the junk as hard as it can. Other days, you wake up and the whole world is smiling on you."

And it certainly smiled on this guy, picking up an iPad 2 for $65.00 USD at his local Goodwill Store. Wow.

Another Side to the Kindle Fire vs. iPad 2 Comparison Table

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 PM

http://www.marco.org/2011/12/19/ama...KqJb+(The+Loop)

"Amazon published this Kindle Fire vs. iPad 2 page shortly after its announcement on September 28, 2011. I thought it was just a temporary promo, but it turns out that Amazon is still pushing it heavily."

The promo page at Amazon is basically to compare the two devices, to give people some more power over their purchasing decision. However in his article, Marco Arment gives another side to this comparison and it's well worth the read.

Weekend Sale on iPad 2 Display Dock from PCGadgets

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:17 AM

http://newpcgadgets.com/products/ip...l/index-1.html#

"Take advantage of our pre-holiday 65% off sale of our very popular iPad 2 Display Dock."

65% off is a pretty good deal, if you want to display your iPad in something similar to what the Apple retail stores use. They have dropped the price down to $24.95 from $69.95 USD, this weekend only.

Secure Your iPad 2 From This Trick!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5852036/how-to-b...t-a-smart-cover

"In a pretty sizable and scary (and weird!) security bug, Apple's Smart Cover can be used to unlock any iPad 2, even if there's a passcode on it. Here's how it works. And here's how to fix it."

The first thing that always goes through my mind when stuff like this pops up is "what in the world made them think to try this?" Basically the fix is to turn off the Smart Cover unlocking in the General Settings menu until Apple can issue a fix. Or just hang on to your iPad 2 and not worry about it.

"Everyone remembers the iDon't ads Verizon Wireless aired for its DROID handsets. In a refreshing change, the carrier has released an iPad 2 ad that is airing on national TV."

And Apple has a new iPad 2 ad as well...

Vonage's Time to Call App: 15 Free Minutes, International Calling and a Free iPad 2!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:40 AM

Time to Call is a free app from Vonage, that lets you make phone calls (including international calls) from your iPhone or iPad 2 at very affordable rates. And as a bonus, they are giving you 15 minutes of calling time when you download the app using this link. The cool thing about this app is that it uses your iTunes account to pay for the minutes, so you don't have to mess around with calling cards or getting an operator involved. All you do is make the call and it will subtract the charges direct from your iTunes account. The rates are pretty reasonable too as outlined in the details below:

  • Pay per call and talk up to 15 minutes to 100 countries for $1.99 or less (not including taxes)
  • For an additional 90+ countries, talk up to 15 minutes for $2.99 to $9.99 (not including taxes)
  • Works on WiFi internationally, 3G in the US and Canada
  • FREE download - No need to be a Vonage home customer
  • LIMITED TIME OFFER: Download now and call up to 15 minutes for FREE.

If you go to the Vonage site, you can easily find out how much your 15 minutes of calling time will be as it is based on the country you are calling. Simply select the country from the drop down list and it gives you the cost in US Dollars. Pretty simple. For example, calling Argentina will set you back $1.99 USD for 15 minutes of calling time, of course that is not including the 15 free minutes you get just for downloading the app. And make sure to read on to find out how to win an iPad 2 from Vonage as part of their promotion for the new app.

Vaja's Libretto Limited Edition iPad 2 Case: Gorgeous!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

This is my review of the Vaja Libretto Limited Edition leather cases for the iPad 2. The leather colour/style is "Mamut", and yes, it's as gorgeous as it looks. Ringing in at $190 USD, this is a premium-brand, luxury case. It's designed for someone who cares as much about how good the case looks as what it actually does. Thankfully, the Vaja case delivers good functionality along with the distinctive look. It lacks a second angle, but is otherwise similar to many other cases out there - it's basically the leather materials and hand-made approach that sets Vaja cases apart from the mass-manufactured cases you're probably used to.

The biggest thing to be aware of is that a case made of leather is going to wear and get "character" over time - nicks, scratches, tears, etc. It will look worn in a matter of months, so you don't buy a case like this expecting it to have the "looks the same as it always does" durability that a synthetic case does. As long as you're aware of that, I have no hesitation recommending this case - it's beautiful, unique-looking, and has the basic functionality you want in an iPad 2 case.

Marware CEO Hybrid iPad 2 Case Reviewed: It's a Keeper

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Laptop Thoughts Accessories" @ 07:30 AM

This is my review of the Marware CEO Hybrid case for the iPad 2; it's a very versatile case that looks good, offers very comprehensive protection for the iPad 2, and is surprisingly affordable at $49.99 MSRP. The case covers 97% of the iPad, and the corners offer 5x more protection. I've been using this case for over a month now with my iPad 2; it's very damage resistant and still looks nearly brand new. I particularly like how it offers a second angle for typing/viewing - most cases do not. Read more...

Snazzy Looking Aluminum Case for Your iPad 2

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:00 PM

http://9to5mac.com/2011/07/06/alumi...-air-lookalike/

"We've been hearing scary stories about the post-PC era ever since Steve Jobs and Apple first talked about this new age of computing at the iPad 2 unveiling. Mobile devices akin to iPad will obsolete our desktop computers (which will be like trucks), we are being told."

Now this, versus this, is something that I would spend money on. For $49.95 over at MIC, you can pick up this case that appears to make your iPad 2 into a notebook of sorts. I don't think notebooks per se will ever be obsolete, but this is one of the nicest couplings of keyboard and iPad that I have seen and I would definitely consider using this. What are your thoughts? Are notebooks going away? Should you get ahead of the crowd and get one of these now?

Secure Your iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/160...d_security.html

"The iPad is one of the safest computing devices you can use. Its combination of hardware and software security translate to a device that's probably more secure than your PC or Mac-especially if you take the right steps to secure it."

And securing it mainly means keeping it out of someone else's hands! But if by chance you do lose your grip on it, you can secure the data that is there very simply by putting a passcode on it. The article goes into some other in-depth options also, but first and foremost, set up a passcode.

Pretend Your Desk is an Apple Retail Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/06/22/ipad...le-store-charm/

"This is cute. The iPad 2 display dock is a new product by a company called New PC Gadgets that's basically a dock for your iPad 2 that looks just like the ones holding the devices in Apple Stores."

This is a slick display, perfect for your desktop. And it does look like something you would see in an Apple retail store, but it comes at a price. For $74.95 USD you too can own one of these, available now from New PC Gadgets. Seems pretty steep to me, but to each his own.

My Favourite iPad Bag: the iPad Travel Express by Waterfield Designs

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Laptop Thoughts Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

This is a review video of the iPad Travel Express, made by Waterfield Designs in the USA. This is a well-designed, sturdy bag that's perfect for carrying your iPad (with or without the Smart Cover), the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, the iPad sync cable and AC adaptor, along with a few other small items (wallet, phone, MP3 player, etc.). It's not a low-cost bag - you're definitely paying for the quality of the materials and the fact that it's made in the USA - but it's one of the best bags of its type that I've used and I highly recommend it. The DecalGirl skin shown in the video can be purchased here. [Affiliate]

Apple Recalls Some Verizon iPad 2s Due to Duplicate Serial Numbers

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...cate_meids.html

"Apple has confirmed that an "extremely small number" of iPad 2 units for Verizon have been recalled because they were accidentally shipped with identical electronic serial numbers."

Well that is embarassing isn't it? Apple was able to catch "most" of the devices with the problem but the several passed through, unknown how many exactly. It could be a pretty high number though, as in this story at All Things D they reported that one store alone sent back 100 of the units. Ouch.

Airplay and Apple TV

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://gigaom.com/apple/you-wanted-...play-mirroring/

"Since the second-generation Apple TV was released back in September of last year, people have wondered if and when apps would arrive on the device. After all, it runs on iOS software, so the underpinnings of app support are already present. But Apple hasn't opened up the Apple TV to third-party developers; or at least it hadn't before it unveiled iOS 5 on Monday."

Well you can't exactly get support for apps to run natively on the Apple TV, but the author found with AirPlay Mirroring that it was almost as good. You could do this with the Digital AV Adapter with iPad original and 2nd version, but with the wireless option it makes it an even better option. All you have to do is select your Apple TV as your output source in the multitasking menu bar and it works as designed. Anything you do on your iPad 2 from this point on will be reflected on your display connected to the Apple TV. Pretty slick.

Noreve's iPad 2 Leather Sleeve Reviewed

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Laptop Thoughts Accessories" @ 08:00 AM

The Noreve iPad 2 Leather Sleeve is a simple product that does the job of protecting your iPad 2 in style - it retails for 79.99 Euro, which is about $118 USD depending on the currency rate. It' not a cheap case - it's a high-end, almost fashion-like product for a certain type of buyer. The leather is luxurious and the case screams quality. Check out the video for the full review.
