The Twelve South BookBook iPad Case: Clever and Cool

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Laptop Thoughts Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

This is my review of the Twelve South BookBook, a very creative and clever carrying case for the iPad and iPad 2. Ever wanted to carry your iPad in stealth mode, hiding the fact that you have an expensive tablet computer on you? Then this is the case for you. Available in two colours - Classic Black or Vibrant Red - this case is a leather-bound, hand-distressed, very novel way to protect and carry your iPad or iPad 2. The BookBook can be purchased via the Laptop Thoughts Amazon store for $69.99 USD.

Interested in the skin on the iPad 2? You can get it from DecalGirl [Affiliate].

Waterfield Design's iPad 2 Suede Jacket Reviewed

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Laptop Thoughts Accessories" @ 09:00 AM

To watch in full screen 1080p, please click on the video title and go over to YouTube.

This is my review of the Waterfield Design iPad 2 Suede Jacket. It's a simple product that works exceptionally well - if you're looking for a simple sleeve for your iPad 2, this is an affordable, effective product. The Ultrasuede is extremely soft and will protect your iPad from scratches and scuffs - but of course won't protect it from anything more than that. The pouch on the back is handy for carrying a few iPad accessories, and with prices starting at $19, it's an affordable option. If you're looking for a simple, lightweight way to protect your iPad v1 or iPad v2 - with or without a Smart Cover - I highly recommend the iPad 2 Suede Jacket.

DecalGirl and GelaSkins: Different Levels of iPad Protection

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Laptop Thoughts Talk" @ 08:00 AM

Remember that awesome skin above that I posted about a month or so ago? Well, I decided to swap the iPad 2 32 GB for a 64 GB model - my local Apple Store made it incredibly easy for me, allowing me to keep the 32 GB iPad until the 64 GB models came back into stock (which was an extra two weeks). Even though Apple email support can sometimes be downright creepy, I've had mostly good experiences inside the Apple store. Back to the skin: I removed the Wolverine skin (which came from GelaSkins) and left it for a few hours, hoping it would restore some of it's original form. Read more...

Mophie Workbook for iPad 2

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.macnn.com/articles/11/05...as.magnet.lock/

"Accessory maker Mophie is now shipping a new version of the Workbook for the iPad 2. The case uses a folio design, with a soft interior and a fake leather exterior. One side of the Workbook folds back to work as a stand, allowing an iPad to rest at multiple angles."

Nice case, if you like the folio style. This also allows you to still use the dock connector so you won't have to remove the case to charge or sync. They also utilize the magnetic integration so that when you open the case, it wakes the iPad 2. It sells for $49.95 USD [link] and comes in two colors, black and white. You also get 4 interchangeable straps in a variety of colors.

It's Cool, Retro Cool

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 PM

"You will not buy this. You will not think it's practical. You will not think it's a good return on investment. But you will still lust and droll over Paula Anne Patterson's gorgeous, retrotastic new Kickstarter project."

Well, apparently enough thought it cool enough to fund since the project is now fully funded at over $5,000.00 USD [link]. I have to admit, if I had the space for it I could find a spot for this beauty.

The Head to Head Battle: iPad 2 vs. Motorola XOOM

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Motorola XOOM" @ 07:30 AM

This is a head to head comparison video between the Android 3.0 Honeycomb-based Motorola XOOM and the iOS 4-based Apple iPad 2. Each tablet has pros and cons, and I discuss my findings after using both of them for a while. Chime in with your own thoughts!

Protect the Back of Your iPad 2, and Match Your Smart Cover at the Same Time

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 PM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2011/05/...er-apple-forgot

"Apple's Smart Covers are the perfect fit for the iPad 2. Unfortunately, they don't protect the backside of the iDevice. Now the folks at HyperShield have released their line of Back Covers for the iPad 2."

These are quite nice, and at only $19.95 USD from HyperShield, it seems to be a pretty good deal. Especially when you can get a shield to match the color of your Smart Cover. It also is gel-like so it offers some protection for the back, and is resistant to stretching.

iPad Restore: Someone Please Explain This To Me

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Apple Talk" @ 08:00 AM

I admit it: when it comes to the world of Apple devices, there's still a lot I don't know. Some things make intuitive sense, while others I find baffling. This is the latter. Read more...

India and Japan Show Up Big for iPad 2 Launch

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/04/29/ipad...aws-big-crowds/

"Apple's iPad 2 made its official debut in Japan on Thursday along the white iPhone 4. The second generation tablet debuted for 44,800 yen (US$500) and was available from Apple Stores and the wireless carrier Softbank Mobile."

They were lining up by 9pm the night before the launch in Japan, and in Mumbai, India, the lines were also impressive apparently. Good news for Apple, bad news for those of us hoping the supply chain might loosen up to shorten the wait for ours!

A Real iPad Photography App: Photosmith

Posted by Lee Yuan Sheng in "Digital Home Software" @ 01:30 PM

http://www.macworld.com/article/159...l#lsrc.rss_news

"Professional photographers who use Lightroom have one more excuse reason to swap an iPad for their MacBook while traveling. Squared Enterprises has released Photosmith, an iPad app for organizing your photos on the road before importing them into Lightroom."

When people talk about photography apps for the iPad, they tend to talk about apps that control the miserable thing that is in the iPad2. For us people who take photography seriously however, this is what we mean by a useful app. In this case, it is the ability to apply your Lightroom cataloguing workflow out in the field before hitting your desktop. My only concern is memory space; even a 64GB iPad may not be enough if one is out in the field for a long long time. That and the fact you need Lightroom as your Digital Asset Management (DAM) software. So if you have both an iPad and Lightroom 3, go check this out!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:00 PM

Photography Apps for the iPad 2

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:42 PM

http://www.businessinsider.com/best...pps-2011-4?op=1

"When the iPad 2 launched, it would've been an overstatement to say that there were a few good apps to take advantage of its cameras."

The PhotoShake! app [affiliate link] looks pretty fun, and for you designers out there, the Home Decorator app, both free and pro versions [affiliate link], looks like it is right up your alley. I personally don't see the draw of using this as a camera, still or video, but that is mainly because I haven't had a chance to play around with one. So how about it, are they usable for photos and videos or would you rather stick to the iPhone or your regular camera?

Check Out This Killer iPad 2 Skin!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Apple Talk" @ 03:13 PM

I bought it from Gelaskins for my new iPad 2 - and it looks awesome! The front was a bit difficult to put on and ended up slightly stretching, but it still looks pretty sweet.

iPad 2 at Your Local Toys R Us Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:24 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/04/18/as-p...arrying-ipad-2/

"Apple fans still looking for an iPad 2 can now check the supply at their local Toys R Us store. As expected, Toys R Us is now selling the popular tablet in select stores across the US."

You can find out if your Toys R Us store is carrying it by checking out this list on the Toys R Us website. However, according to this story at MacLife, they are only carrying Wi-Fi models in the 16GB and 32GB black versions and Wi-Fi only 16GB white versions.

Free iPad 2 Starter Guide from Macworld

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/159...logs_ioscentral

"So, you've braved the weeks of waiting and the long Apple Store lines and finally gotten your hands on a new iPad 2. You've taken your first step into a larger world-now it's time to put your shiny new tablet to work. Start by learning all the iPad 2 basics with Macworld's new iPad 2 Starter Guide, available for free in the iBookstore."

You can see the other Superguides here, but this one is a briefer version called a "Starter Guide," specifically for the iPad 2, and best of all it is free. Simple to obtain, just click on this link from your iOS device (has to be from iOS device since their iBookstore only works on them) and download it. What are you waiting for?

So How Are You Using Your Tablet?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive...e_our_ipads.php

"Google has released results of a survey (PDF) on user behavior with regard to tablet computers, the vast majority of which are iPads. Responses indicate that tablet ownership significantly changes our media consumption habits and computer use."

Wednesday we posted a story about how the iPad might be killing consumer PC sales and asked the question of you, was this true for you? What do you use your iPad for and did it replace your PC? There were varying answers to our question, and now this study comes out that shows just how people are using their tablets. In this study (available here in PDF form) it says that for 43% of the responders, the tablet has replaced their PC. Also interesting to me is that playing games tops the list. I would have thought "consuming entertainment" or one of the reading categories would have displaced that, or that they would have at least been higher on the list. But that is my perspective I suppose, since that is what I use my iPad for most of the time. How about you? Does this go along with how you use your tablet or do the results surprise you?

iPad 2 Connection Problems on Verizon?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:51 AM

http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/res...0.usr105634.jpg

"So much for all the excitement that the iPad 2 is available for a carrier other than AT&T."

A co-worker came to me yesterday asking me if I had heard anything about this, and was pretty concerned since she had just ordered one with the 3G service from Verizon. I'm hoping they get beyond the finger pointing and fix the problem that some owners are having when using the 3G service from Verizon on their iPad 2.

iPads Help 2nd Graders With Their Reading Lessons

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.vcstar.com/news/2011/apr...p-2nd-graders/?

"All second-graders at one northern Indiana school will be issued iPad tablet computers next year to help them with reading lessons."

Thanks to $200,000.00 USD grant from Classroom Innovations, the kids at Columbia Elementary School will get some iPads to help them with reading, as well as some parental instruction on how the iPads work and how to keep their kids safe online. The kids aren't the only ones getting some tools though, the 2nd and 3rd grade teachers will all get MacBook Pro laptops.

Tablet Paralysis: Which One Do I Choose?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Laptop Thoughts Talk" @ 09:00 AM

I've been pondering getting a tablet since the first iPad was introduced, but I'm not generally the kind of person who buys a piece of technology and then figures out if I have a good use for it. I'm still not sure how useful I'll find a tablet, but I figure it's worth finding out since this is the beginning of a large wave in mobile computing...I can't just sit it out.

Long-time readers know there are some things about the way Apple does business that really irk me, so it doesn't take much for me to consider products outside the Apple ecosystem if they're viable. When it comes to tablets, that's easier said than done. I find myself leaning fairly heavily toward the iPad 2, but then an email came my way that changed things... Read more...
