Find my iPad with MobileMe

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...bileme_service/

"Apple revealed late on Thursday that its MobileMe service now includes Find My iPad, so iPad owners can locate their multimedia tablet if it's lost or stolen, just like iPhone and iPod touch owners."

I'm assuming it will be up and running by tomorrow, but as of the time of this posting it wasn't listed. The feature will be functional on the Wi-Fi only iPads, although not quite as accurate as it will be on the Wi-Fi/3G combination iPads. It will have the same functionality (remote lock, remote delete, etc) as the iPhone version including sync for iCal, Address Book and Safari bookmarks.

iPad App Store Has Many Choices

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.insanely-great.com/news....t=Google+Reader

"A week after its app submission deadline, Apple has apparently pushed through 1350 apps. Appadvice lists the apps that have been approved by Apple for the iPad, and presumably all or most should be to install this weekend."

AppAdvice has a good walkthrough of the iPad App Store on their site, which should give a good idea of which apps you want to add on Saturday when you pick up your iPad. Not sure how many I'm going to add, as I've said before I am primarily getting mine to use as a book reader and web browser, but who knows, something there may catch my eye.

App of the Week Added to iPad and iPhone App Stores

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/node/15550?u...e+Intelligence)

"Today as part of the updated App Store, Apple has launched a new feature which showcases the 'App of the Week' for both the iPhone and iPad."

Always nice to showcase the good apps, or favorites for that matter to help narrow down choices, or even to give you an idea of what works on your device.

Oh, What's in a Name Anyway?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.itwire.com/your-it-news/...itsu-surrenders

"Apple's uncanny ability to get its own way goes up another notch in the legendary stakes as it does an unknown deal with Fujitsu to assign the entire interest in the iPad name over to the Captains of Crunch!"

This story is week old or thereabouts, but I find it funny that Apple went ahead with the name of the product and promoting it based on a name they didn't even own at the time! According to the article the deal to purchase the name from Fujitsu (or for Fujitsu to let Apple use it if that is the case) wasn't even a done deal until about March 17th. That is cutting it rather close.

Top Ten List of Apps for Your iPad, Where is Star Walk?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.iphonealley.com/current/...t=Google+Reader

"We poked around the iTunes App Store for the coolest and most unique iPad apps and came up with a list of some of the apps we'll be trading in our weekly Starbucks allowance to purchase. In no particular order, below is a small sampling of what we liked."

My favorite of the lot? The Weather HD App (pictured above). For $0.99 USD [link] it certainly looks good, and will work perfectly if you want to use it as a digital picture frame. And since the iPad, at least according to what I've read, doesn't have a weather app this is a good replacement.

One app that isn't on here that should be is Star Walk, available now for iPad for $4.99 USD, only two bucks more than the iPhone version. And TUAW has come out with their list of 20 apps, and it does include Star Walk. You can find their article here.

Netflix on the iPad!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.macdailynews.com/index.p..._in_apples_app/

"Get Netflix on your iPad. Just download this free app and you can instantly watch TV shows & movies streaming from Netflix. Watch as often as you want, it's part of your Netflix unlimited membership, resume watching where you left off on your TV or computer and browse movies and manage your Queue right from your iPad."

Well this is certainly great news, I was hoping they would come out with something and apparently they were working on it all along. You can download it here for free from iTunes, and you can also pick up the free ABC Player app so you can keep up on all the shows from ABC.

An iPad Update to Prepare for Tomorrow

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

Since I'm sure there are several of you out there (like me) that have pre-ordered an iPad, here are a few news items to close out the day since tomorrow we will have that special device in our little hands.

Appletell reported that should your iPad need a new battery, you will still have to pay the $99.00 USD fee, but that will get you a new iPad to go along with the battery. According to the Apple website, "If your iPad requires service due to the battery's diminished ability to hold an electrical charge, Apple will replace your iPad for a service fee." Nice, but there is some disagreement as to how the coverage will apply, as referenced by this article from TidBITS.

One More Way to Finance Your iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/30/arti...o-buy-an-ipad2/

"This is the kind of thing that's just clever enough to work once. Artist Andrew Fulton really wants an iPad (as do most of us), but he doesn't have the money to get one (likewise). So he's decided to try and sell some iPad-related art to raise money for his iPad."

So starting out at $20.00 USD and going up to $125.00 USD, you can commission an original piece of iPad artwork. One of a kind pieces drawn just for you. Clever idea, if only I could draw.

SlingPlayer Plans for iPad Version

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.electronista.com/article...r.apple.tablet/

"SlingPlayer marketing manager Dave Eyler today confirmed that his company is working on a version of SlingPlayer for the iPad. The app should be a visible upgrade from the iPhone version as it will carry higher-resolution streaming from a TV-attached Slingbox. Any other changes weren't mentioned, but Eyler told ZNF that the finished version wouldn't be ready for the Saturday iPad launch."

They are also working on an Android version, moving to the H.264 format. According to the article, it will require newer Slingboxes such as the Solo or Pro-HD. They are also working on a Windows Phone 7 version using Silverlight as the wrapper. I'm hoping that Netflix will come up with something in the near future.

Self Publish on the iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...publishing.html

"Self-publishing authors will be able to offer their titles on Apple's iBookstore for the iPad at almost no cost, potentially breaking down the barriers for independent writers who want to sell their work across the globe."

Smashwords, which is a self-publishing service for authors, has signed a deal to put books into the iBook store, which will also be part of the iBooks application. The books have to end their pricing at 99 cents, ie $9.99 USD, and they can be as low as $0.99 USD. Seems like a pretty good way to get your book published, and get exposure. I see the authors get roughly 85% of the net sales and a smaller figure from affiliate sales. I wonder how that will work with Apple since they have a different breakdown, any thoughts?

Apple Charging for iPad Updates?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...os_updates.html

"Apple has posted the terms of its firmware licensing agreement for the iPad, which restricts free operating software updates to the current major reference release."

To quote from the documents found here, "Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped from Apple on your iPad, for free. For example, if your iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would provide you with any iPad OS software updates it might release up to and including the iPad 4.x software release. Such updates and releases may not necessarily include all of the new software features that Apple releases for newer iPad models."

Sounds like the iPad updates will be more along the lines of the iPod Touch instead of the iPhone.

Brightcove Versus Flash

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...5_for_ipad.html

"Brightcove's partnerships with The New York Times and Time magazine will allow HTML5 to seamlessly replace Adobe Flash video content on the publications' Web sites for compatibility with Apple's iPad."

Time and The New York Times are clients, and have already experimented with this so it is possible that by the time the iPad launches, their sites (as well as some other clients) will be ready. According to the article, "the platform provides support for intelligent device detection, playlist rendering, and playback of H.264 encoded video content." CBS is also doing some experimentation with this, and Google has already added support for HTML5 on YouTube. Seems like a pretty good alternative, what are your thoughts?

WSJ Announces Pricing for iPad Version

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/wall-stree...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"Maintaining the pretense of objective journalist integrity by reporting in third-person upon itself, the Wall Street Journal claims that "according to a person familiar with the matter," they'll be charging you $17.99 a month to read on your iPad."

Personally, I don't read enough articles to justify this so I'm not tempted, but even if I was a current subscriber this might be a bit too much for me to pay for a digital version. The $17.99 USD per month works out to $10.00 USD less per month than the regular subscription, roughly $216.00 USD per year. What are your thoughts?

Best Buy Will Also Sell iPads on April 3rd

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._locations.html

"Apple on Monday announced that the iPad will go on sale this Saturday, April 3, at all of its 221 U.S. Apple retail locations, as well as "most" Best Buy stores. 'iPad connects users with their apps and content in a far more intimate and fun way than ever before,' Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a press release. 'We can't wait for users to get their hands and fingers on it this weekend.'"

If you go to an Apple Store, you get some hands on treatment with employees helping you set up your iPad as well as some sessions you can attend that will help you get the most out of your iPad. But if you haven't reserved one for pickup at your nearest Apple Store, then this is a good option. There are 675 or so Best Buy stores that sell Apple products so you have plenty of choices.

Don't Have the Cash for an iPad? Here is an Option...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 10:00 AM

http://mashable.com/2010/03/22/ipod...able+(Mashable)

"If you reeeeally want an iPad but don't want to scrap together $499 for the entry-level model, then the iPodMeister service has an interesting solution for you - swap 600 CDs for Steve Jobs's newest product."

Interesting solution to solve a problem, if you have enough CDs to exchange. You can get more info from the iPodMeister website.

How Will You Use Your iPad?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-1...subj=News-Apple

"As the April 3 launch of the iPad approaches, market researcher ComScore has found that consumers expect to use Apple's tablet mainly for surfing the Web and checking e-mail--not for rushing the App Store."

They survey by ComScore asked 2,176 users and found that only 26% of the future iPad owners would use it to access and download applications, while 36% were unlikely to do this. Most are planning to do what I intend to do, that is surf the net, read books, use email and watch movies. You can see the survey here.

Apple Increases Game Marketshare

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 10:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-1...subj=News-Apple

"Those who thought Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch would not live up to the promise of being a great mobile gaming platform are in for a big surprise."

19% of all portable gaming software sold in 2009 was done so by Apple, which is quite a jump from 2008 when it sold 5%. During the same time period Sony fell to 11% and Nintendo dropped to 70%, drops of 9% and 5% respectively. They are also estimating this could go even higher with the release of the iPad, but I'm not so sure. I think it will be great for gaming, but I'm thinking this device is going to be used more for the things that Jobs was demonstrating (reading emails, surfing from the couch, etc). I guess we shall see after April 3rd, but what are your thoughts?

Perseus Books Signs With Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/03/23/larg...gns-with-apple/

"Despite threats from Amazon that it will stop selling the independent publisher's books if they sign on with Apple's iBookstore, Perseus Books Group, the largest independent publisher, has signed a deal with Apple."

Zagat and Workman Press also signed deals, so they certainly aren't responding favorably to pressure from Amazon to refrain from signing with Apple. There are are still several that haven't signed deals, but no matter (at least for me) since Amazon is set to come through with a Kindle App for the iPad, along with Barnes & Noble.

Get Your Ten-Pack of iPads!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/03/...l-institutions/

"There has been quite a lot of speculation around Apple's capacity to face demand for the iPad. The latest to date, their decision to limit iPad pre-orders to two units per customer, might however not be the presage we believed it was."

If you are an accredited educational institution it appears you can indeed get yourself a ten-pack of iPads, and a discount of about $20.00 USD per iPad.
