AT&T Runs Out of iPhone 4s for Launch Day

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:32 PM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/06/...nes-launch-day/

"That's it folks, we've just been told by an AT&T rep that apparently, the carrier just ran out of iPhones 4 for launch day. In consequence, all orders placed from now will normally only be available between the 25th of June and the 5th of July."

I tried numerous times, even on Apple's website, and was out of luck for pre-order, so I'll be hoofing it into an Apple Store on launch day to buy one. Not only was this a rough day when trying to do a pre-order, it also appears AT&T might have another security problem according to Gizmodo via Apple Insider. We'll see how that security problem turns out soon I'm sure, but it is good to see such a high interest in the new iPhone. I'm just hoping that there a few left when I go to get in line for mine!

Yea, I'd Pre-Order That Nifty iPhone 4 But...

"'I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.' Remember the scene from 2001 when astronaut Dave Bowman couldn't get the rogue computer running Discovery to respond to his commands?"

The image above is what I get on AT&T site, and on Apple I never get past the selection screen for black 16GB or 32GB, but it appears I'm not the only one having problems. How about you? Any problems pre-ordering your iPhone 4 today?

Reserve Any Color You Want, As Long As It's Black!

"...there's some doubt as to whether or not AT&T is going to have any white iPhones on stock for launch day (or in the coming days after)."

Well there is no doubt at Apple, as you can see from the screenshot above when I checked on pre-ordering an iPhone 4. No word yet on when the white iPhone 4's will be available, but it sounds like they won't even be available on launch day.

Which iPhone 4 Are You Going to Reserve?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:30 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/06/iphone-4-buy/

"It's decision time: 16 or 32? Of course, I am talking about whether you should purchase the $199 iPhone 4 with 16 GB of flash memory space or will you need the 32 GB model and pay Apple $299? The answer to that question depends on how you anticipate that you will be using the new device."

One perspective on which version iPhone 4 you might need. I tend to agree that the 16GB is probably good for most people, even with some video thrown in, at least that is what I am leaning towards. What version are you going to pre-order?

Where Will You Go to Pre-Order Your iPhone 4 Tomorrow?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...e_tomorrow.html

"Best Buy announced Monday that it will be an authorized participant in Apple's iPhone 4 pre-launch on Tuesday, in which customers can visit one of its retail locations to reserve one of the new handsets for pickup the following week."

And not only Best Buy, but Radio Shack and of course AT&T and Apple will let you pre-order your iPhone 4 tomorrow. Wal-Mart isn't on the pre-order list however, but you have plenty of options regardless of where you live in the U.S. to order your iPhone. I'm still undecided, I have Best Buy, AT&T and an Apple Store all close to me. Where are you going to pre-order your iPhone 4?

Are You a Power User? Android Versus iPhone 4!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:00 AM

"The newest iPhone comes out in two weeks; the Android OS continues to deploy on better and better hardware; and both operating systems roll out exciting new features and innovations with each release. So which deserves your hard-earned cash?"

Interesting comparison of the two systems, broken down into individual capabilities by LifeHacker. The measured 20 of the categories they most cared about and declared a winner for each one, so you can kind of match up the categories you care about as well and see which one will suit you better. They gave the Apps category a tie, which seems rather odd to me since you can't even compare the two app stores but they base it on apps being denied and that there is a lot of "crap" in the iTunes App Store. Hmm, maybe so, but at least I know the apps will work correctly on my iPhone. Anyway, you can judge for yourself!

Apple and Microsoft, Together Again

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 07:00 AM

"Guess what's coming to San Diego in two weeks? If you answered iPhone 4, congratulations for being right but not giving the right answer. Microsoft plans to open a new retail store on the same day (its second in California)."

It's not so much that they are opening a Microsoft Store on the same day as the launch of the iPhone 4, it's that they are opening the store next door to an Apple Store. Rather odd timing, perhaps they are hoping to get some of the residual interest that will be generated from the iPhone 4 launch and will get a few stragglers wandering in to check out what they have. This might really be good timing from them after all. Maybe Ballmer and Jobs will show up and have a stare down.

SoftBank Announces iPhone 4 Pricing in Japan

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://9to5mac.com/expense_iphone_4...e+Intelligence)

"Softbank has revealed Japanese prices for the iPhone 4. Prices are unsubsidized -- but the carrier has introduced different data deals designed to ease the pain (a little)."

If you are in Japan and plan on pre-ordering an iPhone 4 on June 15th, you should know they will only have black available, you have to provide ID and the prices will be 57,600 yen ($699.00 USD) for the 32GB version and 46.080 yen ($500.00 USD) for the 16GB version. I'm thinking this isn't out of line with other countries pricing or is it? The bonus here is that SoftBank is offering an unlimited plan for 4,410 yen ($48.00 USD) per month, but they give you a subsidy of 1,920 yen ($20.00 USD) per month, bringing your true monthly cost to 2,490 yen ($28.00 USD). Pay a little more for the iPhone 4 and save quite a bit on the monthly charge for unlimited. You can find out more about this plan and the other ones they offer at the MobileInJapan website.

O2 UK iPhone Data Pricing Unveiled

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/151...l?lsrc=rss_main

"O2 is the first UK network to unveil pricing for its iPhone 4 tariffs. Apple's latest smartphone will be available on either 18- or 24-month contracts, with prices starting from £25 for 100 minutes of calls and unlimited text messaging."

O2 is going the way of AT&T though, when it comes to data. They have several variations ranging in prices but the data caps start at 500MB per month and go up to 1GB per month for data. They haven't revealed, however, the actual price of the iPhone 4, at least if they have I haven't seen it. You can find out more at the O2 site, where they have a handy chart so you can tell exactly what you will be paying for data based on the contract you purchase.

Just Buy That 3GS? No Worries, AT&T Has an Option For You

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:41 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...3gs_buyers.html

"More A&T customers are about to become happy. Just days after the company announced that anyone with an iPhone contract ending at anytime in 2010 would be eligible for a iPhone 4 upgrade, comes word that recent purchasers of the iPhone 3GS will also be getting a deal."

Nice deal from AT&T, depending on your date of purchase, get a credit on your account between what you paid for the iPhone 3GS. Alternatively, you can use your iPhone 3GS until the launch date of the iPhone 4 and then you can bring your iPhone 3GS back in, pay the difference, and take home an iPhone 4. The details are here, in a memo obtained by modmyi.com.

O2 Released iPhone 4 Upgrade Info

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 PM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/06/...y-upgrade-fees/

"O2 in the UK are now offering all current customers a chance to end their contract early for a limited-time only reduced fee."

So the news from O2 Uk is that if you sign up for a new 18 or 24 month contract, you get to end your current contract as long as you pay a fee of £20 for each month left on your current contract. You can find out how much you will have to pay by going to the O2 site.

iPhone 4 or HTC Evo? What To Do, What To Do...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010...-vs-htc-evo-4g/

"Apple's new iPhone 4 is the company's biggest update yet for the handset and it will have you drooling. The phone is a snazzily slim, glass-backed slab that boasts some impressive specs: dual cameras, a big operating system update and video chat, among other things. Apple introduced the phone at its developer conference Monday and said it will be available on AT&T's network starting June 24."

A buddy of mine is seriously considering switching from the iPhone to the Sprint HTC Evo, pondering wether or not he wants to quite the iPhone club so I was curious about the comparison between the two phones. Well, luckily Wired has the answer with this article that does indeed compare the two. The big difference, obviously, is that the Sprint Evo runs on the 4G network, but with limited availability of the network, it may not be that much of an advantage. The comparison chart is handy though, so hopefully it will at least put this in perspective if you are also considering switching.

O2 and Orange Announce Launch Date for iPhone 4

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/06/...e-24-o2-orange/

"Great news for UK Apple fans: O2 UK has now become the first international carrier to confirm that it'll be serving up the new iPhone 4 in time for launch on June 24th."

I'm sure they were worried they would be delayed like they were for the iPad, but it looks like they will be selling the iPhone 4 right along with the US of A on June 24th.

AT&T Pricing and Upgrades in Eligibility

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/06/07/atan...g-for-iphone-4/

"TUAW blogger TJ Luoma wasn't happy when he found out that his iPhone upgrade date isn't until sometime in February of 2011, so he called AT&T to find out how much it would cost him to upgrade to the iPhone 4."

What he found out was that he too would be eligible for the discount pricing as AT&T had moved his eligibility up like they have for many customers in advance of WWDC yesterday. Nice to know as well that the pricing will be the same as it was for the 3G/3GS when they were released, $199.00 USD for the 16GB version, and $299.00 USD for the 32GB version.

iPhone 4, is it All You Thought it Would Be?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:35 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...veils_iphone_4/

"Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the company's next generation iPhone during his World Wide Developers Conference keynote presentation on Monday. The new version of the combination iPod and smartphone looks like the images that leaked to the media, includes a front-facing camera for the first time, and is called iPhone 4."

In reading the blogs yesterday, I thought it was pretty funny when Steve said "Stop me if you've seen this before" as he unveiled the iPhone 4. Good to see some humor displayed about it. But I digress! Lots of new features, over 100 or so including the new camera with LED flash, video calling, higher resolution display and, according to Steve, the "thinnest smartphone ever." Besides the improved camera and the cool video calling features, what I really liked to hear was the improved battery life. So, now that you've had time to digest yesterdays announcement, what are your thoughts about the iPhone 4?
