Buy Verizon iPhone 4, No Wait...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...ntenna_problem/

"The Verizon iPhone 4 has the same antenna attenuation problems that the original AT&T model suffered from, according to Consumer Reports. The magazine said on Friday that just as with the GSM version of the iPhone, users can cause a drop in signal strength on the device if they bridge the gap in the outer band with their fingers."

When the Verizon iPhone 4 came out, and iFixIt did their magic, Consumer Reports said the design changes led them to recommend the Verizon iPhone 4. Now comes word that they cannot recommend it due to the same antenna issues, issues that every phone has, depending on how you hold it. Whatever, as the young kids say.

Eye Scope for iPhone 4 Helps You Get Closer Than You Thought Possible

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.thumbsupuk.com/products/...&prodid=871&cc=

"An ingenious zoom lens that fits your iPhone 4.Get up close and personal with this amazing iPhone zoom lens. Simply click it on to your existing iPhone camera and get picture detail you never thought possible."

You would definitely need a tripod for this, or at least I would since under normal conditions I have problems keeping it steady. Amplified and I have a big problem. But this is pretty slick, since all you have to do is attach the universal bracket to your iPhone 4 and take that close up. And yes, it does come with a tripod.

iPhone 4 Wins Best Mobile Device at Mobile World Congress

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:26 AM

http://electricpig.co.uk/2011/02/16...e-award-at-mwc/

"Apple might not bother showing up at Mobile World Congress each year, but that's not stopped the iPhone 4 snaffling the ‘Best Mobile Device' award at this year's GSMA awards, held at the Barcelona-based mobile bash last night."

GSMA runs the mobile event, and despite what Consumer Reports thinks, awarded the iPhone 4 the best mobile device award. Pretty good, in spite of Apple being a no-show at the event.

Consumer Reports Loves iPhone 4 Now, The Verizon One Anyway

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/consumer-r...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"Thanks to the massive headache of Antennagate, Consumer Reports famously felt that it could not recommend the iPhone 4 to its readers... an approbation that, as we all know, tanked Apple stock, prompted Cupertino to dump unsold iPhones by the millions into an Arizona landfill and ultimately led to Apple's enthusiastic embrace of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system."

Riiiiiiiight. All in jest of course, although the Consumer Reports article on the AT&T iPhone 4 did give the critics plenty of fodder. But they think with the internal changes found when iFixIt did the teardown that these problems have been corrected. Perhaps not according to this article. Overall I think the issue was overblown and to NOT recommend the iPhone 4 because of it was ridiculous, especially when it was shown that there were several other makes/models of cell phones that suffered the same problem. I'm with the author, it's all about the page views.

Mophie Juice Pack For Your Verizon iPhone 4

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.appletell.com/apple/comm...etell+Appletell

"Whether you're picking up your Verizon iPhone 4 in-stores today or expecting it to be shipped to your house in a couple of days, one thing is for sure-you're going to need extra juice for your iPhone 4."

Just announced but not set to ship until February 28th, this will run roughly $80.00 USD, but if you plan on being on your iPhone 4 a lot or just not in an area with convenient charging options, these are great devices to have.

iFixIt Does it Again, This Time to the iPhone 4

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.appletell.com/apple/comm...etell+Appletell

"iFixIt's latest illustrated hardware teardown dissects the new Verizon variant of the iPhone 4, and company CEO Kyle Wiens says the internals of this CDMA iPhone 4 are more interesting than he had expected. He says everyone knew the external appearance of the CDMA iPhone 4 was changed slightly, but he had no idea how many differences were to be uncovered inside, amounting to a substantial redesign, with differences more significant than, for example, those between the iPhone 3G and the 3GS."

One of those changes that surprised him was the type of chip used, the same Qualcomm MDM6600 chip that supports GSM and DCMA technology. Could this be what is going to be in the iPhone 5? Is Apple preparing a "world phone" for the masses? Baby steps I suppose and putting this in a Verizon only phone was a good test for the configuration I'm sure. I don't doubt that this is the where the iPhone is heading, I guess the only question is how long is it going to take to get there? What are your thoughts?

Verizon Announces Trade-In Program

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/25/...ance-of-iphone/

"Not exactly a huge surprise here, but it looks like Verizon will be doing everything it can to pair folks with a new iPhone 4 when it launches on the carrier next month, even if they've just purchased a new phone on Verizon or another carrier."

Yea, this is just one more reason to switch, or at least Verizon is hoping you feel that way. The plan, outlined in a recent investor meeting, will allow you to appraise your device when you want to trade it in on a Verizon iPhone 4. And they will also let existing customers trade in a recently purchased smartphone and get a $200.00 USD gift card, or $75.00 USD gift card if it is a feature phone. Unfortunately it follows similar plans that force you to buy the iPhone 4 and then wait for the debit card, which can take up to several weeks. Those types of plans annoy me, just give me the credit on my iPhone now and forget about mailing me a debit card.

Apple Changes iPhone Screws

Posted by Joe Johaneman in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.hardmac.com/news/2011/01...s-in-the-iphone

"When the new MacBook Air came out, we talked about the special screwdriver, which it is necessary to possess in order to open the laptop. It is a Pentalobe, almost impossible to find outside of Apple after-sale repair centers.According to iFixit, the last iPhone 4 delivered also carry that type of screws in order to make them harder to take apart."

According to most of the articles I've read, not only do the latest iPhone 4 shipments have these screws; iPhones brought in for repairs are returning with these screws instead of the Phillips they went in with. If that's the case, I'd be annoyed. If I bought it with Phillips screwheads, I want those to stay there unless I gave my express permission to change them(not that I'd consider the iPhone exactly user servicable, but it's the point of the matter). If it really bothered me that much, there is a solution thanks to the folks at iFixit.

Switching? Educate Yourself

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

http://mashable.com/2011/01/11/cdma...able+(Mashable)

"Verizon made it official today: it will be getting the iPhone, ending years of AT&T exclusivity in the U.S. With the Verizon iPhone a reality, there is one question that millions of iPhone owners are now asking themselves: should I switch carriers?"

We were just talking about this weren't we? Well in my case a bit different since I'm looking for a different device, so if you currently are on the AT&T network, are you thinking about switching over? If so, you might get some insight with this article, and even if you aren't considering switching, it is still a good article to read to educate yourself about the different networks out there. So speaking of switching, since it's the question everyone wants answered, are you?

Hotspot Option Creates Choices, MiFi or iPhone?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

http://gigaom.com/mobile/goodbye-mi...GigaOM:+Mobile)

"Wednesday's anticipated Verizon iPhone launch event offered one surprise: users can share the 3G data connection with five devices, turning the iPhone into a mobile hotspot."

And so the dilemma is to keep the MiFi Mobile Hotspot or go ahead and make the jump to the iPhone 4. I too, am going through the process, trying to determine if I should keep my Verizon MiFi. On one hand, it would be handy to have another iPhone just in case something happened to my current iPhone on AT&T, allowing me to still have communication capabilities, something I cannot do with my MiFi. And I wouldn't have to carry more than one charger like I do now. And the issue about not being able to use voice and data simultaneously would be moot since this isn't going to be a primary phone. What are your thoughts?

Verizon and the iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:12 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...early_feb_.html

"Ending years of anticipation, Apple and Verizon announced Tuesday that the iPhone 4 is coming to the largest wireless carrier in the U.S. iPhone 4 will be available on the Verizon Wireless network beginning Thursday, February 10 for a suggested retail price of $199.99 for the 16GB model and $299.99 for the 32GB model with a new two year customer agreement. iPhone 4 will be available at more than 2,000 Verizon Wireless Communications Stores nationwide, online at www.verizonwireless.com/iphone, at Apple Retail Stores, at the Apple Store (www.apple.com), at Apple Authorized Resellers, and by calling 1-800-2 JOIN IN. "

I don't think it was any big surprise that the iPhone was coming to Verizon, what with all the speculation that really got legs once the announcement of the event today was released. And I wasn't exactly surprised that with this iPHone you won't be able to have simultaneous data and voice capability since that has been discussed as a hindrance all along. However, what really got my attention was the part of the announcement dealing with the mobile WiFi hotspot capability that the Verizon iPhone would provide with iOS 4.2.5. Granted, it will be on Verizon's network so it won't exactly be the fastest WiFi connection (at least where I am at), but what it does is possibly pressure AT&T into possibly allowing the same thing. I'm hoping this little tidbit will get AT&T to rethink how they are providing service to their customers and, in hopes of keeping some of them, provide the same level of service on their network. The talk is that it will be part of the new iOS that Verizon will be using. What are your thoughts?

If you have Verizon and want to know all about how to get yourself an iPhone 4, they have set up an FAQ page with (hopefully) all your answers.

Keeping With the Theme, What's on Your iPhone?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/28/...ories-and-tips/

"Someone must really like you -- otherwise, how did you end up with an iPhone this holiday season? Yeah, we know, iPads don't really fit into stockings. Besides, your parent or significant other got you an arguably better gift in the cheaper (with two-year contract, of course), more compact, and more recently updated iPhone 4."

A good mixture of paid and free apps that they deem essential (can you sense a theme to the posts today?), and I certainly agree on Dropbox, Pandora and the Kindle App. And I highly recommend the Shazam app as well as Find My iPhone. The rest I think aren't on my top ten but are definitely worth considering. I round out my apps with several banking and of course Twitter and Facebook. So for those new iPhone owners out there, what do you veteran iPhone owners suggest for apps they might get the most from?

MyPower is Your Power Solution for iPhone 4

Posted by Doug Raeburn in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:36 AM

The MyPower from Tekkeon is a battery case that is claimed to be the lightest such case for the iPhone 4. It has several unique features that distinguish it from its direct competitors, the most important of which is a replaceable battery. And it fits better in your pocket than other cases that I've tried. It's available for $74.95 at Amazon.com (affiliate link) in black, red or white. Additional Ultra Slim Battery Modules are available from Tekkeon for $24.95, regularly $39.95; Ultra Power Modules are $49.95.

Wal-Mart Bonus if You Buy iPhone 4

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:00 PM

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB100...ech_LEFTTopNews

"On Monday, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. began giving consumers a $50 gift card when they purchased an iPhone 4, part of a "last-minute gifts" promotion. The world's biggest retailer sells the latest version of the iPhone for $197 -two dollars less than Apple and AT&T Inc. do-with a two-year contract."

Basically this drops it down to the same price point Sam's Club is selling the iPhone 4, $147.00 USD. I guess they want to make sure you aren't penalized for not having a Sam's Club in your area.

Sam's Club Selling iPhone 4 for $147

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.gearlog.com/2010/12/ipho...davis+(Gearlog)

"Where's the cheapest place to pick up an iPhone 4 these days? For the next week or so, that title belongs to Walmart offshoot Sam's Club."

This beats the Radio Shack deal of $149.00 USD and will extend until Christmas Day. This is for the 16GB version, and if you don't want to spend that much for an iPhone 4, you can pick up the 3GS version for $47.00 USD. Sometimes it does pay to wait until the last minute to get your Christmas shopping done eh?

Is Your Smartphone Camera Good Enough?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:00 PM

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/04/t...ner=rss&emc=rss

"Ariel Dunitz-Johnson, a 30-year-old illustrator in San Francisco, bought a point-and-shoot camera in May. But in July, she bought a smartphone, with a camera built in. Soon, whenever she wanted to take a picture, she found herself reaching for the smartphone, a Droid Incredible. She barely uses her point-and-shoot, a Panasonic DMC-LX3."

I tended to do this, but after my last trip to Dallas, I'm moving the other way back towards my point-and-shoot camera. Some of the shots I was taking didn't turn out very well, and once the moment passed, it was pretty hard to get another shot (I was taking pics of some of the football players as they passed through a tunnel). It could have been my inexperience in using my iPhone 4 to take pictures of a moving target, so to fix it on the fly what I eventually did was just film it and take screen shots, which turned out better than the regular pictures I was taking. My pics would have been a lot better had I been carrying my other camera. In my case, the "inconvenience" of carrying a camera would have been worth it to me, hindsight of course kicking in. How about you, do you think your smartphone is "better" for your needs than your point-and-shoot camera?

RadioShack Offers Trade-ins for Your Old iPhones

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:00 PM

http://gigaom.com/apple/save-up-to-...(GigaOM:+Apple)

"Is an iPhone 4 on your holiday wish list? If yes, RadioShack has an attractive deal starting Saturday, Dec. 4. You instantly save $50 on the iPhone 4 and 3GS, but with trade-ins on your old device, that could climb as high as $175."

Not bad, pickup an iPhone 4 and get just short of $175.00 USD off if you trade in a 3GS. You can see if your old iPhone meets the Radio Shack standards by going to their online appraisal tool, and if it does fit the bill make sure you hurry in as this only lasts until December 11th.

HTC Antennae Problem? No Problem Apparently...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.insignificantthoughts.co...s-theyre-right/

"Remember Antennagate? The manufactured controversy that no one I know who has an iPhone 4 was able to replicate? Where if you held a certain spot, the phone would lose all reception? Steve Jobs noted that all phones suffer from attenuation problems and showed video of multiple brands of phones failing when held the same way."

And since it is happening to their own handset, the HD7, it is apparently not a big deal according to HTC, which is quite a different tune they are singing in comparison to how they reacted to the iPhone 4 situation. To top it off, HTC having their own problems certainly isn't drawing the attention in the press that the iPhone 4 problems brought is it? Wonder what Consumer Reports will say about this?

Gorillamobile for the iPhone 4

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/09/...ally-to-iphone/

"Are you ready for a barrage of Apple-specific peripherals from the labs of Joby? Can't say we are either, but they're coming regardless. Today, the famed creator of the original Gorillapod has pumped out a seriously overhauled version of the Gorillamobile, with this one designed to work specifically (and only) with the iPhone 4."

Available today for $39.95 USD, it comes with a case the iPhone 4 slides into, which then attaches to the tripod. Looks fairly simple but effective. Check out the Joby site for more info.

"Glassgate" Leads Apple to Pull Slider Cases from Store

Posted by Joe Johaneman in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:30 AM

http://www.tipb.com/2010/11/09/slid...-due-glassgate/

"According to Cult of Mac, Apple's retail stores are no longer selling slider cases for the iPhone 4 because of what's been referred to as 'Glassgate' - the scratching and cracking of the iPhone 4's glass due to trapped dirt. Even cases that are part of Apple's 'made for iPhone' program are reportedly being pulled."

I have not seen an example of this in the wild, but I'm glad Apple is being proactive while they investigate this problem. It's going to hurt the bottom lines of a lot of case companies, but it'll probably save Apple from later trouble if "glassgate" is real. Have you had a problem with slider cases cracking your iPhone 4's glass?
