Not Exactly Tough, But It's Reliable!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 AM

"Last month, warranty company SquareTrade shared the results of a study of warranty claims showing a higher accidental damage rate for the iPhone 4 than the iPhone 3GS, with the iPhone 4 having a particular propensity for cracked glass due to the fact that glass is used on both the front and back of the device."

So, as log as you don't drop your iPhone, you should be able to use it longer than any of the other phones on the list. It is, obviously, more fragile because of it's design. But that being said, looking at the accident rates it isn't that much worse than Motorola or HTC. I would have expected the accident rate to be higher.

Impactband, Sturdy iPhone 4 Protection

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:30 AM

"Among the many cases for the iPhone 4, most offer some level of protection and absorb some of the shock of an impact. But few are capable of protecting the glass front and back of the iPhone in the same was as Base One Labs' new Impactband, a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) case that extends over the sides of the iPhone to prevent its surface from ever touching the ground, even when dropped from significant height."

The added thickness keeps sensitive parts of the iPhone 4 from being at the point of impact, such as the buttons, front and back of the phone. They have tested this for protection ability from 16 feet, and you can see the videos of this $22.00 USD product at the company site for BaseOneLabs.

Has Apple Given Up on the White iPhone 4?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

"Following another delay until spring 2011 for the white iPhone 4 and rumors that the device has been canceled altogether, Apple has now removed mention of the model from its primary ordering page for the iPhone 4 in all localizations of its online store."

I have been reading several stories over the last week about delays in production but that potentially the white iPhone 4 would make it's appearance in the Spring of 2011, but perhaps that is now wishful thinking as Apple has removed any mention of the white iPhone 4 from their pages on the online store. You can still see photos of this white iPhone in promotional shots, but it sounds like it might not ever happen. What are your thoughts? Do you think it will happen or is this a color that just isn't going to make it on the iPhone 4?

Wednesday, October 13, 2010 App Updated for Barcode Scanning

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 07:00 AM

"The Amazon iPhone app received an update Tuesday, allowing iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 users to scan barcodes anywhere and instantly compare prices on the scanned item at"

Great for comparison shopping, just point at the barcode and you can tell instantly if has a better deal on it. Now the question is, will it be enough of a deal to fight back that instant gratification urge and allow you to wait for it to ship versus buying on the spot.

Yahoo! Messenger Updated to Allow Video Calls, Among Other Things

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:00 AM

"Yahoo has updated its Messenger iPhone app to allow video calls from the iPhone to a computer, a feature that Apple has yet to release for its FaceTime standard."

So now you can use Yahoo! Messenger 2.0 [link] to call not only another iPhone 4, but your home computer, be it a Mac or a PC. And you don't have to be on Wi-Fi to use it, as Yahoo! has enabled it for 3G calling as well. Obviously they recommend you use it on Wi-Fi but in a pinch, fire it up on 3G. iChat, are you next?

Verizon? It's Anyone's Guess At This Point

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:20 AM

"Earlier this week, The Wall Street Journal went out on a limb, and stated that we'd see a Verizon iPhone by early 2011. Obviously, we all took this with a grain of salt: more often than not, such predictions turn out to be false. We've heard rumors of a Verizon iPhone for years now, and so far, nothing's come of it."

We don't go into rumors around here too much, but this one is really getting legs. First the Wall Street Journal reports unnamed source that confirms Verizon is getting the iPhone in first quarter of 2011, then the New York Times picks it up and says they have also confirmed it independently, also with an unnamed source. If that wasn't enough, even our statewide paper The Oregonian started reporting on it and the cable news programs also started reporting it. How many AT&T subscribers will switch carriers and how many current Verizon subscribers will switch to the iPhone is anyone's guess, but the buzz around here is such that I expect it to be a pretty high number. Right now though, the only sure things is that if it isn't coming, there are going to be a lot of people with egg on their faces.

Use Your iPhone on a Standard Tripod With Glif

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

"Glif is a simple iPhone 4 accessory with two primary functions: mounting your iPhone to a standard tripod, and acting as a kickstand to prop your iPhone up at an angle. From these two functions emerge numerous uses: hands-free FaceTiming, watching videos, making movies, using your iPhone as an alarm clock, and many others."

The video on the KickStarter site shows several options for this innovative adapter for your iPhone 4. To get one, all you have to do is pledge at least $20.00 USD and they will ship you one as soon as they are manufactured. From the looks of the pledge amount, it won't be long. You can also find out more at the Glif site.

So How Do You Convert Video to Take Advantage of the iPhone 4?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

"The iPhone 4 just begs for some good video content to be played on its high-resolution display-which, contrary to popular belief, isn't made of retinas. The easiest way to get video is through Apple's iTunes Store, but there are many reasons why you might want to watch videos that you already have lying around instead. If you're lucky, your video is already in a format that the iPhone supports. In that case, just add the file to iTunes and sync. But what if it's not in the right format?"

Ars has a good writeup on how to convert it to the right format, either using iTunes or my personal favorite Handbrake. The process is fairly easy, even for someone like me that doesn't do a lot of it. So if you are interested in converting some of those videos you have to make them iPhone 4 compatible, it's well worth the read.

Google Goggles Now For the iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 07:00 AM

"Searching with Google on your mobile phone can be an eye-opening experience. Now your phone's camera can even help to find out more about the world around you."

This is a great addition to the Google Mobile App, and as the video shows above, the Google Goggles feature is easy to use. Take a picture of a landmark and get results about it and the area around you. Or take a picture of the cover of the book and get info on pricing and where you can purchase it. This is only supported on the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4, as long as it is running iOS 4. You can find out more about it at the Google Help Center.

Retina Display the Focus of the New Ad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:46 AM,+iPad,+iPod)

"Apple has just posted a new iPhone 4 commercial, this one called "Every" and focused on the 960×640 Retina Display."

They hit on all the high points of the screen, such as zooming into a child's face so you can see the freckles, checking out the font of the New York Times and home video highlights. Seems natural that they focus on the screen since that seems to be the focus of the competition lately. And of course they hit the emotions as only Apple can do.

Competition for the iPhone 4 Retina Display?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 07:00 AM

"WVGA's so 2009, isn't it? Sharp has broken Android's usual 800 (or 854) x 480 mold this week with the introduction of the IS03 for Japan's KDDI au network, boasting a full 960 x 640 on its 3.5-inch screen -- matching the iPhone 4's so-called retina display -- along with Advanced Super View (ASV) technology, delivering the same kind of viewing angle benefits you find in IPS."

For all it's advantages, including the 9.6 megapixel camera, it is only available in Japan. Wonder why they say "so-called retina display," isn't that what it is called? Regardless, I like the fact this phone has the ability for the contactless payment system and the image stabilization option, as well as the support for Global Passport CDMA. Oh and it is soon to be available in three colors. Lot's of advantages, if you are in Japan.

iPhone 4 Retina Display, How Does it Compare?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:31 AM

"Ray Soneira, President of DisplayMate Technologies, conducted a shootout between the iPhone 4 Retina Display and the Samsung Galaxy S Super OLED Display."

He also compares the iPhone 4 with the iPhone 3GS, the Motorola Droid, and the Google Nexus One, as well as a "Super" LCD versus OLED comparison. Bottom line, the iPhone 4 display is, in the words of the reviewer, the brightest and sharpest display and is the most power efficient. If you don't believe me, you can read the report here [link], but even if you do believe me the report is an interesting read.

"Today is September 30, the last day of the free case program that fixes the iPhone 4's antenna design problem. So if you didn't get yours, now it's the time to do it following these instructions."

If you haven't ordered yours, download the app and get with it.

iPhone 4 Huge in China

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"After a slow start (with gray-market competition), Apple is now taking China by storm."

Speculation is, due to the shorter gap between the announcement and the availability in China, this should preclude people from buying so many knock-offs. Regardless, it certainly is popular, and why not!

Consumer Reports Just Can't Let It Go...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"Apple announced on Friday that it would end its free case program for the iPhone 4 on October 1st, and Consumer Reports has issued a statement condemning the move as unacceptable. The magazine iterated its decision to continue to not recommend the iPhone 4 until Apple issues a permanent fix for what it says are reception issues on the device."

This is ridiculous. In light of several articles about other phones that have similar issues (that don't offer free cases at all, or that would even be fixed by a free case), I find it silly that Consumer Reports is still beating this dead horse. Yes, on certain iPhone 4s ( but not mine or anyone I've talked to that own one) you can see some signal degradation, if you hold the iPhone in such an odd manner as to make it unlikely that it would happen to you. To me this speaks more of a saving face gesture than anything else by Consumer Reports. They have grabbed onto this antenna issue with both hands and now they are stuck defending their position. Consumer Reports has lost credibility in the past for other issues in my opinion, and this further decreases their relevance as an objective source for product reviews.

Apple Ending Free Case Program, Or Are They?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:59 AM

"All good things must come to an end, and now that Apple has largely put the fires out on the public relations nightmare of Antennagate, they'll be ending their free iPhone 4 case program come September 30th... unless you complain loud enough."

According to Apple the program ends September 30th, but for those iPhone 4 purchasers that still haven't ordered one and are still having problems, you can contact Apple Care and request one. So it's ending, at least the automatic issuance of a case portion of this program. If you decide you want one, you can still order one.

Mophie for iPhone 4

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:38 PM

"Dieter's at the IFA show in Berlin, Germany and he's scored us a first look at mophie's upcoming juice pack air for iPhone 4. It's got soft touch paint and they claim ZERO signal degredation because the entire PCB board is on the bottom, so there are no electronics around the antenna."

I've been waiting for this to come out! I have one that I used on my 3GS with great results, and this one looks even better. It will sell for $79.95 USD and will be available within the week. They will also have it available in black red, white and green. From the pics it appears to add quite a bit of thickness to the iPhone 4 however, so I'll have to get a look in person at the real thing once it comes out (This one was prototype apparently.).

iPhone 4 Owner Beats Samsung Galaxy S Owner in Texting Contest

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

"This just in from the "bragging about marginally useful skills" department. This week, Salford, UK-based Melissa Thompson set a "texting speed record" on her Samsung Galaxy S by typing two sentences in 25.94 seconds. The sentences in question were: "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human." Note that Melissa used a Swype keyboard on the Galaxy."

That record stood for a couple hours, and then <cue the music> came Brian and his iPhone 4. Who knows if it's official, and I really am not going to lose sleep wondering about it. However, congrats on the record Brian, I'm sure the skill will come in handy someday when you, um... Well, I'm sure that it will come in handy and let's leave it at that.
