iCards Updated With New Designs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:19 AM

"Apple has updated its Cards iOS app with several new card designs."

I love this free app. It makes it so easy to send a card without having to go to the store and buy one, and they are customized with a photo. Now they have added Mother's Day and Get Well card designs to go along with the other categories.

Sonoma Wire Works' Guitar Jack

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"There are no shortage of gadgets out there that allow you connect your guitar to your iPhone, putting the power of The App Store at your guitar's disposal."

I'm no musician, but I'm sure there are some out there reading this, so if you have been looking for that perfect gadget to connect your guitar to your iPhone, Cult of Mac says this is the one to get. It's not cheap at $150.00 USD, but from the article it sounds like a sturdy accessory. You can find out about the jack at the Sonoma site here.

Create and Update Your Notes Via Siri

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

"Apple's virtual personal assistant, Siri, can do all sorts of wonderful things, including creating and updating Notes right on your iPhone."

It's as simple as telling Siri to "create a new note" or "make a new note." If you add the name of the note at the end of the request, such as "create a new note grocery list" it will then title the note. I haven't tried this out, but supposedly updating the note isn't as easy as creating it. I'm guessing you just say "add grapes to grocery note" or something like that. What are your thoughts, ever tried creating notes or reminders via Siri? If so, any helpful hints?

I Do Not Want Any Device This Bad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 AM

"How badly do you want an iPhone and iPad? A Chinese teen sold his kidney to set his hands on the devices...and authorities have charged five people."

Incredible. And stupid.

Major League Baseball is Here, Are You Ready?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 PM

"The bases are loaded, the pitchers are on the mounds, and Major League Baseball season has begun! So now it's time to take me - and my iPhone - out to the ballgame!"

I think it's pretty hard to beat the MLB At Bat Universal App for following MLB on your portable device, but the article does offer a couple alternatives in case you are in fantasy leagues. New this year though, also from MLB, is an app for your iPhone called At The Ballpark. This one is cool as it helps you navigate the ballpark you happen to be at, as well as several check in options and rewards.

"Apple CEO Tim Cook's office might become a little less busy this weekend, as AT&T has just announced that it will begin to offer iPhone unlocks to month-to-month customers starting this Sunday, April 8."

About time. So once unlocked, you can use your iPhone on any compatible network, anywhere in the world, as long as you have the right SIM card and it's on GSM.

Tax Apps to Help You Beat the Deadline

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

"With only a few weeks before taxes are due -- the federal deadline is on April 17, and many states have followed suit -- plenty of Americans are scrambling to file before the clock ticks away."

There are a few that I use that aren't on this list. One is Taxcaster from TurboTax, a universal app to help you estimate how much your tax (or refund for that matter) will be. Another is MyTaxRefund, an app to track your refund. Hopefully you won't need the third one from TurboTax, it's called Easy Extension. I think the name lets you know what that app is all about.

The Stand for iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

"Newly formed startup company Outlaaw has recently launched its first product on the crowdfunding site "The Stand" is a sound-enhancing iPhone dock designed from a solid block of cylindrical aluminum."

This is a Kickstarter project and it is just over halfway funded. I'm hoping they get the money for this as it really is a cool little accessory. The only problem with things like this, for me, is that with an iPhone 5 coming out this year, I don't want to get stuck with a $50.00 USD piece of aluminum that is incompatible. What are your thoughts?

Tips to Improve Your iOS Device Battery Life

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

"Good battery life is essential for a mobile device to succeed in the post-PC era, and Apple's iOS devices continue to pack upgraded internals and improved battery technology into every product iteration."

But even with all of this improvement, advances in what you can do with your iOS device do cause the drain game to happen. So if you are tired of seeing that red lined battery image as pictured above, then this article has some good tips for you. I knew about brightness levels and the effect on battery life, but there were several other tips I was unaware of, such as in location services. So check it out and learn how to master your battery!

Some Tips for Better iPhone Photos

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:00 PM

"In the five years since the iPhone Photography Awards (IPPA) launched, the iPhone camera has gone from disappointing to out-snapping Nikon as the most popular camera on Flickr."

Awesome photo. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that one of the most common rookie mistakes is "Gratuitous use of iPhone processing apps." There are so many it's hard to figure out the best one for you, and to learn that the iPhone camera is just fine for capturing those "in the moment" photographs, I won't worry about finding that perfect app. I just need to practice so I can enter this contest! What are your thoughts? Have you found an app that really does make you a better iPhone photographer?

MLB At Bat 12 Now Available, Baseball Must Be Close!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:30 PM

"Another sign that baseball season is just around the corner -- MLB At Bat 12 is now available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad."

You can get the free version here, if all you want are scores. If you want all the other options such as live game feeds and video, then you can either pay (from within the app) $2.99 USD per month or spring for the whole year for $14.99 USD. The best thing about this app is that it is now universal so you don't get double dinged to get it on your iPad and iPhone. Oh, if you want it free you can also subscribe to and they throw this nifty app in with your subscription.

Boost Speaker is Magic!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:30 PM

"Zagg's new Boost speaker, sold under the iFrogz brand, appears to amplify music using nothing but magic."

It certainly seems like magic, since all you have to do is lay your iPhone down on top of it and the sound "magically" comes through the device speakers, thus amplifying your music! It appears there is a tiny mic according to one article I read, that picks up the sound from your iPhone speakers. However they do it, it seems to work pretty well. You can order yours, for roughly $40 USD, right here.

Turn Your Instagram Collection Into a Poster

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

"Enjoy uploading pictures to the Internet via Instagram? Now you can turn your collection into a poster."

Sounds pretty easy too, since all you have to do is select the ones you want and the online retailer Firebox will build you a poster from the selections. The width is set at 24 inches, but you can go as long as 5 feet. Another option listed is, but with them you can also get physical photos printed along with stickers and minibooks.

The Best Apps For Jailbroken iPhones

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

"Now that you've successfully jailbroken your iPhone 4S running iOS 5, what do you install? Whether you're new to Cydia or a jailbreak veteran, we've gathered a list of the best jailbreak apps available for Apple's latest smartphone."

I don't jailbreak anything, but some of you might, so in case you are interested here is a list of the best apps out there for your iPhone. I do wish some of these apps would make it to the regular app store, such as Winterboard that lets you create themes for your iPhone screen. Oh well, someday perhaps. In the meantime, it's just for you jail breakers!

iPhone Case and Insurance, What a Deal!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 AM

"Being the resident "extreme" iPhone case enthusiast (and also the klutz who drops his phone most often), I was intrigued by the new cellhelmet Kickstarter project."

This is a great idea, and it is made even better because the cases look good. I hate cases that don't have the opening for the Apple logo on the back, it just messes up the aesthetics for me. And since this one is also form fitted and has the extra cushioning on the edges and corners, it looks like it would really do the job. However, we won't know if we can even purchase one of these until March 11th when the Kickstarter project is either funded or cancelled. So if you are like me and think having a case that includes insurance for breaking your iPhone thrown in (you do have to pay what amounts to a $50.00 USD deductible if you do break your iPhone in the case), then perhaps you should head over to the Kickstarter page and put your money down.

An Extra Layer of Glass for Your iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"Instead of opting for a flimsy plastic screen protector, try protecting your iPhone's screen with another thin layer of tough glass."

If I didn't already have one backup of Invisishield on my shelf, and planning on buying the iPhone 5 this summer, I think I'd give this a go. Basically its a thin shield of glass to offer even more protection for your iPhone screen. At roughly $28.00 USD it isn't cheap, but if it works then well worth it I'd say. You can find out more about this at Spigen.

Use Your iPhone as Your Remote

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:00 AM

"One of the best accessories you can purchase for your new iPhone is a little device that allows you to control your television and other audio/visual gear from your smartphone. It means you don't have to search around for that lost remote, get up to change the channel, or keep replacing the batteries in all the remotes already littering your home."

On the surface, it sounds like a great idea and I'm anxious to try this since it is available now from Apple for $70.00 USD. However, after reading this article I may give it a bit before ordering until they work out the bugs. Then again, since Apple is great letting you return your purchases I might try it anyway and return it if it doesn't work out.

Secure Your iPhone With The Mounty

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"If you're a cyclist then you know it's Sophie's choice when it comes to securing your iPhone."

From the pics over at the Kickstarter page, you can also secure your smartphone (any smartphone it appears although this is optimized for the iPhone 4/4S) to stroller, motorcycle or shopping cart. They aren't fully funded yet but you have the rest of February to make a decision before it either gets funded or closed down. Nice idea for anyone that is active on two wheels, and hopefully it would work for an iPhone 5 too.

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

"Xappr is a gun accessory for your iPhone that'll instantly appeal to everyone from fans of the original Duck Hunt on Ninteno to the latest Halo or Call of Duty FPS shooters."

Awesome concept for smartphone games that are first person shooters. You can preorder yours here, and they are expected to run about $30.00 USD when it is launched this summer. Yes, this is made to use with any smartphone, be it iPhone, Android or Windows Phones.
