Donate to Japanese Relief Fund Via iTunes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 07:34 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/03/13/appl...ief-fund-via-i/

"Following the disaster caused by the magnitude 8.9 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Apple has posted a donation page on iTunes where you can use your iTunes account to make a secure donation to the American Red Cross and its Japanese relief fund."

100% of the donations made through this link to iTunes go to the relief fund so no off the top percentages are taken by Apple. Or if you prefer, you can go to this site and see other ways to donate.

Update Your iTunes to 10.2.1

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/54936/apple-...-java-for-os-x/

"Just days after releasing iTunes 10.2 with iOS Home Sharing support, Apple has released iTunes 10.2.1, which we presume is simply a bug fix update."

Just a reminder that this update came out as well as one for Java for 10.5 and 10.6. Both are related to security issues and you can get more at the Apple page.

Southwest Teams Up With Apple for InAirtainment

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti..._inairtainment/

"Southwest Airlines has teamed up with Apple to offer music and video entertainment options for its customers through its new InAirtainment Web site. The site features iTunes Store content, and even offers 20 free songs from Southwest says are 'artists about to fly.'"

You can access the site via Southwest Airlines webpage using any connection. I'm in agreement with the article though, in that Southwest would probably like you to use their WiFi for the revenue. They will have music, video and movies as well as some deals that only Southwest customers will be able to take advantage of, and the service is live now.

Apple Posts Grammy Info on iTunes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:54 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...r_itunes_store/

"The 53rd annual GRAMMY Awards ceremony was hosted on Sunday, and Apple rounded up the nominees and winners at the iTunes Store. The list includes the album of the year, record of the year, song of the year, and more."

Notable is that Train won a Grammy for the iTunes EP Session album, the first time original content recorded for iTunes specifically has own a Grammy. The song is Hey, Soul Sister. The page is located here on iTunes if you are curious about the winners and didn't watch it last night.

AMEX Cardholders, Here is a Deal for You

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.ipodnn.com/articles/11/0...res.march.15th/

"As part of the general hoopla surrounding the formal launch of the Verizon iPhone today, American Express is offering all of their cardmembers an "instant rebate" on up to five songs from the iTunes Store starting today. The promotion runs through March 15th, and cardholders can choose any song they want without restrictions."

Just register your card at the promotion page, then you get five songs from iTunes. You have to buy them initially but then you automatically get the cost refunded. Not a bad deal if you have an AMEX.

Mobile iTunes Now Has Genius Recommendations

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:50 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2011/02/...ecommendations/

"Apple's mobile version of the iTunes Store has recently received Genius recommendations. Both the iPhone and iPad versions of the iTunes Store now allow users to view recommendations."

I seldom use Genius recommendations, although I have found some gems in the past by using it. It just isn't something I really think about doing when I go to iTunes, so perhaps I'm not using it to it's potential. Now that it is on the mobile versions maybe I'll use it more. How about you, does the Genius enhance your usage or is it something that you don't even bother using?

iTunes Distribution for Oscar-Nominated Films

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Talk" @ 12:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...r_nominees.html

"Movie studios are seeking to distribute their award nominated films to Academy and Screen Actors Guild voters using Apple's iTunes rather than conventional DVDs, in hopes of limiting piracy of the pre-release films."

How can movie studios distribute Oscar nominated films to the nearly 100,000 members of the screen actors guild, without (as in the past) unauthorized copies appearing everywhere? Rather than burning DVDs, adding watermarks, chasing down illegal copies, etc; the latest plan is to distribute them via iTunes, using restricted rental codes, with the rental having a limited lifespan. Time is up, this copy self-destructs. While still not fool-proof, it is a step forward, as seen through the eyes of the studios and SAG. Will there ever be a real solution for this problem?

Apple Posts Lists for Top Apps, Free and Paid

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:00 AM

http://techcrunch.com/2011/01/19/ip...-app-downloads/

"If you had to guess what the top downloaded iOS app of all time was, what would you say? You'll probably get it. It's an obvious one. It's Facebook. Number two is fairly easy too: Pandora. But did you know that number three is the Google Mobile App? I wonder what Apple thinks of that?"

Not surprising that the Facebook app is the number one free app, on the iphone anyway. The number one free app on the iPad is Pandora. How about the paid apps? For the iPhone and iPad, Doodle Jump and SoundHound top the lists respectively. The list is found within iTunes and you can get there here if you want to see what else made the lists.

Not So Dark on This Side of the Moon, Now That Pink Floyd is Back on iTunes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:05 PM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...tribution_deal/

"EMI this week patched up their differences with venerable rock band Pink Floyd, announcing a new five-year distribution deal that will keep the group's music on iTunes in album form and as individual tracks. The contract covers Pink Floyd's 14 studio and three live albums, and it ends the legal acrimony that arose last year when the band sued EMI."

Early in 2010, Pink Floyd was gone from iTunes (as well as other legit distribution outlets) due to an expired EMI deal and lawsuit. Now you can once again purchase Pink Floyd on iTunes so they must have sorted it all out. You can also pick and choose the tracks instead of having to buy entire albums, a bonus for some, but if I remember correctly from my Pink Floyd days, you really should listen to the album from beginning to end for the full effect of their genius. At least that is how I remember it, feel free to go your own way.

Remote App From Apple Updated to Add Streaming Support

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:00 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5716134/stream-i.../full+(Gizmodo)

"The iOS remote app just got updated! One great feature is letting you take content from iTunes, on your computer, and streaming it to your Apple TV over AirPlay. Also, controlling iTunes Movies/TV directly on your Mac."

It's a free universal app, and they have also included Internet Radio support with version 2.1. You can also control iTunes on your computer from any iOS device to play TV shows, movies and other iTunes content, and this works with all iOS hardware running v3.1.2 or later.

$50 iTunes Gift Card for $40

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/43313/apple-...e+Intelligence)

"Best Buy offers the Apple iTunes $50 holiday Gift Card for $40 with free shipping. That's $10 off and tied with Best Buy's Black Friday deal for one of the best deals we've seen on iTunes gift cards this year. Ships in time for Christmas."

Not a bad deal if you need a last minute stocking stuffer. It appears from the product page at Best Buy though, you can only do in-store pickup, thus no wonder it will be available for Christmas! Still it is worth it if you have a Best Buy in your area and the online ordering allows you to choose your store.

iTunes Still Dominates Digital Music

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/npd-apple-...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"Apple's iTunes continues to dominate digital music sales, gaining three percent compared to last year and comprising 66 percent of the market, according to news reports. Amazon, Apple's closest competitor, with just 13 percent of digital music purchases, tied Walmart, which relinquished first place to the Cupertino, Calif. firm in 2008."

Amazon has been trying to undercut iTunes, offering pretty steep discounts on their music but all it has gained them is about 2%, moving from 11% to 13%. Still a gain is a gain, however is the loss they are taking worth it? I admit I will shop at Amazon.com periodically and just use their handy MP3 Downloader to get the music into my iTunes library, but for the most part I will just stick with iTunes. It reminds me of the punchline in that old joke where the guy is selling sandwiches at a 25 cent loss: "Yea, but I make it up in volume."

12 Days of Christmas Promotion, UK and Europe Only Apparently

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/42100/itunes...e+Intelligence)

"Apple has announced their annual 12 days of Christmas promotion will be held from December 26 until January 6th. The promotion offers a selection of songs, movies, music videos, apps, books, and TV shows that will be free during certain days of the 12 day promo. Each selection for the corresponding day will only be available for those 24 hours."

You can sign up here, and each offering will only be available for 24 hours. Once you sign up Apple will send you a daily email alert as a reminder. Or you can download the free "12 Days of Christmas" app from iTunes to keep you on track. Wonder if the US is going to get something similar?

Share Your Playlist With Ping

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/ping-intro...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"Ping just got a micron less useless on Friday with the addition of new functionality: the ability to make social playlists and share them with friends."

I still haven't done much with Ping, and to be honest I probably won't until it has Facebook integration. That is where most of my friends are so it is pretty worthless to me without the ability to share on Facebook. I like this feature however. How about you, anyone finding Ping useful?

Best of iTunes 2010 Lists

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:30 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/12/09/appl...d-apps-of-2010/

"As we reported earlier, Apple has highlighted the best of iTunes from 2010. Their showcase reveals their picks for the best movies, music, podcasts, audio books and apps for the last 12 months."

The iTunes Rewind 2020 broke down the app section into Top Grossing, Top Free and Top Paid for iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch, while also creating an iTunes specific list section with the top movies, songs, albums, etc. So, how many of the selections do you own?

UK iTunes gets HD Options

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/12/08...ie-sales-in-uk/

"Several MacRumors readers have written in to report that Apple has begun offering high-definition movies for sale in its UK iTunes Store. A very limited library of titles appears to be available at the moment with, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse appearing to be the highest-profile release available for purchase in HD."

The normally £9.99 SD films are going for £12.99 if you want it in HD, and the normally £6.99 SD films are selling for £7.99 in HD. They used to only offer renting as an option, so it's good they are expanding the options for those in the UK. It sure seems to take a lot longer than it does in the US, and since I'm not all that familiar with licensing I'm just assuming that is the case? What are your thoughts?

Apple Sending Out Free iTunes Rentals

Posted by Joe Johaneman in "Apple News" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/40683/itunes...e-movie-rentals

"Apple today started sending out free iTunes movie rental codes to many iTunes users. This seems to be random and we have no idea why they're doing this."

We haven't gotten one here, but it seems some people are getting emails with codes for free iTunes rentals. Apple hasn't given a reason for this, but I suspect that it is meant to remind customers that you can rent movies from iTunes. Personally, I've never rented a movie from Apple, and I'm sure there are plenty of people who haven't either. Maybe this will convince people to give it a try. I just wonder if Apple is rolling these out to everyone, or if they're basing it on recent sales of AppleTVs or iPads. Perhaps it is entirely random. What do you think?

Beatles a Success on iTunes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:45 AM

http://www.edibleapple.com/its-a-hi...+(Edible+Apple)

"It may not have been a day we'll never forget, but the addition of the Beatles music catalog to iTunes was no small thing. Backed by a ubiquitous marketing campaign that included billboards and prominent TV spots, sales of Beatles music on iTunes have been booming."

I was one of the people that didn't think this was that big of a deal, I was just happy that we wouldn't have to hear about any more rumors of The Beatles coming to iTunes. Apparently it was a big deal to a lot of people, since they have sold 450,000 albums and over 2 million songs worldwide since the group debuted on iTunes on November 16th of this year. In fact, Abbey Road is still a top 25 album as of this morning. I guess they do know what they are doing over at Apple.

Bump App Updated to Share Music

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/35714/iphone...e+Intelligence)

"iPhone app Bump is already pretty popular as a way to share contact information (like an electronic business card), but now the app lets you share music too."

The video doesn't show the music aspect, but you can now share songs from iTunes via the same method. It isn't the whole song obviously, just a teaser YouTube clip so you can preview it. This adds to the growing list of things on Bump that you can share, since you can transfer funds with PayPal, share photos and set up connections to Facebook among other social networks using the same process.
