And Now Some News on the Legal Front...

"Bloomberg reports that Steve Jobs will have to testify in an anti-trust suite which alleges that Apple operated a music-downloading monopoly."

According to the story, this involves "Apple's blockage of RealNetwork's Harmony software which briefly allowed users to use RealNetworks' music in iTunes and on iPods. A few days after Harmony was released, Apple updated its own software to block Harmony from working in Apple's Music ecosystem." Seems like this would go nowhere but I can understand Job's getting a subpoena to testify if he had specific information related to the case. In other legal news, Apple is suing over the use of the term "App Store," and Microsoft is protesting the awarding of the trademark. It does seem like a generic term to me, unless of course you put the Apple in front of it. What are your thoughts?

Jobs Finally Gets Permission and Levels Mansion

"The destruction of the Jackling house on Mountain Home Road in Woodside began Monday, Feb. 14, and is expected to last about two weeks, according to town officials."

Steve Jobs bought this mansion in 1984, lived in it a few years then rented it out. After it became vacant in 2000 he sought permission to raze it and build something else on the site but ran into several roadblocks and lawsuits due to the historical significance of the house. It appears all that was sorted out, and now the mansion shown above is a pile of rubble, after certain things were salvaged from the property for their historical significance such as the flagpole, the copper mailbox, roof tiling and other things. It does look to me like a pretty cool house, but perhaps to Jobs it just wasn't worth fixing up. Regardless, now he can build what he wants on the property.

"It's no secret that Steve Jobs isn't a fan of the physical CD, preferring of course that his customers buy their music in his iTunes store. But what length is he willing to go to get rid of the CD for good?"

Robot Chicken comes up with some winners every now and then, just like this one. I love the comment at the end by the passerby: "I think it's a pager."

Jobs Takes Leave, Stocks React

"Steve Jobs today informed Apple employees that he has been granted a medical leave of absence from the board of directors."

This is THE news in the Apple world today, as Steve Jobs takes a leave to focus on unknown health issues. For now, Tim Cook appears to be running the show, and if you need a primer on just who Tim Cook is, the WSJ has posted a "Who is Tim?" story that fills that need. The stock market in the US is closed for the Martin Luther King Jr holiday, but foreign stock markets were open and reacted negatively to the news, as shares of Apple in Europe dropped between 6 and 8%.

Steve Jobs CEO of the Decade According to MarketWatch

"Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Tuesday was named MarketWatch's CEO of the Decade for bringing Apple out of the technology doldrums and sparking a strong of hits that have made it one of the most successful companies in the world."

You can read the MarketWatch story here, but basically they felt that Steve Jobs performance merited this award, and I can't say I disagree. All you have to do is track the stock price over the last decade and see how Apple has performed with him at the helm (from the chart they use it has gained over 4,000 %).

Scoopertino Has Your Halloween Costume

"The guys at Scoopertino have the exclusive details on Apple's "next big product launch." According to them, "Apple is making a multimillion-dollar bet" that you'll want it, too. Apple is set to release their first ever clothing line, dubbed "iWear," which lets you dress exactly like Steve Jobs. The iWear line will consist of a mock black turtleneck, jeans, gray New Balance 991 sneakers, and a pair of non-prescription Steve Jobs-style glasses. Apple will push the new iWear clothing line with the ad campaign slogan: 'Be Like Steve.'"

Sculley on Jobs, and Apple

"In 1983, Steve Jobs wooed Pepsi executive John Sculley to Apple with one of the most famous lines in business: 'Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want a chance to change the world?'"

Little did Steve know that this would be his undoing. It's interesting to me was that Steve Jobs has held on to his major priority from the early days, that computers had to be designed with the user in mind. Something now we kind of take for granted, but back in the day it was unheard of. No small surprise that he also was a perfectionist back then too, and the quote from Sculley was spot on: "The thing that separated Steve Jobs from other people like Bill Gates - Bill was brilliant too - but Bill was never interested in great taste. He was always interested in being able to dominate a market. He would put out whatever he had to put out there to own that space. Steve would never do that. Steve believed in perfection." Well worth the read in my opinion so check it out and let us know your thoughts on it!

And Today's Bit of Philanthropy...

"After over 68 days of hell, the Chilean miners that are being rescued today will have a nice surprise when they finally see the light of the day again. LeFigaro has just announced that each of them will be getting a brand new iPod to cheer them up, courtesy of our venerable leader Steve Jobs himself. Yes, they come as a personal gift."

Nice gesture, but I agree with the author, hope it is at least an iPod Touch. Wonder if they even know who Steve Jobs is? Or care at this point, I'm sure they are just glad to be out of that hell hole!

"We here at TUAW fortunately passed on reporting the obviously fake story of Steve Jobs being denied access to Japan because of ninja stars he was reportedly carrying in his luggage. But we did like this fake Apple page from the folks at Scoopertino, featuring the iPod ninja, a brand new throwing star-shaped iPod. If Steve was carrying around ninja stars (and he wasn't), maybe he was just testing a more weaponized iPod prototype."

Nice! This would have been perfect for Steve Jobs when he got himself into this situation.

Steve Jobs to Appear at D8 Conference This Year

"All Things Digital reports that Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, will appear on stage at this years D8 Conference. This conference is hosted by the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital and typically interviews well-known executives from major technology and media companies."

And with him will be, among others, Microsoft's Steve Balmer and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg. The conference is set for June 1st, and you can find out more info at the All Things Digital site. If you can't wait, watch Steve above at the 2007 D5 Conference.

Read All About Steve, and Something Called the Mac

"At age 28, Steven P. Jobs, Chairman of Apple Computer, was on top of his game-rich, famous, spoiled, and seemingly unrestrained by the usual social mores. He had the chiseled face, jutting jaw and thick black hair of a typical matinee idol."

Before you worry too much, the rest of the story doesn't read like it's coming from an Apple fan boy meeting Steve Jobs for the first time. I found the stories interesting, especially coming from Dave Bunnell, co-creator of Macworld, and he has ten installments about what it was like in the early days before, during and after Macworld (the magazine) was born.

"Tomorrow Today the California State Senate's health committee will review a bill that, if passed, will make California the first state in the nation to create a live donor registry for kidney transplants. The bill will also require California drivers to decide whether they want to be organ donors when they renew their drivers' licenses."


Always good to hear about the positive uses of one's celebrity such as this case with Steve Jobs, Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger. What is annoying to me, however, is that it took them to push this idea through the political process. An idea such as this, that is a benefit with no downside that I can see, and it was stalled? Perhaps it was one of those bills they always expected to get to once they finished up some other agenda items. Who knows, just glad it is moving through the process now.

Are You Nuts?

"Apple chief executive Steve Jobs this week continued to showcase his own flavor of public relations management, asking one supporter if he was insane to suggest the company had mislead international customers with regard to iPad availability."

It could be they ran out of parts, or they wanted to delay to work on the Wi-Fi issue, or it could be planned. Who knows. But I always enjoy reading about this email responses that he sends out, and he doesn't mince words. Not the best for PR I suppose but at least you know where he stands.

No iPhone 4.0 for 1st Gen iPhone Owners

"This could be bad news for owners of the original iPhone: Steve Jobs told an inquiring customer over e-mail that the first-gen iPhone (the EDGE-only model with the aluminum back) will not be compatible with iPhone OS 4, Engadget reports."

What are your thoughts? Is this too soon to cut off updates for a product that has been out for three years? I'm of the opinion that it isn't based on the advances to the hardware itself.

"Steve Jobs has responded to a couple more emails -- this time questions about the new iPhone developer rules, which prevent anyone from using Adobe's Flash on the iPhone (and have infuriated many developers and Adobe employees.)"

Greg at Tao Effect has been communicating with Steve Jobs over the Flash issue, you can read them all here. Seems like we see more and more stories about Jobs tossing out a reply to an email from the public.
