No Need to Panic! More About the Flashback Trojan

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 03:00 AM

"We've entered a new era in Mac security, but there's no need to panic."

With an estimated 500,000 Macs infected, it appears this is the most widespread virus ever for the Mac. But Apple has been putting out the patches and this article will give you a good run through on what to do in order to protect yourself. Or, if you are already infected, it will help you clean up your system.

Last Day for the Mac Spring 2012 Bundle From Cult of Mac

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:55 AM

"A truly awesome deal like this only comes around every once in a while...but a truly awesome deal like this also won't last for very long either! In fact, the Mac Spring 2012 Bundle is around for less than 24 hours, so you'd better grab these amazing 10 Mac apps while you can!"

I picked up one of these myself, mainly for four programs: MoneyWell, Circus Ponies Notebook, Home Inventory and GarageSale. All the other ones are just a bonus. Great deal for $49.99 but it ends today. You can check it out here.

iWork Ending, iCloud Now The Focus

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 03:00 AM

"It seems Apple has come to find that iCloud is the better solution to its service before the latter even had the chance to come out of beta, i, and will be discontinuing it on July 31st (a month after the company is set to also discontinue MobileMe in favor of iCloud)."

I never really used this much anyway, so I won't miss it. The key here is to make sure that if you did or are using it, that you get your files moved by July 31, 2012.

25 Billion Apps...and Counting!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:26 AM

"Apple has officially announced that the iTunes App Store has hit 25 billion downloads, and that the person who downloaded the 25 billionth app, Where's My Water? Free, was Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China. He'll be getting a $10,000 iTunes gift card."

Quit the milestone indeed! Hard to comprehend that this many apps have been downloaded in such a short time, just 2.5 years or so to be exact. Congrats to Chunli Fu of China for being the lucky one!

Use Prey to Track Your Stolen Laptop...Free!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

"Our laptops are valuable devices. They connect us. Inform and entertain us. And yes, sometimes distract us. Dealing with a lost or stolen laptop is not typically a thought we ponder in our busy lives."

This is an open source project, so you don't pay a dime for it. The reviewer gives it good marks and has some tips in case you do install it, so it is definitely worth the read if you want to provide some extra protection for your laptop. If you keep everything on yours like I do mine, any help is appreciated, especially when it's free! And you can always add features via their Pro Plans if the free version isn't to your liking. You can find out more at the Prey Project.

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:37 PM

That didn't take long, with Apple releasing an update to fix the break caused by their Security Update 2012-001 v1.1. You can get the update via Software Update or by going to the Apple downloads page.

"As part of the Mac OS X 10.7.3 update released earlier this week, Security Update 2012-001 for Snow Leopard broke compatibility with several Rosetta Power PC programs."

Apple is working on an fix, but apparently the update (here are the release notes at Apple) broke several programs that used to run on PowerPC makes, such as Quicken. There are some fixes via 9to5Mac until Apple releases the update.

iTunes U Generates Excitement

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:30 AM

"There's a pretty high level of excitement flowing from Thursday's arrival of the iTunes U app."

I think the education section of iTunes was already pretty popular, but now the interest that it has generated in colleges is bound to increase that popularity. More excitement means more content, and from a greater variety of sources. Even community colleges are getting in on the act. What are your thoughts on this new app from Apple?

Want to Run Windows on a Mac? You Have Several Options

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 01:30 PM

"Despite the Mac's recent gains in market share, Windows is still the dominant operating system, especially in businesses. That means there may be times when you need to run the Microsoft OS: perhaps there's an application your company uses that's only available for Windows, or you're a web developer and you need to test your sites in a true native Windows web browser."

Well, whatever your reasons for running Windows on your Mac, you have many choices. Probably more than you realized, at least that was the feeling I got when I read this article on how to set up your Mac to run Windows. Especially helpful were the comparisons on performance based on which option, which helps immensely when trying to decide which road to travel. What are your thoughts on running Windows on a Mac, and which option(s) do you use?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:46 AM

"Get iCloud up and running on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC. And learn how to set up Find My iPhone. All it takes is a few easy steps."

Three easy steps, according to this page from Apple on how to set up your PC for iCloud. And they said it was just for Macs. Silly critics.

Snapseed, an iOS App of the Year 2011, Now Available in Mac App Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:00 AM

"Snapseed for iOS is among the indispensable image editing apps for avid photographers on the go. With a vast selection of professional-grade filters and cool effects, its attractive user interface and editing tools such as Grunge, Vintage and Drama, no wonder Apple named Snapseed the iPad App of the Year 2011 in its annual iTunes Rewind 2011 selection."

This is a pretty slick app, and available now for $19.99 USD in the Mac App Store [affiliate link]. I have the version for the iPad (available here for $4.99 USD) and found it to be pretty slick. Now you can also get it for your Mac. I prefer doing this sort of thing on my Mac anyway, even though I'm certainly no pro at it, and with this app you don't have to be. What are your thoughts on editing photos on your Mac versus iPad? Which programs have you found useful on either or both?

Click on the Facebook icon, for example, and you go to a list of applications you have given permission to access your information.
