WWDC Videos for Developers Now Available

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...=rss_everything

"Session videos from Apple's 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference made it to the company's website on Wednesday, giving attendees for last week's event a chance to re-watch the sessions they attended, and giving developers that couldn't attend the opportunity to learn more about coding for the Mac, iPhone and iPad."

You can get the videos direct from Apple here, or download from iTunes U here.

Bento 4 Released for iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:23 AM

http://www.technologytell.com/apple...etell+Appletell

"Bento has always been a pretty good app for the iPad, providing database functionality that's simplified from its FileMaker roots, but still manages to provide tools you'd otherwise need a dozen separate apps to achive. Bento 4 for iPad has now been updated with a streamlined interface, more tools, and access to the robust Bento Template Exchange."

The update includes 40 retina display ready themes, customizable templates if you don't want to use one of the hundreds of free templates you can link to and the additional view options of table, split and full screen. And to top it off all versions are on sale until the end of the month. Through July 31st you can get the iPad version for $4.99 USD and Bento version 4.1 for the Mac for $29.99 USD.

Time Magazine Titles Now Available in Newsstand

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:15 PM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...=rss_everything

"Time has apparently worked out its differences with Apple because the publisher began offering its magazine titles through the iPad's Newsstand app on Thursday."

The more that join, the better I say. Glad they worked out their differences.

Retina Display Featured in MacBook Pro Commercial

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 11:47 AM

http://osxdaily.com/2012/06/13/reti...ly+(OS+X+Daily)

"Apple has started to run commercials for the Mac line again, with the newest ad focused on the speedy new MacBook Pro with Retina display."

Love the ghostly hands moving around on the keyboard.

Create a Photo Collage With Pages

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.maclife.com/article/howt...e_photo_collage

"We all know how easy it is to share photos online with iPhoto or via iCloud's Photo Stream, but what about when you want to get back to the old school and print them? iPhoto offers some great photo printing options and you can even create your own printed photo books, but don't overlook Pages because it also has a few tricks up its sleeve."

Framing a photo collage is a great gift. In fact, we made up some over the last couple weeks leading up to my daughter's graduation as thank you gifts for various people that have helped her in various phases in her life. I just wish I had known about all the tricks in this article and I could have saved myself from buying an app called Turbo Collage. It worked great, but I already have Pages so could have used that instead! Live and learn I guess, right?

WWDC 2012 Apple Design Winners

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

http://osxdaily.com/2012/06/12/appl...ly+(OS+X+Daily)

"The annual Apple Design Awards were held at WWDC 2012, with the winners representing a great batch of apps for iPhone, iPad, and Mac OS X."

I have a couple of these, the National Parks (which is awesome!) and the Paper app, which I don't use at all. If you want more info on the winners, head over to the Apple Design site.

Apple Pulls iMessages Beta

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ntain_lion.html

"With OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion set to launch in July, Apple has pulled the link to download its Messages for Mac beta."

I use this program a lot, it works very well. Too bad they pulled it but I can see why if it's in the update to Mountain Lion. What are your thoughts on iMessages? Do you use it?

Camera Dot From Facebook

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/06/12/face...-is-now-camera/

"Remember the Camera app? No, not the one that ships with every iPhone, but the app that Facebook announced on May 24, 2012."

It's out now in the iTunes store, but it's called "Camera Dot." Seems like a silly name to me, and to find it in the iTunes App store you need to do a search for "Facebook Camera" to find it. Or you can just click here.

Amazon Cloud Player For iOS

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.imore.com/2012/06/12/ama...one-ipod-touch/

"Amazon's Cloud Player launched last year with iPhone compatibility conspicuously absent, but as of today, the iOS app has found its way to the smaller screen, giving users the ability to access their music stored in the cloud."

No longer do you have to rely on the mobile site for this, which is a good thing since that was pretty basic. That being said, I pretty much stick with iTunes and use their iTunes Match service for $25.00 USD per year, keeps it simple that way. If i want to get some deals from Amazon, I buy them there and just import into my iTunes. How do you handle music and your library?

Thunderbolt Update Might Cause You a Problem

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:17 PM

http://www.cultofmac.com/173223/app...el-panics-more/

"A Software Update for Thunderbolt was just one of many Apple releases that went public yesterday, but unlike the rest, you should be in no hurry to pick this one up. Many users who have installed the update are reporting that it is causing boot failures and more on their Mac."

Well, if you haven't downloaded it, you might want to hold off until they fix this problem.

Aperture, iPhoto and Final Cut Pro Updated for Retina Display

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:30 PM

http://9to5mac.com/2012/06/11/apple...e+Intelligence)

"Several of Apple's popular Mac apps received updates today following the WWDC keynote, many of which help the apps take full advantage of the new 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro's display."

Aperture got most of the update love, but they didn't leave out iPhoto or Final Cut Pro so those two programs could also take advantage of the Retina Display on the new Macbook Pros.

An Overview of iOS 6

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:51 PM

http://www.macworld.com/article/116...eils_ios_6.html

"Apple on Monday took the wraps off iOS 6, the next version of the operating system that powers the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch."

Great overview of iOS 6 by Macworld. I'm really liking the Passbook feature, among other things. What are your thoughts on this latest update to iOS that will be released this fall?

Office 2 HD Updated to Allow Track Changes. Awesome!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/172013/off...s-and-comments/

"Many of you will have read the above headline and thought "Meh. Whatever." And yet here you are, still reading. Well, if you got this far, here's the reward. Office2 HD, the MS Office-compatible suite for the iPad, has just gotten support for Track Changes and comments."

This is actually great news! You can't do it on Pages, and I could have used this feature last week when we were proposing changes to our contract. It's available now for $7.99 USD in the iTunes store, so tell me why am I waiting for Microsoft to come out with Office for iPad? I guess I'm not!

Best iOS Calendar Alternative, Agenda, Updated

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.imore.com/2012/06/05/age...ne-ipad-review/

"Agenda is a beautiful alternative to the iPhone and iPad's built-in Calendar app by the great folks at App Savvy."

This really is a great calendar app, much better than the calendar app that comes with the iPhone. I don't switch out of using too many of the apps that come with iOS, but for calendar I made the switch to Agenda and haven't looked back. It's very clean looking and makes finding information easy. But don't take my word for it, you can read the iMore review here, or visit The Brooks Review and check out his opinion on it.

Find Your Files Using Found From the Mac App Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.cultofmac.com/171424/dow...k-air-giveaway/

"Even though we have this really cool internet technology thing called the "cloud" that stores all of our pictures, music, documents, videos, and anything else we want to throw at it, searching for stuff inside the cloud still sucks."

Not so much anymore now that Found has made it's way to the Mac App Store. The free app can search across multiple services to find your files. And if you head to the Cult of Mac site, you can enter a contest to win one of three Macbook Airs donated by Found. Even if you don't win the laptop, having this handy app makes you feel like a winner. Well, ok that might be going too far but it sure does simplify your searches!

Apple v. Google

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:00 AM

http://online.wsj.com/article_email...NDEwNDQyWj.html

"Since they got together in 2007, the iPhone and Google Maps have seemed like ideal digital bedfellows."

But with the expected release of maps in iOS 6 coming up, it might not be all roses. Interesting article from the Wall Street Journal that combines all we have heard before in one story. Well worth the read, as if rumors are correct, Apple will be dusting it up with Google once iOS 6 hits.

AT&T Eases International Data Rates For Travelers

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-57...et/pRza+(Crave)

"Linking to foreign data networks has always been a risky proposition fraught with big financial risks. Tales abound of American users racking up $1,000 phone bills on cruise ships at sea or while vacationing in European countries."

Well now AT&T is going to try and ease those fears by lowering the prices on their international plans. Not by much mind you, since the rates will be 120MB for $30 per month up to 800MB for $120 per month. It sure beats $1,000 though doesn't it?

ESPN Reporter Goes Fully Digital With the iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/05/28/how-...r-with-an-ipad/

"ESPN Pit Reporter Dave Burns covers NASCAR's premiere Sprint Cup Series for the network. He's been reporting on racing for many years, and recently abandoned his personal paper-based note system for carefully selected iPad apps."

I always read with interest any story that shows how someone has replaced their note taking methods or laptop usage with the iPad, since that is exactly what I'm trying to do on a daily basis. Interesting story of how the ESPN reporter came up with his own note taking sheets years ago and modified them into use on a iPad, basically the only thing he uses these days. For my note taking though, I prefer Notability. What are your favorite apps for note taking on the iPad?

WriteRoom Sale, $1.99 Today Only in Mac App Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 03:40 PM

http://www.cultofmac.com/170042/wri...day-only-deals/

"WriteRoom, arguably one of the best distraction-free text editors for Mac and iOS, is on sale today for just $1.99 as part of TwoDollarTuesday. That's 80% off its regular $9.99 price tag, but the offer is valid for today only, so you'll need to grab it quick."

Great deal if you need a text editor, at only $1.99 USD today only, which is a great deal and quite a discount from the normal $9.99 USD price.
