Gmail Updates Their iOS App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/135403/gma...-painting-tool/

"When Google first released their native Gmail app for iOS, it was just a total mess: an HTML5 web app that not only had less innate functionality than loading up Gmail in Mobile Safari, but couldn't even do its one selling point - push notifications - right. Heck, it even gave error messages at boot. Iit was so bad Gmail pulled the app within hours of release."

Ah but no longer, as this version of the Gmail app apparently is a winner. You can now choose between multiple signatures and it even has an option for adding a picture or signature to your email via a built-in painting program. I haven't used it yet, but am downloading now to give it a try. Usually I just use the iPhone mail program for all of my Gmail since it's easiest but we shall see. What are your thoughts on this latest update?

Breaking News Updates App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

http://blog.breakingnews.com/post/1...+Brooks+Review)

"We're excited to unveil a brand new Breaking News iPhone app with customized feeds, real-time mapping and a faster, cleaner display. This is our biggest update since we launched the app, adding many of the features that you've requested over the last several months."

The ability to set a quiet time period is the best update by far. I certainly wish more apps would do this.

Netflix 2.0 But Alas, No AirPlay

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ks_airplay.html

"Netflix has released its revamped user interface for iPhone and iPad after first debuting the new look for Android tablets."

Although it has been updated to fix some stability issues and supports client playback for the US, Latin America and Canada, the Netflix iPad app still lacks having the ability to use AirPlay. This is annoying.

Apple Updates MacBook Pro Line

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.maclife.com/article/revi...book_pro_review

"Apple launched its latest iteration of the MacBook Pro rather quietly, with no media event or even a press release. Instead, they quietly bumped up the specs in their flagship laptops."

The biggest change is the ability now to order one with the matte finish. Otherwise, kind of a ho-hum update.

NFL 2011 iPad App Updated So You Can Watch Thursday Night Football

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:13 PM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2011/12/...nline-broadcast

"The NFL's Thursday Night Football schedule is now in full swing, but if your cable provider doesn't give you access to the NFL Network, you've been missing out on some pretty good football."

Not anymore. With this update you are supposed to be able to watch the online broadcast of the Thursday night games. Since this is the first Thursday night since the app was updated, we shall see if it actually works!

Google Search for iPad Updated

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

http://ipadnewshub.com/2011/11/goog...ive-and-visual/

"If you're using the Google Search app for iPad, you'll be glad to know that Google has just pushed a major update to this iPad app, making it more interactive, visual and easier to find what you are searching for."

The cool thing about this is you can do your search, and then go to a result from within the app, using sliding gestures to go back and forth. If I was just looking for information that I might not need to bookmark, this sounds like it would work pretty slick. I'm not sure how much I would use this though, since you can search from Safari too. I guess I'll have to try it out and see what all the fuss is about. What are your thoughts?

Android Has Fixed Fragmentation! Well, Perhaps Not...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.insignificantthoughts.co...ed-think-again/

"Google recently announced it was going to put an 18 month upgrade requirement on any handset that wants to be Google-certified, meaning if you buy a handset today, you're guaranteed OS updates for 18 months."

A different philosophy indeed! I understand why the hardware manufacturers don't want to push out updates so that people will buy new phones to get the new goodies, but that certainly isn't a very good model if you want to retain customers. Apple is in the hardware business too, but they don't have a problem getting out updates that work on their older handsets, as evidenced by the chart above. Who do you think has the customer's best interests in mind? I know who my money is on, but what are your thoughts?

Mint 2.0 for iOS Released

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...ffline_viewing/

"Mint.com announced the immediate availability of Mint 2.0 for iOS on Wednesday. The new version of the financial management app added an iPad-native interface, along with support for viewing budgets and other account information without an Internet connection."

It's a free download from iTunes, and actually not a bad finance app. I started using Mint about 6 months ago, and while I still use Pageonce, I'm finding that Mint is working out better for me as far as timely information. What do you use to keep your finances in order?

iPad Update for TomTom

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/21/tomto...mized-for-ipad/

"If you are the type that likes a 10″ display for driving navigation, TomTom just updated its $59.99 iOS turn-by-turn navigation app to be universal and optimized for the iPad. You'll of course want to have a 3G version of the iPad/iPad 2 or be tethered through an iPhone that can share GPS."

Obviously it would be best to have the 3G iPad so you can use it in more places than your neighborhood Starbucks. One interesting note is that TomTom says this is the last update that will function on the iPhone 3G. Wonder what they have up their sleeves?

Apple Updates MacBook Pro Line

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 04:56 PM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...ok_pro_refresh/

"Apple quietly updated its MacBook Pro lineup on Monday with faster processors and more powerful video chips. The lineup now starts with at least a 2.4GHz Core i5 processor in the 13-inch model, and a 2.2GHz Core i7 processor in the 15-inch model, and all models include 4GB RAM."

Ah, out earlier than the rumors reported. Nice update to the line from what I can tell, and with no price jump! You can get all the details here at Apple's MacBook Pro site.

"Along with the barrage of updates and novelties unleashed today from Cupertino, Apple has pushed out the Apple TV 4.4 software update, which features some new ways to stream content to your TV."

I'm always glad to see updates done to the Apple TV, and for you hockey fans you will like this one. NHL is on the list now so you can subscribe for live streaming games. You can also watch Wall Street Journal content with this update as well as utilize the photo streaming capabilities now offered via iCloud.

In Depth Review of iOS 5

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:30 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...view_ios_5.html

"Apple's latest reference release of its mobile platform, iOS 5, isn't going to leave users wondering if they should upgrade. It's free, it has no real downsides, and has no competition among iPhone, iPod touch and IPad users. But here's a look at what's new and why it matters."

Now that iOS 5 has hit, it's not a bad idea to get a review of the features you will soon be using. This is a pretty informative quick read (only four pages) of information that will assist you in getting the most out of iOS 5. I haven't updated yet, so if you have, what features do you like best? Worst? Thoughts?

iOS 5 Update is Now Live

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:45 AM

According to my sources (my coworker sitting next to me), it appears the iOS 5 update is now live! Happy iOS 5 day everyone!

Jason Snell Runs Siri Through Her/It's/? Paces

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.edibleapple.com/2011/10/...t=Google+Reader

"In the video below, Jason Snell shows us the ins and outs of Siri, Apple's voice recognition feature which from the sound of it so far, may prove to be a killer software feature."

This feature may be what puts me over the edge since I'm on the fence about upgrading my iPhone 4. I still haven't decided, and I may try to wait in line to get one on Friday now that I've read some of the reviews. What are your thoughts on upgrading from an iPhone 4? Anything about the 4S that compels you to upgrade or are you just going to wait for the 5?

Get Your iPhone Ready for iOS 5

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:30 AM

http://www.businessinsider.com/how-...-5-2011-10?op=1

"It's a big week for Apple. Tomorrow Today it will push out its latest mobile operating system, iOS 5, to the public. If you have an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, you'll definitely want to upgrade. We've been using the developer version of iOS 5 since June, and we think it's the best yet."

And if you are going to get this latest update, and why wouldn't you, then you need to make sure your current iPhone is ready. Very simply, get the latest version of iTunes and sync your iPhone, making sure everything is backed up and all purchases have been transferred. And don't forget to back up those photos! Happy iOS 5 day everyone!

iCloud Appears to be Live

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:59 AM

http://www.appletell.com/technology...veryone-to-see/

"It's the 12th of October. Today is definitely iOS 5 day. After iTunes 10.5 was released yesterday, another part of iOS 5 has just gone live: iCloud."

If you want to access via your iPad or iPhone (or iPod Touch for that matter I suppose), you will have to be running iOS 5. And with iCloud you get 5GB of free storage, with options to buy more. If you are a current MobileMe subscriber however you get 20GB free until June of 2012.

OpenTable Updated With Handy iOS Calendar Integration

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ne...ar-integration/

"OpenTable has released an update to its online reservation application adding integration with the iOS calendar. OpenTable allows users to search for and make reservations at over 11,000 participating restaurants across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the U.K."

This works pretty well, I've used it several times, and now it's even better since it can add the reservation to your iOS calendar by simply tapping on the calendar icon. They have also done some of the obligatory bug fixes, and is a free download for iPad and iPhone.

Office 2008 and 2011 Updated, Disables Import From Lion's Mail App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...=rss_everything

"Microsoft released updates for Office 2008 and Office 2011 for the Mac on Wednesday. The updates addressed issues with each suite's email application, and the Office 2011 update also disabled the ability to import messages from Lion's Mail app into Outlook because the feature isn't working as expected."

The Office 2008 update is numbered 12.31.1, while the Office 2011 update is numbered 14.1.3, both available now. No word yet on when a fix for the import feature from Mail will be released.

1Password Hits The Mac App Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.insanely-great.com/news....nely+Great+Mac)

"1Password version 3.9 is now available exclusively via Apple's Mac App Store. This version also requires Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, and will require users to pay a $20 upgrade fee."

This is an annoyance for me. I purchased 1Password via their site, and have updated via their site since owning it. Now, starting with 1Password4, they will only be selling it via the Mac App Store. And I don't mean that 1Password is the only annoyance, there are other companies that do this. I can understand it, it is just the transition that is the pain. At what point do I move to the Mac App Store version? At least with 1Password, they cut their price by 1/2 and will give you a free upgrade to version 4 when it comes out, and it will only come out via the Mac App Store. What are your thoughts on this process or transition that many software vendors go through? For me, I'm going to plunk down the twenty bucks and make the move [affiliate link].
