Expand Your Apple TV's Output Potential

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/165716/59-...display-system/

"AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring add a lot of value to the second and third generation Apple TVs. Paired with a recent iPad or the iPhone 4S, an Apple TV can instantly become a gaming solution and a theater for home movies - and will be amazing when combined with Mountain Lion when it ships this summer."

The limit is the HDMI port for output, but with this handy adapter from Kanex called the ATV Pro Adapter, that limit is now gone. The port is standard VGA port along with the 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack so now you can connect your Apple TV to a number of different older displays.

Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/21/...oundbar-review/

"If you'll recall, it was back at CES when we realized that AirPlay devices would be "set to explode" by this year's end -- and it's certainly proving true as a storm of new speakers have hit the market over the last few months."

The gallery lineup is impressive! I'm looking forward to seeing more of these speaker come into the marketplace, but for now, I'm liking what I'm reading about the G-17. Except maybe the price. Ouch at $550.00 USD.

iHome's iW1 AirPlay Speaker

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

"Apple's AirPlay technology allows you to beam music and video wirelessly to devices like the Apple TV, from Macs and iOS devices."

And the latest entry into the field is this speaker unit from iHome. From the sounds of the review, it works pretty well. The coolest feature, in my opinion, is that it has a built in battery that lasts up to 10 hours once you take the unit from the charging base. And to recharge simply place the unit back on top of the base. Simple. It's available now for $299.99 via our affiliate link with Amazon.com.

Airplay and Apple TV

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://gigaom.com/apple/you-wanted-...play-mirroring/

"Since the second-generation Apple TV was released back in September of last year, people have wondered if and when apps would arrive on the device. After all, it runs on iOS software, so the underpinnings of app support are already present. But Apple hasn't opened up the Apple TV to third-party developers; or at least it hadn't before it unveiled iOS 5 on Monday."

Well you can't exactly get support for apps to run natively on the Apple TV, but the author found with AirPlay Mirroring that it was almost as good. You could do this with the Digital AV Adapter with iPad original and 2nd version, but with the wireless option it makes it an even better option. All you have to do is select your Apple TV as your output source in the multitasking menu bar and it works as designed. Anything you do on your iPad 2 from this point on will be reflected on your display connected to the Apple TV. Pretty slick.

Sonos Now AirPlay Compatible

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/sonos-adds...via-free-update

"Good news If you've got a Sonos music system and an Apple AirPort Express: a free software update will make your multi-room Sonos system AirPlay compatible."

The update called Sonos System Software 3.4 gives you AirPlay compatibility to the Sonos music system. However, you do need to have an Apple AirPort Express to make it work. You can find out more about this update here, and if you have a Sonos system it sounds like a no-brainer to me.

AirPlay for Safari and Third-Party Apps in 2011?

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:30 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/11/30/stev...arty-apps-in-2/

"MacRumors is reporting that one of their readers emailed Steve Jobs to ask if Apple was ever going to enable AirPlay to stream videos from third-party apps or those embedded in a web page in Safari. Jobs answered: "Yep, hope to add these features to Airplay in 2011.""

It seems that 2011 could be a breakout year for AirPlay, what with APIs scheduled to be released to developers. Will the flood gates open? With jailbreakers already having the capability of activating AirPlay for other devices, Apple can't be far behind. The ability to play/stream (almost) any content anywhere is a goal that seems reachable. I particularly like the idea of being able to stream music to my car's audio system.

AirPlay for All iOS Devices, Sort Of...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/11/12/ipho...irplay-support/

"Support for Apple's new AirPlay is supposedly excluded from the iPhone 3G, reports 9to5Mac. Designed to let users stream their iTunes library anywhere in their house via WiFi or an Ethernet connection, AirPlay technology will be found in all manner of audio/video equipment in the coming months, including the AirPort Express and Apple TV."

AirPlay support is part of the recent iTunes 10.1 update, but if you have a 3G you are out of luck apparently. As quickly as technology is changing, not too surprised they are bypassing the 3G, but it certainly won't make the owners happy. Sounds like another lawsuit.

BridgeCo and Apple Bring You Airplay

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

http://mashable.com/2010/09/09/airp...able+(Mashable)

"One of the new features that Apple announced at its music event last week was AirPlay, a feature that lets users wirelessly stream their music to different stereo systems all over their house."

Airplay is going to allow you to stream your music (and in the near future your video) to various compatible devices. What is unique about this whole thing is that this is the first time that Apple has allowed an outside company access to iTunes code so they could build software to allow access without having to "reverse engineer" the software. I'm pretty excited about this feature so I hope it works, my expectations are high!
