Google Docs Now Within the Jolicloud

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Talk" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/30/...esktop-joli-os/

"It already has one of the cutest names in cloud computing, and now it has Google Docs, too. Following up on its integration of Dropbox, Jolicloud just added support for the online office suite, which means you can access and edit all of your important missives and memos via the Jolicloud Desktop or Joli OS."

It seems that these mini-OSes (or probably better described as "companion environments?") are adding more and more features. With the addition of Dropbox and Google Docs, Jolicloud is becoming pretty full-featured. Do you think that these environments are robust enough that you may be able to eliminate "legacy" applications?

iPad Can Now Painfully Edit Google Docs

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:00 PM

http://thenextweb.com/google/2010/1...ous+(TNW+Apple)

"Hot from the GooglePlex is that iPad users can now not only view docs in Google Docs, edit them in Google Docs, but now we can also switch to the Desktop view to get the full power of Google Docs editing:"

No more View-only for Google Docs on the iPad. In addition to now being able to make basic edits, the option exists to edit in desktop mode (use the desktop version button), allowing many more editing functions. On the Vimeo video (click here), the author does a quick walkthrough, and, while the functionality is there, the user experience is not quite ready for prime time. The author recommends an external physical keyboard to get better results. He also mentions that the toolbar looks better in landscape mode, but functions better in portrait mode. Pretty impressive, as mobile Safari hasn't been the best at supporting more complex web 2.0 functionality, yet. Full editing within a browser window, yes please! Not a replacement yet for better text editing on the iPad, but definitely an improvement.

Google Docs Add Shared Folders

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:00 AM

"If recent events haven't left you skittish about cloud computing's future and your distaste for Microsoft Word exceeds even your hostility for Dane Cook, then you'll be excited to learn of the latest additions to Google Docs. Google updated its Web-based collection of office productivity tools Monday to include shared folders-a much-requested feature among Google Docs partisans."

This makes it pretty simple to share files, since you can create as many folders as you want to separate documents and set the sharing options for each one differently. They have also added the ability to upload multiple files at once. If you haven't used Google Docs, and you need some form of sharing capability without the cost you may want to check them out.

Spreadsheet Editing on the iPhone Available in Google Docs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/02/15/goog...-on-the-iphone/

"A while back we noted that Google had optimized the Google Docs services for viewing on the iPhone (and other mobile devices). It's taken a while, but now it's been announced that some basic editing is possible from the iPhone as well."

This may come in handy on the fly when you get some updated info and need to adjust the spreadsheet, but from what I've read, it isn't the easiest way to make changes. It is still best done on either your desktop or laptop, but at least this is a good start towards mobile functionality.
