"Twelve South is known for making great products that don't just look really cool, but they all serve higher functions without losing focus on maintaining simplicity."

And once again they have created something that if functional as well as cool looking. The HoverBar is an adjustable arm that attaches to any iMac or Apple Display, and holds your iPad. It's available now for $79.99 at the Twelve South site.

Apple's Educational iMac

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 02:30 PM

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/apple/app...The+Apple+Core)

"Apple quietly launched a lower-price 21-inch iMac on its Apple Store for Higher Education - seemingly in time to capture some of the lucrative back-to-school market. My question: Does anyone still buy desktop computers for students going to college?"

I'd say no. These days I can't imagine students wanting anything other than a laptop. And this is a scaled down version so for $200.00 USD you can get a much better machine. Faster CPU, double hard drive space, double RAM and double the video RAM. I'd spend the extra $200.00 USD to get that much more capability, wouldn't you?

Apple Unveils New iMacs, Teardown Follows, Now What?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 01:29 PM

http://electricpig.co.uk/2011/05/04...ate-all-in-one/

"Apple outed its brand new iMac line of all-in-one desktops this week, and this morning at Apple's London offices, we were treated to a demonstration of what the new Sandy Bridge computers are capable of."

To say they were impressed is putting it mildly, as they discovered that the 27-inch iMac with the AMD Radeon HD graphics is faster than the current entry level Mac Pro...30% faster from their figures. It has the Thunderbolt ports of course, as well as an HD webcam for the full screen FaceTime effect. It's greener, rated at an Energy Star 5.2 benchmark and has the option, at least at the 21 and 27-inch screen size, to swap out the regular hard drive fo a 256GB solid state drive. Not a bad upgrade to the iMac line. If you want to see the inside of this machine in all it's glory, have no fear as iFixIt has done their obligatory teardown. You can also find out more at the Apple site, but seriously, they packed a lot of stuff into this machine and still kept the entry price at $1,199.00 USD. Any thoughts as to what Apple is going to upgrade next?

The iMac as a Coffee Table

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Classic Apple" @ 05:00 AM

http://osxdaily.com/2011/02/27/got-...ly+(OS+X+Daily)

"If you have an extra Bondi Blue, Flower Power, or any of the other candied iMac G3's laying around, hey, why not turn it into a coffee table?"

For the Apple Fan Boy that has everything.

G4 iMac Lamp Anyone?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Classic Apple" @ 04:00 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5683266/the-imac.../full+(Gizmodo)

"This DIY iMac G4 lamp from Etsy is like Apple's version of the Luxo Jr. All of the lamp's parts come from a recycled iMac G4 and the overall result is just as cute, useful and brimming with character."

I'd pay $125.00 USD for a lamp like this, would look cool next to the iMac G4 I still own. Too bad it is sold already, but he does have some other Apple related products such as this G4 wall clock for $30.00 USD. I'll get in line for the lamp I think, since he is going to make some more of them. I'll just have to wait until mine finally dies since currently you have to supply the G4. That may change if he finds more G4s.

Quite the Change in 10 years

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Classic Apple" @ 06:29 PM

http://gizmodo.com/5647399/this-is-...ged-in-a-decade

"It's amazing to see how things change in a little more than a decade. Back then, Steve Jobs preached the new iMac as the center of your digital life, the internet machine. Now, the internet machine fits in your pocket."

Pretty amazing when you compare them side by side. On a side note, I was in the Bridgeport Apple Store last week, and noticed 3 or 4 of the employees standing around this guy at the counter. Turns out he brought in one of these iMacs and they were all admiring it. I have to admit it was in great shape.

The update will fix an undisclosed issue with brightness in the new 21.5 inch iMac, and you can either get it via Software Update or head over to the Apple site.

iMac is a Fast Machine, or so says Silverman

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.macdailynews.com/index.p...pc_can_compare/

"Apple's 'entire iMac family was updated with faster processors, bigger hard drives and more powerful graphics cards,' Dwight Silverman reports for The Houston Chronicle."

One impressive quote from Silverman: "As you can imagine by the specifications, this is one fast machine. While Macs have never had a reputation for being gaming systems, this model excels at that. I installed Valve's Steam gaming platform - which just recently began offering Mac support - as well as a native version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The iMac handled them superbly, with the eye candy turned up to 11." That is good to hear, as I've just now started playing around more with Steam. Most of my gaming is done on my Xbox 360 but the Valve system is appealing. But it's not all about gaming either, as you will see when you check out his review.

Several Updates Today

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 06:30 PM

http://gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com...ner=rss&emc=rss

"Android wasn't the only operating system with an update today. The iPhone got a security update, 4.0.2, that stops people from using malicious code that was released last week to take over your phone."

On top of that, Apple also released an update for the iMac, that fixed a display issue with the 21.5 inch iMac having to do with brightness, as well as the iPad 3.2.2 update. They didn't want to leave Windows users out of the loop either so they updated QuickTime to 7.6.7. The Windows update involved a security update, but OS X wasn't affected so it wasn't given the same update love.

Can't Wait for a New Mac Pro? How About a New iMac?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 12:31 PM

http://www.insanely-great.com/news....nely+Great+Mac)

"Tuesday the company announced a renewed all-in-one line of iMac computers. The new iMacs feature Intel's Core i3, i5, and i7 CPUs and updated ATI graphics processors."

According to Apple, the new iMacs will have the "latest Intel Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 processors and powerful new graphics. Starting at $1,199, the new iMac line is the fastest ever with dual-core processor speeds up to 3.6 GHz, quad-core speeds up to 2.93 GHz and discrete graphics including the powerful ATI Radeon HD 5750."

They give you the option to add a 256GB solid state drive as a primary or secondary drive, which supports up to 215 MB/second transfer rates. Apple's press release notes that these will start at $1,199.00 USD, and they are available now [affiliate link].

Turn Your iPad Into an iBook or a Mac Classic

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:00 AM

http://9to5mac.com/the_amazing_ipad...e+Intelligence)

"‘Scuse me if I keep this short on commentary -- but recall way back when first-gen iMacs suddenly found a new lease of life as fish tanks?"

I do, and I still want one! Pretty cool mods done of an iBook and a Mac Classic, allowing an iPad to be used with the cases. Seems more trouble than it's worth to me though.

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/13...r-27-inch-imac/

"Alongside today's release of refreshed MacBook Pros, Apple also quietly reduced the price of build-to-order upgrades for 4 GB RAM modules in its 27-inch iMacs."

Not only was there a refresh for the MacBooks, but to upgrade RAM in the 27-inch iMacs the price dropped $200.00 USD to $400.00 USD.

Apple Speaks About the 27-inch iMac Problem

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/apple-admits...e+Intelligence)

"Unless you've been hiding in a cave, you'll have known that Apple was having serious issues with that gorgeous new 27-inch iMac that they released for the holidays last year (but got pulled during the holiday shopping season)."

And now Apple has said that due to "production problems" there were some issues and if you are affected, contact Apple Care. At least now you have an outlet to get your iMac fixed or replaced, officially. If you are concerned you might have one, you can go to this test and find out. If any part appears yellow, you may have one of the problem iMacs.

Apple Back to 5 to 7 Day Wait Period for iMac Shipping

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...it_doubles.html

"New 27-inch iMac purchases direct from Apple now have a shipping wait time of 5 to 7 days, suggesting the hardware maker has addressed issues that plagued the desktops."

From months to days, we can only hope they have fixed the problems.

Apple Update for 27-inch iMacs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.loopinsight.com/2010/02/...display-issues/

"Apple issued an update late Monday that supposedly fixes issues with the company's 27-inch iMac display. According to notes provided with the update, the fix 'updates the display firmware on 27-inch iMac systems to address issues that may cause intermittent display flickering.'"

You can get details at Apple on this update, but it's basically firmware update for the display in hopes that it will fix the flickering issues. No mention about the fix for the yellowing screen issues.

Apple Acknowledge Yellow Tint Problem on iMacs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/146...l?lsrc=rss_main

"Last November, Robert McGovern bought a 27-inch iMac equipped with a quad-core Core i7 processor. When it arrived 12 days later, McGovern, a British citizen living in Germany, happily went about setting up his new desktop machine. That happiness lasted about half-an hour."

At that time he found out his screen was getting a yellowish tint along the edge and joined the many (at least from what the discussion board responses are showing) customers that are reporting the same problem to Apple. The biggest hurdle in these types of cases is to get Apple to acknowledge that a problem exists. Well now they have and are in the process of getting these machines fixed, however the turnaround on the 27-inch iMac for example, is about three weeks. If you want to find out if your machine may be one of the potentially jaundiced ones, check out this chart. There is also a lengthy write-up over at Gizmodo on this issue.

27-inch iMac Delays, Just in Time for Christmas!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ent_delays.html

"Apple has acknowledged that it is working to fulfill orders for its new 27-inch iMac, though the hardware maker has not officially addressed reports of screen flickering for some users."

The video is an example of what one owner is experiencing right out of the box. So in trying to fix the problem that they have yet to acknowledge, the shipments have been delayed. Reports from other sources state delays in shipping are from two weeks to five months. Ouch. That will put a crimp in the Christmas sales.

I Haz a New Bed!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Classic Apple" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/icat-baske...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

""I'm more of a dog person, but the "Cats Love Macs" photo stream on Flickr is one of my guilty pleasures. (Yeah, I know)."

Reminds me of the aquarium that was built using an old Mac SE. Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind having one of those aquariums. It is almost Christmas, maybe I'll send myself one.

27-inch iMac Also An External Monitor

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 01:00 PM

http://blog.expandrive.com/2009/10/...ith-a-free-mac/

"Today Apple released a new 27″ iMac with impressive specs, a unibody design and an impressive LED backlit display. Somewhat hidden in the announcement is a small but important feature - the DisplayPort connection on the back of the 27″ iMacs operates both as a jack for an external monitor and also as an input for an external computer if you want to use your 27″ iMac as a monitor."

I could have used this capability a year or so ago when my older iMac died. Some were noting that they were cancelling a 30-inch Dell monitor in favor of this since it "includes a free Mac." One way to look at it I guess!
