Siri Purchased by Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.insanely-great.com/news....nely+Great+Mac)

"How do you turn $24 million into $200 million? Become a strategic purchase for either Apple or Google, apparently. Word is Apple has paid between $150 to $250 million for the two and a half year old app start up, according to TechCrunch. The San Jose-based company is listed as having only 19 employees with four venture funders."

Siri is an interesting app, but it never worked for me because the tone of my voice is such that it never registers with these types of programs properly. Calling 411 and trying to work through the voice recognition is the same thing. I want a number in Portland and I get referred to Pendleton. Frustrating. But this does open up a lot of speculation as to why Apple decided to buy them. What does this mean for future versions of the iPhone OS or does it mean anything at all? Is this one of the steps they are taking to rid themselves of Google? Only Apple knows at this point but it sure generates a lot of buzz, just like the purchase announcement yesterday of Intrinsity. Intrinsity is a bit easier to understand, for me anyway, since they are rumored to be part of the design team of the new A4 chip. The only thing I know for sure is the venture capitalists hit the jackpot on Siri.

Apple Event Announcement Boosts Stock

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/01/19/appl...f-jan-27-event/

"The news that Apple is going to announce something on January 27th has the stock market in a tizzy. At one point this morning, Apple shares were up to $214.16, up $8.23 or about 4.0%."

Currently Apple Stock is down to $210.40 USD, just a little over five dollars shy of their 52-week high of $215.59 USD that they reached on January 5, 2010. I guess we shall see in about a week what happens when all is revealed at the event!

Apple Stock Hits All Time High

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.macrumors.com/2009/10/21...nings-strength/

"Apple's stock price has hit an all-time high today, surging over 4% at the moment to top $207 per share. The peak eclipses Apple's previous high set in late December 2007. Apple's stock subsequently sank to a low of under $80 per share in late 2008 amid uncertain economic times before rebounding strongly over the past eight months."

This was yesterday, and on top of that news the crazy stock guy over at TheStreet.com, Jim Cramer, has predicted Apple will hit $300.00 USD. He is basing it on those "words I love to hear" when Apple Executives said they cannot meet the demand for certain products, one of which is the iPhone.

North Carolina Turns Into Apple Country

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.9to5mac.com/Apple-north-carolina

"The rumors have been swirling for weeks, but as per the Governor's words, it is official. Gov. Beverly Perdue signed the incentives bill targeting Apple into law today."

And here are the Governor's words: "North Carolina continues to be a prime location for growing and expanding global technology companies," Perdue said in a news release. "We welcome Apple to North Carolina and look forward to working with the company as it begins providing a significant economic boost to local communities and the state."

The data center for Apple is supposed to employ 50 or so people full-time, and made possible by the tax break that is said to be worth close to $46 million USD over the next 10 years. The bonus is if they keep the server farm in place for 30 years because then the savings in corporate taxes jump to over $300 million USD. Seems like a lot of money for 50 jobs doesn't it? But perhaps with the jobs created in building this facility and the small businesses that may benefit from being close to this facility it may have penciled out for them.
