Bring Back The Lock Steve!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

"I upgraded my iPad to iOS 4.2 today. I was so happy. Then I spent 30 minutes wondering why I lost my audio... until I remembered one of its new "features": Transform the iPad's screen lock into the mute switch."

The biggest problem I have seen so far with the iOS 4.2 update on the iPad. This really annoys me, more than I thought it would as I use the lock, or what used to be the lock, quite a bit. Yes, I know, it's simple procedure to lock the orientation using the touch screen by clicking twice on the home button, slide your finger left and tap to lock the screen, but it was so much easier with the button. I'm hoping that Apple takes the user opinions into account but I'm not sure they will.

Lose Your Songs With iOS 4.2? Here Is The Fix

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:30 AM

"The customary series of unexpected fault reports are coming through the wires this am, with iOS 4.2 reportedly munching music on some iPhones and causing hassles with HDMI on the Apple TV. Here's what we got so far, and we hope, nay, urge readers with further information to use comments below to help each other out on this."

The bug on Apple TV apparently is causing some flickering, but there is an update due out soon for Apple TV so hopefully that will be fixed. The music issue has also cropped up, which makes it appear as if all the songs on your iPhone have been deleted. The fix is fairly simply though, all you have to do is the following:

  • Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes on the computer.
  • The phone appears under devices in the left-hand column;
  • click the arrow to the left of it so your media categories appear and select music;
  • Play a song on the iPhone via iTunes on your computer;
  • Sync the iPhone againRe-open the iPod app on the iPhone;
  • Wait a while while the iPod updates its library.

Simple to fix but annoying just the same.

Ok, So There Are a Few Problems Printing With iOS 4.2

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:32 AM

"When you think about it, it's amazing how much actual work you can get done with just an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You can create, read, and edit everything from documents to email and spreadsheets from just about anywhere."

But it is limited, since it really only works with these five HP printers:

  • HP Photosmart Premium Fax e-All-in-One Printer-C410HP
  • Photosmart Premium e-All-in-One Printer series-C310
  • HP Photosmart Plus e-All-in-One Printer series-B210
  • HP ENVY 100 e-All-in-One Printer Series-D410
  • HP Photosmart eStation Printer series-C510

But if you really want to give it a go, and you have one of the above printers, do a quick read of this how-to and you can get it to work with minimal frustration.

Find My iPhone Feature Free With iOS 4.2

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:32 AM

"The Find My iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) feature is now free to use without a MobileMe℠ subscription and helps you locate your missing device.* The Find My iPhone app is a free download on the App Store℠ and lets users easily locate a missing device on a map and have it display a message or play a sound. Users can even remotely lock or wipe data from a lost device to protect privacy."

Now you don't even need a MobileMe subscription to take advantage of the Find My iPhone app, which was one of the main reasons I kept my subscription to the MobileMe service in the first place. I guess I will have to re-evaluate my needs when it comes to MobileMe. I like the email address and the iDisk functionality as far as backups, but there are so many options out there now it doesn't seem financially wise to spend $99.00 USD ($149.00 USD for family plan) for the service. Or even spend the discounted amount when purchased through How about you, are you considering dropping MobileMe?

So What Do You Need to Know for iOS 4.2?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:06 AM

"iOS 4.2 for iPad brings long-awaited changes to the iPad that have been available on the iPhone for months. Here are some of the most notable things to expect when you update to iOS 4.2."

Informative summary of what the update includes, after giving you some guidance on what you need to have to take advantage of the update to iOS, also known as iOS 4.2.

iOS 4.2 Update Due Today

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:43 AM

"The long awaited 4.2 update is finally here bringing a slew of updates to the iPad that iPhone users will already be used to."

I'm in Oregon and no update as of the posting of this story, but some out there are already enjoying the benefits of the 4.2 update, among them folders and direct renting of TV shows and Movies on your iPad. You can find out all the details from the press release posted at the Apple PR site. The update is due in at 10:00 PST today.

Can iOS 4.2 Be Far Behind?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:00 AM

"App updates for iOS 4.2 have began appearing on the App Store."

Well, I just checked (02:54 am my time) and the update still isn't there, but with signs like this out there, it can't be far behind!

iPad to get New Multitasking Bar With iOS 4.2

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:21 AM

"The first interesting tidbit to surface from the iOS 4.2 GM firmware release today yesterday is the fact that there is a new multitasking bar on the iPad."

Quick access to the brightness and volume controls, as well as a button for Airplay on the left side. And according to this story from MacNN, it will also allow sign in to MobileMe via your Apple ID. I'm just excited about the printing ability personally. Since the Gold Master of iOS 4.2 was released to developers yesterday, it normally doesn't take long at all for it to be released to all of us.

Orientation Switch on iPad Will Soon Be a Mute Button

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:00 AM

"When iOS 4.2 gets rolled out to iPad users sometime in the coming weeks, the button on the side that, until now, has prevented the screen from swapping between portrait and landscape will become a mute switch, just like it is on the iPhone. However, since this is clearly a software-managed control rather than being hard-wired, some users were hoping that this might be configurable somewhere in the settings."

I like the orientation switch so this is not good news for me. Apple won't even make it configurable apparently, which is par for the course with Apple when it comes to modifications of hardware controls. What are your thoughts, good or bad?

iOS 4.2 Beta Three (3) for iPad - Getting Close!

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Talk" @ 10:00 AM

I've been running iOS 4.2 Beta Three (3) on my iPad for about 24 hours now, and nary a problem. This beta seems pretty solid so far, so it looks like Apple is getting close! Some of the early beta problems (I skipped Beta 2) with Mail seem fixed. Biggest issue that I'm seeing right now is with the iPad calendar app and the beta version of MobileMe not quite working together yet. Here's a screen shot of my iPad to whet your appetite.

Looking good Apple!

Some Interesting Features of 4.2 iOS

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:30 PM,+iPad,+iPod)

"Netflix streaming from iPad or iPhone to your TV via iOS 4.2 AirPlay? That's what Mark Gurman is showing off."

A welcome addition, and while at first glance you might be thinking what is the big deal? Isn't the Apple TV supposed to have Netflix on it? Yes, but this proves you can stream from your iOS device, so what is to prevent you from streaming Hulu Plus or any other service you have an app for to your TV? That is the real benefit. They have also added a feature allowing you to set individual text message sounds for users. I'm going to get some use out of that feature as well since my work pages come to my iPhone and I've been wanting to be able to differentiate them for some time now from my regular text messages. Have you read about any of the updates to iOS that you are going to find extremely useful?

More on iOS 4.2 (Beta) for the iPad

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:30 PM

"It's a revelation. It's the way the iPad always should've been. With iOS 4.2 there's multitasking, a unified inbox, folders and... Helvetica in Notes ... We are talking about a beta that's two months from a final release, so not everything's done. But iOS 4.2 on iPad already feels so good, even if it is things we're just used to by now on the iPhone."

Well, it's finally started to appear, iOS 4.2 for the iPad. It is the first beta, still several months prior to scheduled GA release, but much of the functionality is at least partially there, and much of it can be put through its paces. Folders will allow 20 apps per folder, a nice touch! Good bye icon overload, and way too many pages of apps. The unified inbox works as hoped-for, and definitely benefits from the larger screen size. AirPrint is not yet complete, but works. GameCenter works as expected. Another added bonus, Helvetica is available for Notes (in settings), good bye Marker Felt! Consensus from the first few articles: We're not going back to the old iOS 3, no matter what. I can hardly wait.

iOS 4.2 for iPad: Summary

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:30 PM

"As many of you will already know, Steve Jobs announced iOS 4.2 for iPad at yesterday's Special Event, stating that the software update will be available come November. Following this announcement, Apple has updated the iPad section of its site to include information on the update."

iOS 4.2 for iPad is eagerly awaited, and in November 2010 will offer folders, multitasking, support for wireless printing, AirPlay wireless media streaming, unified inbox, and Game Center. I'm eagerly awaiting folders and the unified inbox feature. iOS 4.1 scheduled for release on September 8th will be predominantly a bug fix release + HDR photos.
