Want to Feel Like You Bought An iPhone 3G S?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

http://theappleblog.com/2009/06/19/...otos-and-video/

"Up here in Toronto, things weren't nearly as crazy as they were in New York City. I thought they would be, so I showed up at my local Fido at 6:30 a.m. expecting to be maybe tenth or so in line. I was second."

Well in case you are like me and don't have one pre-ordered or haven't picked one up, you can sort of get the same experience with this unboxing of an iPhone 3G S. It has some nice comparisons of photos taken from a 3G versus 3G S, a video done by the 3G S as well as the typical stages of revealing all that is included. I know, it's not really like doing it yourself, but if you have a few months before you can upgrade, it will have to do! That is, unless you convince Vincent to invite you over when he opens his iPhone 3G S.

Sales of iPhone 3G S Predicted to Top 500K This Weekend

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...is_weekend.html

"Apple, which will launch its new iPhone 3G S handset in eight countries on Friday, is expected to sell half a million of the devices before the weekend is over and sales of the $99 iPhone 3G model are tallied into the mix."

The prediction is by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, which would be about twice what the original iPhone did during it's launch weekend but only about 1/2 of what the 3G handset sold in it's opening weekend. Since the change is less "dramatic" than the change from 2G to 3G, and it is only going to be sold in 8 countries versus 21 countries for the 3G, Munster doesn't believe it will surpass the original 3G. But he does note in the chart above that in a full quarter the 3G S will hit a couple million more units than the 3G sold.

Who knows what will happen, but I'd be surprised if it didn't surpass the 500K weekend sales figure. The addition of video has to draw people out don't you think? Or do you think he is right in his estimate?

AT&T Helps Out it's Customers, Sorta

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/AT&T-iPhone-3GS-update

"We hope you guys didn't already go out and buy a Pre, because AT&T has made a change to its policy: It will now give iPhone 3G owners who purchased in the first 3 months (July, August or September 2009), the original iPhone price upgrades. Sort of. Log into your account to find out exacly how much of your money they want."

This tidbit was taken from the AT&T press release they have posted on their site. At first glance I thought it was that you could upgrade, from the 3G into a 3G S, if last year you upgraded or bought a 3G during the Summer of 2009. And from reading several other news sources, I wasn't the only one. Now that I have re-read it a few times, it appears that if you are eligible for your "normal" upgrade during July, August or September of 2009, you will be able to buy a 3G S on June 18th for the upgrade price so you won't have to wait those long weeks or months until your official upgrade date. If you have paid extra and you fall within their guidelines, they will also credit you back the amount you "overpaid" so to speak. So just because you were allowed to upgrade last year from 2G to 3G, doesn't mean you will be able to this year.

So AT&T is throwing you a bone, giving you a minimum of a two week upgrade improvement on your account. I'm sure it isn't what the masses were hoping for, but it is probably the best they are going to get. I may take advantage of this since I'm now eligible again for an upgrade in July 2009 (I posted previously on another thread that my date kept changing from 2009 to 2010 for an unknown reason). I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to stand waiting two weeks (at least the last time I checked) for my upgrade so thanks AT&T!

Can't Find Insurance for Your iPhone 3G S? Best Buy Has Some

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._insurance.html

"Those who want added protection for their new iPhone 3G S units on launch day will have the option of queuing up at Best Buy to purchase both Apple's device as well as a rare accident insurance plan, albeit one which may cost almost as much as the phone itself."

At $15.00 USD per month, in one year you would spend $180.00 USD for this insurance. So unless you are a klutz and have a problem hanging onto your iPhone, it might not pencil out for you. The other problem is that you have to buy your iPhone 3G S at Best Buy in order to qualify for the service. But there aren't many options out there for insurance, at least that I have found. You may be able to get some coverage via our renters or homeowners insurance, so I think I would check that out before I spent any money on this plan.

iPhone 3G S Sale Timeline

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-1...subj=News-Apple

"Apple offered clarification Wednesday for when exactly the new iPhone 3G S will go on sale."

Looks like next Friday, June 19th at 8am the new iPhone will be available at Apple Stores in the US and 7 other countries, and yes this is in all time zones at 8am. This will be the same at the AT&T stores, unless you have pre-ordered in which case you will be able to pick them up at 7am. I'm wondering if this will generate the lines that the last two sales have generated, what do you think?

T-Mobile Netherlands Outs the Specs on the iPhone 3G S

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/141...l_mwnws_h_crawl

"Ever since the introduction of the iPhone 3G S last Monday, there has been a lot of discussion on the Internet about what might be powering this significantly faster and more responsive phone. Even before the phone had been launched, in fact, the Internet had been abuzz with rumors that the new iPhone would feature a processor running at 600MHz and will come equipped with 256MB of RAM."

And so the rumors were true in this regard. Not sure how secret this was supposed to be, but the specs are still up on the T-Mobile Netherlands website. For comparison, the current iPhone 3G has a 412 MHZ processor and 128MB Ram. For the full meal deal on specs, I suppose we will have to wait until someone tears apart an iPhone 3G S and lists the hardware and post some pictures like they usually do on these things.

An iPhone 3G S Update I Hadn't Heard About, Until Now

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

http://cultofmac.com/no-more-greasy...t-coating/11549

"As well as faster hardware and a better camera, the new iPhone 3GS has a surprise feature that totally sells it for me: an oleophobic coating that makes the screen resistant to face oil and fingerprints."

No mention of this on the regular 3G site, just the mention above on the 3G S site for technical specs so I guess this is another update, but one I hadn't heard mentioned in any of the articles until now. Anything they can do to lessen the smudges is ok in my book, but I'm not sure how well it will work, even with a fancy coating. To be honest, I don't really notice them at all unless my screen is dark, then they are very visible. But when I'm using the iPhone smudges don't show up at all so it doesn't hinder my use in any way.

But if they do bother you and you want to make sure you are cleaning it correctly, the Apple site has a special section on this very topic: "If your iPhone has an oleophobic coating on the screen (iPhone 3G S only), simply wipe your iPhone's screen with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove oil left by your hands and face."

AT&T And The iPhone Upgrade

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...phone_3g_s.html

"During its presentation at WWDC Monday, Apple highlighted new pricing for the iPhone 3G and the upcoming iPhone 3G S model but didn't explain that existing iPhone 3G customers will have to pay a $200 premium to upgrade to the latest model if they want one right away."

This has caused quite a ruckus all over the net. Differing opinions are being thrown out there, ranging from "too bad, you knew what you were getting into when you agreed to the 2-year contract" to "AT&T is gouging us!" I won't go to the gouging extreme, since they will supposedly allow you to upgrade at the 18-month mark, however the last time I upgraded it was at the one year mark so I'm a little perturbed at 18-months to be honest. I really want to test out the video of this new iPhone but I haven't decided yet if it is worth the $200.00 USD premium, what do you think?

If you are curious if you qualify for the upgrade, head on over to Apple, and they can tell you when you will be eligible, just don't break the screen when your information pops up!

I Know, You Are Shocked, But There is a New iPhone!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 08:30 AM

http://smokingapples.com/iphone/app...the-iphone-3gs/

"After the most number of rumours I've ever seen about any Apple product, Apple finally showed up at WWDC with a new iPhone that looks exactly the same as the previous one. The iPhone 3G S, where the S stands for Speed. Perhaps it's not all that bad as there are some more features under the hood, and new software features enabled by this new speed."

I don't think anyone was surprised by the announcement of the new iPhone 3G S after the plethora of stories that were in the mix in the months leading up to WWDC '09. Now that it has been officially announced, just what do you get for your money? Speaking of money, lets start with pricing.

Thankfully they bumped up the storage in the new iPhone 3G S to 16GB and 32GB, so for $199.00 USD you get 16GB and if you want to go a bit higher, they have the 32GB version for $299.00 USD. The older version of the iPhone 3G 8GB is now $99.00, that is if you can find one in stock. Read more...
