To LTE or Not To LTE, That is the Question

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:14 PM

"A lot of Apple fans are sure that the next iPhone will support the true 4G LTE networks now being deployed by major cellular carriers."

Apple has said all along that they won't do an LTE iPhone as long as there are battery issues, and with the latest review from Engadget on the Galaxy Nexus, I think we will be waiting awhile. I won't buy a phone that has to have that much coddling when it comes to battery life. The speed of the phone isn't as important to me as not having to carry around an extra battery or two with me in order to use my phone all day. Or having to make sure I have a charger chord in my pocket. Until Apple solves the battery life issue that seems to be a problem currently with other phones, I doubt they will go that route. And if they did, I certainly wouldn't upgrade. What are your thoughts?

AT&T LTE: Fast, Faster, Fastest

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Talk" @ 09:30 PM

http://gizmodo.com/5837882/heres-ho...network-will-be

"Of all the fake, gimpy, tortoise-slow 4Gs of the world, AT&T has historically been far and away the fakest, gimpiest, tortoise-slowest. But the real-deal LTE hotness is coming soon. And as this real-life demo shows, it's going to be blazing."

Download speeds of 22Mbps and upload speeds of 6Mbps make many (or most?) broadband connections seem slow in comparison. Currently available only in Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas and Houston, expect some sticker shock when prices are announced. Visions of dropping my DSL service are dancing through my head after seeing this video!

Verizon Expands LTE Wireless Network

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 11:16 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/160...l#lsrc.rss_main

"Verizon Wireless announced 19 more cities that will get its faster LTE wireless network service starting Thursday, bringing the total to 74 metropolitan areas."

19 new locations across the country, including Sacramento, CA, Hartford, Conn, Boise, ID and many more. You can get the full list here in case you are wondering if your city made the cut. This just adds fuel to the competitive fires so to speak as AT&T is going to launch their own LTE 4G network this summer in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas Houston and San Antonio, while Sprint is rumored to be in the planning process to add LTE to it's 4G network. This can't come soon enough for me, with data speeds up to 10 Mbps it certainly will leave 3G in the dust.

New Network Capability to Allow Multitasking on the Verizon iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 AM

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/...ner=rss&emc=rss

"One important weapon in AT&T's arsenal against Verizon in the iPhone arms race is that Verizon's wireless network does not allow smartphone owners to make voice calls and surf the Web at the same time."

Until you use it, not sure you will realize how handy it is to talk on the phone and be able to surf the 'Net for data so this will be a big bonus for Verizon customers. The next version of their network, which they call LTE, will allow for the simultaneous data and voice capability that we AT&T users have come to love. This isn't for at least a year however, but they are going to demonstrate it while at the Mobile World Congress being held this week in Barcelona.
