NY Times Offering Deal for Long Time Subscribers

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

"The New York Times has been criticized since it announced pricing for its online and mobile editions, but the newspaper is making moves to draw users in."

The moves they are making are offering long time customers, via email, a free one year subscription to the mobile apps (both iPhone and iPad) and the web version of the paper. Not sure yet who is defined as a "long time subscriber" but it's not a bad deal, and I wonder if this is in response to the complaints about the confusion of the pricing, and they hope to draw in their customers while they can? What are your thoughts?

NY Times and NY Post on the iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/10/15...-subscriptions/

"A pair of New York newspapers are making news themselves today with their recent iPad app releases, with The New York Times introducing a greatly-expanded application and The New York Post rolling out a new app with subscriptions handled via in-app purchasing."

I didn't care too much for the first NY Times app, but this one [affiliate link] looks pretty good since they have expanded the content and the navigation is improved and simplified. It is free until sometime in 2011 when they will start charging for the editions, but no pricing has been set. The NY Post [affiliate link] is also offering their product and they have subscription prices on a monthly, 6-month and yearly basis. Apple has been trying to work out deals with publishers so I wonder if this is just the first step in getting others on board?

Travel Organization Tips

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/03/t...ner=rss&emc=rss

"This fall, I was lured to Panama. Friends who settled there a year ago had regularly regaled me, an avid traveler, with visions of a lively Latin city with nearby, unspoiled beaches bordered by jungle."

If you are traveling anytime soon, this article has some good tips for you, and references some handy websites to use to get organized. One of them, Gliider, is a pretty slick Firefox add-on that will also be coming out with an iPhone app in the first part of 2010. Unfortunately no Safari plug-in at this time or in the near future if at all according to what I've been able to ascertain. David Pogue also blogs about another app called Flight Track that helps him out in his travels. There are many options out there for travelers, what do you use to help you get from point a to point b and all points in between?

NY Times and the App Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/06/t...ner=rss&emc=rss

"IAN LYNCH SMITH, a shaggy-haired ball of energy in his late 30s, beams as he ticks off some of the games that Freeverse, his little Brooklyn software company, has landed on the iPhone App Store's coveted (and ever-changing) list of best-selling downloads: Moto Chaser, Flick Fishing, Flick Bowling and Skee-ball."

Mr. Smith earned over $180,000.00 USD on his game Skee-Ball alone so he seems pretty happy with the opportunity that the App Store has given him. Can't say I blame him, there are all kinds of resources out there for anyone that wants to develop a program for the iPhone/iPod Touch and who knows, you could strike gold too. That seems to be the draw, for companies large and small, it kind of evens the playing field when it comes to app development. This is a 5 page (well 5 pages on the web) article, general overview of the iPhone and the App Store and what it all means to those involved. The author seems to say that this is the standard for mobile app development, Apple is leading the pack and it is their race to lose. What are your thoughts?
