63% of Streaming Web Do Not Require Flash

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.digitaltrends.com/comput...-require-flash/

"A new study shows that nearly two thirds of all streaming Web video is HTML5 compatible. In other words, Adobe Flash is no longer needed for a majority of Web content."

HTML5-compatible video aka H.264 is now comprising more than 60% of the streaming video on the Internet. MeFeedia indexed approximately 30 million videos from over 33,000 sites to come to this conclusion. Amazingly, in less than a year, over 50% of the video out there has dropped Flash as a requirement. I find I don't miss it most of the time on my laptop using Safari, but If there is something I want to see I just switch to Chrome. How about you, do you use Flash or do you find that it isn't that big of a deal not to have it installed on Safari?

Streaming Video to PlayOn Your iDevice via Windows

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:30 AM

http://thenextweb.com/apps/2010/07/...ous+(TNW+Apple)

"PlayOn, a program that takes content from streaming video sites like Hulu and displays them on game consoles such as the Xbox 360 or PS3, is coming to the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad."

A somewhat convoluted way of getting streaming videos onto your mobile iDevice, PlayOn runs on an iDevice, and its software talks to "host" software running on a Windows PC or Windows on a Mac with BootCamp or Parallels (no mention of VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox). PlayOn acts as a remote control device back to Windows, and the PC software manages content formatting for the mobile device. WiFi is necessary for the content transfer. Current limitations:
  • A Windows PC or virtual instance is required, with PlayOn software running. No plans for a native OS X (or Linux) version.
  • Devices must all be on the same WiFi network.
  • Cost. A free "lite" version can play back only local media on the Windows system and network, plus Pandora streaming radio content. PlayOn Premium costs $39.99 for the first year, and $19.99 for subsequent years. To contrast, HuluPlus costs $120 per year.

PlayOn has a growing list of third-party plugins ( link ), so if you're interested in viewing streaming video (today) on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, PlayOn may be worth trying.

Calling All Readers: Help Me Torture Test a Video Solution

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Status Updates" @ 04:00 AM

About two months ago, I purchased a Canon HF100 high-definition video camera to replace my ageing but still totally sweet Canon GL2 (that thing has such great optics!). It took me a while to re-create my template in 16:9 format, but I did and published my first two HD videos to YouTube...and I was quite disappointed with the results. YouTube only offers a 4:3 aspect ratio player, so 16:9 videos look pretty tiny with those big black bars on the top and bottom. I set out to find a better solution for embedding videos on Thoughts Media sites, and I think I've found one: MotionBox.

I say "I think" because while the video quality is utterly fantastic, and for $20 per year they offer a lot of value, I've been seeing some problematic playback issues today - sometimes the video will start right away, other times it will take 30+ seconds before it starts, and sometimes it won't start at all, instead showing a black box. And sometimes it will just "break" and stop playing. These are obviously serious problems, but I don't know if MotionBox is just having a bad day, or if my bandwidth Kung-fu is weak today. So check out the video below and report back what you find - does it play back OK? Any problems or glitches?
