Tweak iCal With These Tips

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.maclife.com/article/howt...g_more_out_ical

"iCal will be getting a major upgrade once it's fully integrated into iCloud, but until then you may want to tame the beast with a few easy tweaks."

Good article about getting the most out of iCal. I've used many different calendar programs for iOS but I always come back to iCal, what calendar program have you found most useful?

Data Migration The Easy Way

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 05:46 PM

http://lifehacker.com/5820744/how-t...er-to-a-new-one

"When you buy a new computer, you start with a clean slate, which is great, but you don't have any of your documents or settings from your old computer. Luckily, it's very easy to transfer all your files and settings from your old computer to the new one-whether you're on Windows or a Mac."

Lots of talk about new Macbook Airs in the near future, not to mention September is fast approaching for the start of a new school year and potentially new laptops for the kiddos, so it's probably appropriate to give a little info on how to do some data migration from your "old" laptop into that shiny new machine. And this one from Lifehacker is a pretty good one as it covers Windows to Windows, Windows to Mac and vice versa as well as Mac to Mac.

"Google+ is already popular, and it isn't yet showing any signs of slowing down. If you're already in, or if you're eagerly awaiting an invite, there are a few ways you can improve the experience when accessing Google's new social network from Mac and iOS devices."

Several great tips, especially using the bookmarks feature to make it handy on your iOS device. I'm just now playing around with Google+, how do you like it? Any tips? Thoughts?

Get Your Computer Ready for Lion

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.maclife.com/article/feat...r_mac_os_x_lion

"People of Earth: Mac OS X Lion is about to be uncaged! Apple finally gave us a more accurate window for the release of the latest operating system release: July, which is only a couple of weeks days away. That may seem like a long time if you're eager to install it right now, but here are a few things to occupy you in the meantime and help make sure you're ready to cage the big cat on your own Mac when it escapes into the wild."

The big change, other than the ridiculously low upgrade price of $29.00 USD, is that this will be available from the Mac App Store, so now you don't have to make that trip to your favorite Apple retail outlet to get your copy. Over 250 new features and it will cost as much as the minor upgrade to Snow Leopard. And all that comes from a 4GB download. So in order to prepare for this, you do need to do a few things to make sure you are ready, which are outlined in this article. Things such as making sure your computer is compatible and verifying your applications will run are two of the biggest.

Helpful Tips for Google Services

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:30 PM

http://www.macworld.com/article/158...l#lsrc.rss_main

"Getting the most out of Google products such as Gmail, Docs, and YouTube is a must if you're using them for business. However, the products are so packed with features that it can be hard to keep up. Here are nine little-known features across various Google services that could change the way you work, or perhaps make life that little bit easier."

Most of these tips I was aware of, however the @gmail.com versus @googlemail.com was one I was oblivious to. Basically you can take your main gmail account such as jeff@gmail.com and change it to jeff@googlemail.com and it will still get to you. I also like the fact that clicking on the details button on the bottom of the page you can get information about the last access to your account, where it was from and how it was accessed. There are several other tips in this article so if you use anything Google, it is well worth reading.

Photography Not Your Strong Suit? These Tips Might Help

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:04 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/156...l?lsrc=rss_main

"It's unavoidable: During the holidays someone is bound to get out a camera to grab some festive snapshots. If you're the person with camera duties, then you should follow some of these photo guidelines. If you're not the person shooting, then you can offer these suggestions from in front of the camera. Really, people love that."

Some last minute tips on getting the best picture possible. Not sure about you, but I need all the help I can get when it comes to photography. In fact, becoming a better photographer with my iPhone as well as my point-and-shoot is on my list of resolutions for the next year.

Need Some FaceTime Help?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/apple/iph...The+Apple+Core)

"FaceTime is the compelling video telephony app for the iPhone 4. And as the millions of units are out in the hands of users, so come the annoyances and the tips. Here are a few about speeding up initiation, working behind a firewall and troubleshooting FaceTime after you've ported your number from another carrier."

Several helpful tips on using FaceTime successfully, as well as some solutions to problems that others have encountered. I haven't had much use for FaceTime to be honest, so I haven't run into any of these problems. How about you? Are you using FaceTime at all and if so, have you had problems?

iPad Tricks, The Ten Essential Ones

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 07:00 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5508399/10-essen...ad-tips--tricks

"Any idiot can use an iPad at a basic level. It's designed that way. But even still, there are things that you're just supposed to magically know-things no one ever necessarily tells you. So we're here to help."

I especially like being able to put 6 apps in the bottom tray.

Time to Clean out Your Mac?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/147...l?lsrc=rss_main

"Spring may be in the air, but if you've spent a long winter packing your Mac with applications, files, and folders, there's a good chance it could use a stern cleaning. These tips will help you do just that."

Good run down on some helpful tips to keep your Mac running in tip top condition. The simple ones, like getting rid of cables that you never use and emptying the trash are no brainers but I did like the tips on archiving and getting rid of duplicate entries in your address book for example. I'm sure there is something for everyone in this article.

Get the Most out of Gmail

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.businessinsider.com/how-...+Alley+Insider)

"Five years after launch, Google finally took Gmail out of Beta last summer. But make no mistake, Google continues to constantly update the product with new experimental features."

This article goes through some of the more obscure features of Gmail, such as "Wrong Bob" to alert you that you are sending the email to the wrong Bob in your address book, or "Mail Goggles" that requires you to complete simple math problems before actually sending the email to the recipient so that late night email writing campaign doesn't create a disaster.

Time For The Genius Bar? Here Are Some Tips..

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Articles & Resources" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/140...l?lsrc=rss_main

"If you work your way through the quick fixes and my other troubleshooting suggestions without success, you'll exhaust your patience. This can easily happen if your Mac's problem lies with its hardware-in most cases, you can't do those repairs yourself. More rarely, you might have a software problem that you can't figure out, despite your best efforts. In either case, the time has arrived for a trip to the Genius Bar."

Just a few tips, mostly basic stuff such as make an appointment and check your warranty, but it never hurts to be prepared. The big one though is make sure its an Apple problem, not a third-party problem. But if you are in doubt, bring it in and if it isn't an Apple problem, they can direct you to the right place.

Helpful Tips for Jailbreakers

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 10:00 AM

http://theappleblog.com/2009/03/11/...u-need-to-know/

"So you've just jailbroken your iPhone. Congratulations! Your iPhone life is about to improve in so many ways. Be sure to follow our Jailbreak series to get the most out of jailbreaking your iPhone."

If you want to be a jailbreaker, this isn't bad information to at least read through. I'm not brave enough to do it to mine, or even mess with my Apple TV (I have been called a coward about it too!). I know, all in good fun :-). And while I may get up the courage to do it to my Apple TV, don't think I will go there with my iPhone, I count on it pretty much every day and don't want to take the chance on messing it up. Besides, I have all my applications moved around just where I want them!
