FaceTime In-Flight

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 12:00 PM

"This video shows you that Apple's FaceTime video chat works over in-flight Wi-Fi -- a huge deal to business travellers, we suspect."

The quality isn't all that bad, but I wonder if more and more start using this if the airlines start restricting it due to bandwidth usage? I'm not all that familiar with in-flight internet access since I hardly ever fly but I'm curious about it, does anyone out there use it and if so, what do you think the odds are about restrictions in the future if this becomes widely used?

Australian Airline Company Jetstar Testing iPads for In-Flight Entertainment

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/06/04/in-f...w-cost-airline/

"A couple of weeks ago we told you about a company, Bluebox Avionics, that was prepping iPads for use as inflight entertainment on airliners. Today we've heard that a low-cost airline down under, Jetstar, is launching a two-week trial at the end of this month, on flights longer than 90 minutes, to determine how iPads fare when trying to keep passengers entertained."

If you are flying Jetstar, you will be able to rent an iPad for $10.00 AUD, which is about $8.40 USD. The iPads will be loaded with a variety of entertainment choices such as movies, TV shows, books, games, etc. I'll be interested to see just how popular these are with customers. I'd be willing to rent one if I was flying with them. That is if I didn't have my own iPad.

Speaking of Boarding Passes and the iPhone...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 08:00 AM

"Alright, lets pat the pockets and run through the mental checklist one last time before security: Passport? Check, front pocket. Headphones? Definitely in your backpack. Boarding pass? Uh oh. Where'd that boarding pass go?"

This story seems so appropriate considering the previous one about Virgin America. Trinity Mobile is one of the leaders in the mobile ticketing area, and they announced in the last couple days a 1200% increase in usage of their mobile boarding pass from 2008 to 2009. In 2008 there were 50,000 users and in 2009 Trinity Mobile hit the 600,000 mark. In 2010 Jupiter Research says that over 2 billion mobile boarding passes will be issued. I can see why, how handy would this be?

Free In-Flight Wi-Fi From Google and Virgin America

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/143...ss_products_mac

"Virgin America and Google are teaming up to make holiday traveling more bearable. The search giant is subsidizing in-flight Wi-Fi service on the airline for the holiday season, from November 10 through January 15."

The normal price for the in-flight internet is $5.95 to $12.95 USD per laptop, or 5.95 to $7.95 USD for handheld devices, cost depending on the length of the flight. So if you fly during this period, and you may want to fly Virgin because of some of the great deals, you get free Wi-Fi courtesy of Google and Virgin America. You can get more info on the offer from Google, or more info on the in-flight Wi-Fi by visiting the Virgin America site.

Singapore Airlines announced the first-ever flights featuring iPod and iPhone connectivity on KrisWorld starting this week on its newly reconfigured, all-Business Class Airbus A340-500 flights between New York and Singapore, and between Los Angeles and Singapore from August."Singapore Airlines announced the first-ever flights featuring iPod and iPhone connectivity on KrisWorld starting this week on its newly reconfigured, all-Business Class Airbus A340-500 flights between New York and Singapore, and between Los Angeles and Singapore from August."

Not sure when I will ever get the chance to try out the new entertainment system but it sure sounds slick. Each seat has a 15.4-inch LCD screen and noise-cancellation headphones to go along with the iPod/iPhone connectivity. That is the way to travel.
