Learn About and Purchase Art With Art Circles for iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:19 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...=rss_everything

"I have a friend who is all about art. When she talks about any subject dealing with art she borders on pretentiousness as she slings about the names of different artists (living or dead), the people she's met, her near-fame, and so on."

If you want to be in the know, this free app called Art Circles fits the bill. This app covers all kinds of art so you can be "in the know" about a wide variety of artwork. And not only can you share the art you like via email and Facebook, you can also buy the art you like via the app. The coolest thing is you can actually put the artwork on a photo of the wall you are thinking of using and you can see how it would look.

Another Option for 5GB of Free Online Storage

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.businessinsider.com/drop...+Alley+Insider)

"Dropbox is dead simple for syncing files across your computers, but doesn't offer much in the way of customization or advanced features."

Signup couldn't be easier, and it gives you some flexibility and customization about what you want to sync from your computer. You can also keep files in sync across various devices. Free storage is always a good thing and they also offer reasonable storage rates should you need more than 5GB. But remember that you should also keep a stored copy that you can access in case the online version gets lost. Stranger things have happened. You can check it out here.

Free Wi-Fi From Skype

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 02:00 PM

http://mashable.com/2011/12/19/skyp...able+(Mashable)

"‘Tis the season for stressful airport experiences, and Skype wants to make sure you at least have Wi-Fi as you brave crowded security lines and delayed flights."

And in the spirit of giving, Skype will be running a promotion starting Wednesday that gives travelers free Wi-Fi access and over 50 US airports. All you need is a Skype account, then log in at any of the airports that are participating and you have free Wi-Fi. This ends on December 27th 2011 but is certainly going to be handy for those traveling through the Christmas holidays.

50GB Free Storage for iOS Devices? Heck Yea!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 PM

http://blog.box.net/2011/10/12/were...torage-box50gb/

"As evidenced by the overwhelming crowds during past iPhone and iPad launches, it's clear that our lives revolve around mobile. That's why we're happy to announce that we're giving away 50 GB of free storage to anyone who uses a Box Personal account on an iOS device."

The folks over at box.net are giving you 50GB to use with your iOS device, and you can read all about it here. Well, that is if you can get through, because, as you might have guessed, the servers are working overtime and it might take several tries. So if you can't get through just yet, the basics are as follows:

  • Go to iTunes and download the box.net application;
  • Wait until midnight tonight (I'm guessing whatever time zone you are in);
  • Log in to your account or register for a new one via the app.

That's pretty much it! You will get 50GB of storage free, your upload size limit increases to 100Gb from 25GB and it will allow you to stream content using AirPlay.

Instacam Free for Limited Time

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.iphoneography.com/journa...-instagram.html

"Instacam from Taplayer [the same developer behind TtV Camera and TtV Photo Studio], is a new and alternative square camera app, that provides realtime vintage and retro filter effects, that is aimed at, and suited to Instagram users, and for a very limited time, is available for FREE."

Who knows how long it's free, but it is as of a couple minutes ago. Another photo altering app along the lines of Instagram, so worth trying out for this price isn't it? [link]

Free eBooks From Apple and Starbucks

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:22 AM

http://gigaom.com/apple/apple-adds-...(GigaOM:+Apple)

"Apple loves giving Starbucks customers free stuff. This week it introduced an e-book Pick of the Week to go along with the free song and app of the week programs it already has in place. Books can be redeemed through Apple iBookstore, for use with iBooks on iOS devices."

The book is normally $12.99 USD so not a bad free gift. Bonus if it's readable. Add this to the free songs and apps, makes you want to go into Starbucks even more doesn't it? Who cares about coffee! Well, I do actually, this is just a nice enhancement to it though.

New Girl Free on iTunes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 01:30 PM

http://www.gadgetell.com/technology...elevision-show/

"Fox is trying a new strategy to gain a following for its upcoming sitcom New Girl. The show will debut on Fox Tuesday September 20, but the pilot episode is available to download right now for free on iTunes."

New Girl looks like a pretty funny show, if the previews are any indication. And you can go to iTunes right now and download the pilot episode for free. You can also get the preview of episode one. I hope others follow the lead.

Normally $5.99 USD so this is a great deal.

Free Apps from Starbucks

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/starbucks-...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"Despite Steve Jobs' crank call to one Seattle-based store for 4,000 lattes during the 2007 MacWorld Expo, Starbucks remains an Apple friend - holding a number of promotions that offer free iTunes downloads. The latest will give you a free iPhone app every time you get your caffeine fix."

Along the same lines as their free iTunes download for music, now you can get a free app for your "Pick of the Week" when you go into Starbucks. Look at the counter for the cards listing the app and redeem to get yours. This week is a very handy app called Shazam Encore, which I use pretty much every day. Normally $5.99 USD in the iTunes store, you get it free this week!

Watch ESPN on Your iOS Device

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/04/07/espn...u-do-just-that/

"ESPN is one of those big media producers that has done well on the App Store -- not only has the company released a number of successful apps for its various properties, but the content sells well on iTunes also. Now, the company is actually sending content directly to your iOS device."

The new app from ESPN is called "Watch ESPN" and if you connect it to your Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks or Verizon FiOS TV account you can watch ESPN on the go. I wish Dish would get with the program on this but perhaps soon.

Project Magazine's Latest iPad Issue is Free

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:00 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2011/04/...-magazine-free/

"The latest issue of Richard Branson's Project Magazine for iPad has been released and it's available to customers for absolutely free. This news came from a notification, which clarified it was no April Fools Day joke."

If you go to the iTunes store and check out the page for Project Magazine, it does indeed say it is free courtesy of American Express. I haven't checked this one out, have you? If so, what are your thoughts about this offering from Richard Branson?

AMEX Cardholders, Here is a Deal for You

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.ipodnn.com/articles/11/0...res.march.15th/

"As part of the general hoopla surrounding the formal launch of the Verizon iPhone today, American Express is offering all of their cardmembers an "instant rebate" on up to five songs from the iTunes Store starting today. The promotion runs through March 15th, and cardholders can choose any song they want without restrictions."

Just register your card at the promotion page, then you get five songs from iTunes. You have to buy them initially but then you automatically get the cost refunded. Not a bad deal if you have an AMEX.

Free WiFi When You Fly Certain Airlines, Sort Of...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 08:00 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5748547/facebook...t=Google+Reader

"Uh oh, our Jason Chen is going to be pissed when he sees this news. In-flight Wi-Fi's set to get even slower, now that Gogo is giving away free Facebook access on seven of the major airlines.

The airlines are Virgin America, United and American Airlines, Delta, AirTran, US Airways and Alaska Airlines, and through the month of February they are providing free Facebook access via Gogo. You can always pay for more, with the prices from $4.95 USD to $12.95 USD depending on the length of the flight. According to Gogo, Facebook is their most visited sight thus the tie-in with this promotion. Interesting factoid from Gogo: only 7% to 10% of all passengers on WiFi equipped planes use the WiFi service, so they certainly have room for expansion of their customer base. Do you use the WiFi when on flights?

Buy Portal 2 for PS3, Get PC or Mac Version Free

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.gamertell.com/gaming/com...ws-valve-steam/

"If you're going to buy Portal 2, then buy it for the PS3. Well, if you own a PS3, then buy the version for that system. If you do, then you get an extra version of Portal 2 for your computer! Valve is doing it to promote PS3 Steamworks' support for the game, since Portal 2 is the first one to actually offer it."

If I had a PS3 it might be something I'd be interested in, as I really enjoyed Portal. The nice thing is the PS3 version will also allow multiplayer with the PC and Mac versions, and vice versa of course. The game itself won't be on sale until April 19th, 2011, and will retail for $59.99 USD for the PS3 version. The PC version will be $49.99 USD. Mark your calendars!

Enjoy Madden NFL 11 For Free, But Only Up to a Point

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 PM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2011/01/...ree-huge-catch/

"Ahead of this weekend's NFL league championship games, EA Sports is offering us an interesting gift. For a limited time, you can download and play Madden NFL 11 for the iPhone/iPod touch for free."

This free version [link] lets you play for a quarter, Saints against the Colts, but that is it. If you want the full featured game [affiliate link] you will still have to fork out $4.99 USD. The value in this is that it gets the game to someone testing the waters to see if they like the game well enough to buy it. I know some would argue it's a waste but it doesn't appear that EA Sports thinks so, and they have been pretty successful.

Free Books on Your iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...s_on_your_ipad/

"You'll have to pay for the latest and greatest books at the iBookstore, Amazon, and elsewhere. But there are literally millions of free eBooks and documents available on the Internet, already formatted for your iPad - if you know where to find them."

Several good sources here, along with the process to use to actually get them on your iPad. Once I've used is Amazon.com since they actually have a "free book collection" link on their Kindle site. Worth the read if you are interested in getting some free books and adding some resources to your Internet toolbox.

Happy Anniversary Return to Mysterious Island! Bonus: You Get the Gift!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:35 PM

http://www.appletell.com/apple/comm...etell+Appletell

"Today is the sixth anniversary of the popular Return to Mysterious Island game available for Mac and iOS. What does that mean for yourselves? Well, naturally, the creators of Return to Mysterious Island want everyone to join in with the birthday celebrations, so they're offering the full iPad version of the game for free. You'll need to hurry though, because once the clock strikes midnight, it'll return to full price."

Not a bad deal at all, especially if you like to play games on your iPad. I haven't played this game on mine but it's free so I'm going to give it a try. Here is the link.
