AT&T Doesn't Make Same Mistake as Verizon

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/116...l#lsrc.rss_main

"When Verizon Wireless announced its new shared-data plans in June, it should have enjoyed a big advantage over its arch-rival, AT&T."

Pooling data is a great idea, and one that many wanted, but they didn't want to be forced into it as Verizon was planning to do. AT&T at least is making their pooling plans optional. Choice is always better, but only if it is truly your choice! What are your thoughts on this misstep on Verizon's part and the resulting plans from AT&T?

Scanner Pro Updated for iCloud Syncing

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:08 PM

http://readdle.com/

"The latest version, Scanner Pro 4.1, brings a completely new interface to the iPhone, focusing on the most important things to make it more streamlined and intuitive."

And now with iCloud syncing, you can see the same items on your iPhone or iPad. Great update to this handy application. I find myself using this at least once a day to contribute to my goal of going paperless. Check it out in the iTunes store.

Get A Secure Line On Your iPhone With Silent Circle

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.technologyreview.com/new...om-your-iphone/

"Anytime you use your phone to make a call or send an e-mail or text message, there's a chance it will be intercepted by someone who has access-legal or otherwise-to your providers' servers."

An upcoming app from the guy that created PGP will get you a secure line so your security fears won't exacerbate your paranoia. I'm not paranoid much myself, but it would be nice to have the ability to have a secure line. You can find out more at Silent Circle. But only if no one is watching...

iMovie Trailers on the iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.maclife.com/article/howt...ler_imovie_ipad

"If you're like us, you return from vacations and special events having filmed loads of video, with grand ambitions of one day compiling all your clips into brilliant home movies."

I love these step by step, quickie instructional articles, especially when it comes to programs that I've been meaning to use but haven't, such as iMovie on the iPad. It usually reinforces the credo "it's easier than it looks," every time I read one of these.

Just Landed Keeps You on Time

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.maclife.com/article/revi...t_landed_review

"We've all been there: Awaiting a loved one's arrival at the airport, only to discover that his/her flight is delayed. Never again fear such predicaments, because Just Landed has been cleared for landing on your iPhone."

Solid review from MacLife about this handy app.

Apple Releases a Podcast App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.imore.com/2012/06/27/sub...pp-iphone-ipad/

"Apple has just released their new Podcasts app for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. While it's not as feature-rich or complex as some other podcast apps on the App Store, if it's your first time using a podcast app, you may be wandering just how exactly to get started using it."

Good primer on how to use this universal app, in case you aren't familiar with podcasts. I've gotten away from listening to them myself, but that's only because my commute is a lot shorter. Do you still listen to podcasts? If so, have you tried this new app?

Tom Tom Set to Update Maps Every Day

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5921956/tomtom-t...very-single-day

"TomTom was already a big player in digital mapping, and then it went and signed up to work with Apple on the new iOS maps app."

One of those trickle down benefits from working with Apple is that anyone that has a Tom Tom service will benefit from updated maps, at no charge.

iBank for the iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:28 PM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...=rss_everything

"IGG Software announced the immediate availability of iBank for the iPad on Wednesday. The personal finance management app has previously been available for the Mac and iPhone, but now is available with an iPad-native interface."

This is one of the better financial apps if you want to have your banking on your iPhone as well as your Mac. And now it's even better that they have released a version for the iPad. It's available now for $14.99 USD.

Launch Center Pro is Certainly Worth Buying

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.iphonealley.com/applicat...-pro-app-review

"The newly released Launch Center Pro ($2.99) isn't a free update for owners of its unripe predecessor, and that did spark some ill-natured disapproval towards the respective developer. Regardless, that's no reason to simply brush the app off and not give it a go. The completely revamped, reimagined app ditches the previously-used list format and instead replaces it with a slick, more powerful interface geared towards optimal efficiency."

I had the original Launch Center, and used it up until Sunday when I deleted it and bought the pro. The difference is pretty amazing and well worth the $2.99 USD discounted price. I don't know when the pricing discount ends, but if you want an app that can manage multiple apps and activities, this might be just the thing. I love it. I basically have this icon on my main screen with my weather app and phone icon. I think I could actually make do with just this app icon on it though. The interface is great and very smooth to use. Read the review, it's worth checking out.

Google Offers on iPhone, But Only in the US

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

http://9to5mac.com/2012/06/19/googl...-for-u-s-users/

"Google just announced on the official Google Mobile Blog that it is releasing a Google Offers app for iPhone."

Ugh! Just what I need, another way to spend money with Google. It's not bad enough that I do it on my laptop, now they make it easy to do on my iPhone. I do like the location based offers though, and you can really get some good deals...just saying'. You can download it right now.

Bento 4 Released for iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:23 AM

http://www.technologytell.com/apple...etell+Appletell

"Bento has always been a pretty good app for the iPad, providing database functionality that's simplified from its FileMaker roots, but still manages to provide tools you'd otherwise need a dozen separate apps to achive. Bento 4 for iPad has now been updated with a streamlined interface, more tools, and access to the robust Bento Template Exchange."

The update includes 40 retina display ready themes, customizable templates if you don't want to use one of the hundreds of free templates you can link to and the additional view options of table, split and full screen. And to top it off all versions are on sale until the end of the month. Through July 31st you can get the iPad version for $4.99 USD and Bento version 4.1 for the Mac for $29.99 USD.

Camera Dot From Facebook

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/06/12/face...-is-now-camera/

"Remember the Camera app? No, not the one that ships with every iPhone, but the app that Facebook announced on May 24, 2012."

It's out now in the iTunes store, but it's called "Camera Dot." Seems like a silly name to me, and to find it in the iTunes App store you need to do a search for "Facebook Camera" to find it. Or you can just click here.

Amazon Cloud Player For iOS

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.imore.com/2012/06/12/ama...one-ipod-touch/

"Amazon's Cloud Player launched last year with iPhone compatibility conspicuously absent, but as of today, the iOS app has found its way to the smaller screen, giving users the ability to access their music stored in the cloud."

No longer do you have to rely on the mobile site for this, which is a good thing since that was pretty basic. That being said, I pretty much stick with iTunes and use their iTunes Match service for $25.00 USD per year, keeps it simple that way. If i want to get some deals from Amazon, I buy them there and just import into my iTunes. How do you handle music and your library?

Office 2 HD Updated to Allow Track Changes. Awesome!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/172013/off...s-and-comments/

"Many of you will have read the above headline and thought "Meh. Whatever." And yet here you are, still reading. Well, if you got this far, here's the reward. Office2 HD, the MS Office-compatible suite for the iPad, has just gotten support for Track Changes and comments."

This is actually great news! You can't do it on Pages, and I could have used this feature last week when we were proposing changes to our contract. It's available now for $7.99 USD in the iTunes store, so tell me why am I waiting for Microsoft to come out with Office for iPad? I guess I'm not!

Best iOS Calendar Alternative, Agenda, Updated

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.imore.com/2012/06/05/age...ne-ipad-review/

"Agenda is a beautiful alternative to the iPhone and iPad's built-in Calendar app by the great folks at App Savvy."

This really is a great calendar app, much better than the calendar app that comes with the iPhone. I don't switch out of using too many of the apps that come with iOS, but for calendar I made the switch to Agenda and haven't looked back. It's very clean looking and makes finding information easy. But don't take my word for it, you can read the iMore review here, or visit The Brooks Review and check out his opinion on it.

WWDC Schedules and App Released

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/05/29/appl...e-official-app/

"The few, the proud, the folks who are going to WWDC now have an idea of what sessions they can attend at this year's Apple Developer's Conference."

You can pickup the schedule here, and then head over to the App Store and get the official app here. Just make sure you are attending WWDC 2012 or the app won't work, since it requires an Apple ID and an attendee password. They keynote will be at 10:00 am on Monday June 11, and I'm sure will be streamed by several sites that day.

Use Reminders More Efficiently With These Tips

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/169797/bes...d-mac-ios-tips/

"Apple introduced Reminders alongside iOS 5 and Siri (for the iPhone 4S) this past October, and while the world wasn't exactly stunned, the app made an impression. The trick with any app, of course, is finding ways to use it efficiently."

That is always the case isn't it? Finding the best way to utilize what a program has to offer is key to getting the most out of it. I've tried out a number of reminder programs, and usually ended up going with iCal, that is until Apple came out with reminders and so I use them now, mainly due to the geographical reminders that you can set up. What app do you use to keep you organized?

Tweetbot Updated to Search Tweets by Location

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/05/24/twee...ased-searching/

"The 2.4 update to Tweetbot for iPhone and iPad adds a number of new features, but the biggest one is an updated search feature that gives users the chance to view tweets made nearby. You can change location to do searches in different areas."

Many changes but the search by location is the biggest. I switch between this and the Twitter app, still not sure which one I like best, what are your thoughts on the best Twitter client?

What Are Your Vacation Apps?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/0...nd-gets-around/

"Nearly every time I travel-whether it's for vacation or for work-people crawl out of the woodwork to ask me which iOS apps I use when on the road."

And now Jacqui Chan from Ars Technica answers that question with some of her must-have apps when traveling. Some I knew about, such as TripIt and Kayak, but there are some other options here too so worth the read. What apps do you like to use when traveling?

Axis App for iOS, From Yahoo

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.businessinsider.com/yaho...+Alley+Insider)

"Yahoo! announced last night the launch of its new app dubbed Axis, available for iPhone, iPad, and plug-ins that work with Firefox, Safari, or Chrome."

You can do everything from within the app, instead of having it switch you to the native Safari in iOS. And from what reviewers are saying it works pretty well. Worth trying out, since it's free.
