Find Your Files Using Found From the Mac App Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.cultofmac.com/171424/dow...k-air-giveaway/

"Even though we have this really cool internet technology thing called the "cloud" that stores all of our pictures, music, documents, videos, and anything else we want to throw at it, searching for stuff inside the cloud still sucks."

Not so much anymore now that Found has made it's way to the Mac App Store. The free app can search across multiple services to find your files. And if you head to the Cult of Mac site, you can enter a contest to win one of three Macbook Airs donated by Found. Even if you don't win the laptop, having this handy app makes you feel like a winner. Well, ok that might be going too far but it sure does simplify your searches!

http://www.cultofmac.com/160632/win...with-a-1tb-ssd/

"This is just totally sick. The guys over at Germany's Hardwrk have taken 16GB of DDR3 RAM and a 1TB Samsung 830 SATA III SSD bundled up in an SSD-RAID-0, slapped it into a 13-inch MacBook Pr running an Intel Core i7-2640M 2.8GHz chip."

This is sick, and in a good way. Leave a comment here to enter yourself in the contest to win this bad boy.

The Sweet Sound of Quality: Win a Set of $399 Audioengine A5+ Speakers

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 09:00 AM

http://audioengineusa.com/Store/Aud...5-Plus#overview

I may be selling these sites and working full time for HTC now, but who says I can't have a little more fun giving away a great prize before I go? Last week I posted about the new Audioengine A5+ powered desktop speakers; the generous folks at Audioengine have offered up a set of these new speakers for a contest. With dual inputs (3.5mm and RCA, the latter of which is easily converted to an addition 3.5mm input with a cable) and a USB charging port, the A5+ speakers are a great companion to an endless variety of devices: desktop computers, laptop computers, tablets, smartphones, and yes, even the humble Zune. Ringing in at $399 USD, these are high-quality speakers that I guarantee will blow you away.

How do you win this contest? Simply post a comment to this discussion thread (one entry per person) telling me what your current audio solution for speakers is and how the Audioengine A5+ speakers will be better. One winner will be randomly selected from amongst all the entries and they'll get to chose either a set of black or white A5+ speakers. Due to the size and weight of this prize, it will only be shipped within the continental USA. The contest will remain open until Friday the 28th at 12 PM mountain time (GMT -7).

Best of luck everyone, and I look forward to reading some interesting entries. :-)

UPDATE: The contest is now over, and the winner is ITforSmallBiz. Thanks to everyone for entering!

Vonage's Time to Call App: 15 Free Minutes, International Calling and a Free iPad 2!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:40 AM

Time to Call is a free app from Vonage, that lets you make phone calls (including international calls) from your iPhone or iPad 2 at very affordable rates. And as a bonus, they are giving you 15 minutes of calling time when you download the app using this link. The cool thing about this app is that it uses your iTunes account to pay for the minutes, so you don't have to mess around with calling cards or getting an operator involved. All you do is make the call and it will subtract the charges direct from your iTunes account. The rates are pretty reasonable too as outlined in the details below:

  • Pay per call and talk up to 15 minutes to 100 countries for $1.99 or less (not including taxes)
  • For an additional 90+ countries, talk up to 15 minutes for $2.99 to $9.99 (not including taxes)
  • Works on WiFi internationally, 3G in the US and Canada
  • FREE download - No need to be a Vonage home customer
  • LIMITED TIME OFFER: Download now and call up to 15 minutes for FREE.

If you go to the Vonage site, you can easily find out how much your 15 minutes of calling time will be as it is based on the country you are calling. Simply select the country from the drop down list and it gives you the cost in US Dollars. Pretty simple. For example, calling Argentina will set you back $1.99 USD for 15 minutes of calling time, of course that is not including the 15 free minutes you get just for downloading the app. And make sure to read on to find out how to win an iPad 2 from Vonage as part of their promotion for the new app.

New York City Mobile App Contest

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 02:15 PM

http://mashable.com/2011/07/12/mta-app-contest/

"The past two years, New York City has hosted contests for mobile apps that use city data. Now New York State's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is launching a similar contest of its own."

According to the contest page, it is pretty much open to any application in any language that will run on laptops, desktops, mobile devices, etc. The prizes are nothing to sneeze at, with $5,000.00 USD as the top prize (along with some Apple gear so they might be biased a bit towards iOS). So if you want to get in on it, head over to the contest page and enter.

10 Billion Downloads Achieved! Winner Crowned and No, It Isn't Me!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._app_store.html

"Apple on Saturday announced that its iOS App Store for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad has reached the milestone of 10 billion downloads since its launch in 2008."

The contest started on January 14th this year, and ended over this past weekend, by someone in the UK downloading a free app called "Paper Glider." This past year the App Store had over 7 billion downloads, which far surpassed it's first year total of 1.5 billion.

And if you are curious about what 10 billion represents, other than a huge number of apps in a short time, you can read some examples in this article from Business Insider. On another note related to this milestone, check out the story on how the winner almost wasn't.

Need a Reminder for the Countdown?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/01/19/webs...0-billion-apps/

"Is that count down or count up? In either case, visit 10billionapps.com for an unofficial countdown to the likely moment that the 10 billionth app will be downloaded from Apple's App Store. The site is maintained in part by Top Drawer Apps, and features a "guesstimate" as to when the 10 billionth app will be downloaded, based on the current sales rates, among other things."

The time frame above was as of 4:30 pm Pacific time on Wednesday, January 19th. If you want a more current time table, you can visit the 10billionapps.com website. Then again, perhaps I should delete this post since I entered this contest also. Naw, the more the merrier right? Good luck if you did enter it, and if you haven't, why not? Someone has to win...

App Store Approaching 10 Billionth App Download

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.apple.com/itunes/10-bill...-app-countdown/

"As of today, nearly 10 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store worldwide. Which is almost as amazing as the apps themselves. So we want to say thanks. Download the 10 billionth app, and you could win a US $10,000 iTunes Gift Card. Just visit the App Store, and download what could be your best app yet."

The figure above was taken at about 10:58am Pacific time, and at the rate of 1,147,333 apps per hour (according to Cult of Mac), the prediction is early Friday morning this week for the 10 billionth download. If you don't want to download an app, fear not as you can enter simply by filling out this form at Apple (you can enter up to 25 times per day too). Good luck!

Win a Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z Worth $1308 USD!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 02:00 PM

I'm a couple days late getting this contest launched - things have been hectic - but here we go! I have a top-spec Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z to give away to one lucky Thoughts Media reader/YouTube viewer.

Here are the three things you have to do to be entered in this contest:

  1. Subscribe to our YouTube channel
  2. Post a comment on the YouTube contest video telling me how/where you'd use this computer. Don't post the comment here on Digital Home Thoughts though, only on the YouTube video.
  3. Favorite the contest video on YouTube (instructions how are in the video)

That's it! One entry per person, and the contest closes at 5 PM GMT -7 on December 13th, 2010. Good luck everyone - the winner will be chosen randomly from amongst all the comments posted. The winner will be contacted via YouTube direct message, and will have 48 hours to respond back to me to claim their prize. If the winner hasn't fulfilled all three of the requirements above, I'll pick someone else.

Please note: due to shipping constraints, this contest is open to people in North America only. You guys know I always try to do world-wide contests, but this is a physically BIG prize so as you can imagine shipping world-wide would be a bit problematic.

Remember this contest is part of a much bigger contest with 20 other sites, so be sure to check out the other contests that are happening right now!

Help Me Win $1250 for Kids Who Need It This Christmas

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Off Topic" @ 03:00 PM

Hi everyone! I need your help to win an unboxing contest that Best Buy is running on Facebook, and it’s for a good cause. Since I do a lot of those, I thought hey, why not enter? There are two grand prizes of $2500 CAD each, awarded as Best Buy gift cards. Since we’re coming up on Christmas, sharing the grand prize if I win makes sense – so I’ve publicly committed to donating half of the prize ($1250) to kids involved with Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Canada. My mother works for that organization, and I’ve seen first hand the needs that some of these families have. She works with the in-school mentoring program, which pairs younger kids with senior citizen mentors. Apparently the kids are Nintendo Wii-crazy, and it’s an activity the seniors and kids can do together, so I think what I’ll do is buy as many Nintendo Wii bundles as I can with $1250 (it should be at least five of them).

I'd really appreciate the support of the Thoughts Media community, because - and I'll be blunt here - Twitter is such a noisy medium that every though yesterday the message about this contest went out to over 5000 people from three different people, nearly zero votes came as a result of it. I'm currently #3 in votes, but I could easily take a dominating lead if even 20% of you reading this decided to act. Please help!

Here’s how you can help me, and the kids, win – oh, and enter to win a $150 gift card yourself!

  1. Log into Facebook, and visit the Best Buy Unboxing Day Contest Site. Click Allow when the app asks for your permission. I’ve noticed there’s a weird bug with Internet Explorer 8 where it loops the process for almost a minute, so you may want to use Firefox or Chrome if you run into trouble.
  2. Find my Samsung Focus video (see above) and click on it, then click on Vote in the window that pops up. You’ll need to fill out a little form; if you live outside Canada and don't qualify for the gift card, just put in whatever bogus information you want.
  3. Return to that contest site every day to vote – you can vote once every day up until December 31st.

The winners will be announced January 3rd, 2011, and if I win, I’ll announce it here and provide details and photos of the Wii’s I purchase.

(And for the Windows Phone Thoughts readers, I'll be doing a "real" unboxing of the Focus - that was just a simplified, quick version. I've got some serious concerns about the screen...).
