Orange Telecom Augmented Reality With the iPhone

"We've seen all sorts of augmented reality applications for mobile devices, with varying degrees of usability, but this one, created for Orange Telecom, definitely takes the cake when it comes to originality and craziness."

This is really wild, and very clever! It's magical, like Christmas.

Use Augmented Reality to Find Your Car

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 09:00 AM

"There have been a lot of apps in the App Store for helping you find where you parked your car, but now there's one that shows you where it is with the awesomeness of augmented reality."

This is an interesting use of the Augmented Reality feature, but not sure how well it would work in a parking garage. Since you have to use the GPS, I'm guessing open lots work best. The results they achieved were close but not exact, but as long as it gets you in the general area I suppose that is good enough. I find taking a picture of the location if they use markers for the parking areas works pretty well, but if they don't this might come in handy for those that need the help. I have to be honest though, I haven't lost my car yet no matter the size of the parking lot.

Points of Interest With the Bionic Eye

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 12:00 PM

"Bored with the same old view of reality? Turns out there's an app for that. Now you can simply point your iPhone's camera at an area, and the Bionic Eye app will show you points of interest, subway or bus stops, and other pertinent information about your world around you."

This is the first "official" augmented reality app in the iTunes store, and while it does work with the iPod Touch, to get the cool view feature you need to have a camera on your device. If you don't, or it is an older iPhone without GPS, it will display the locations on a map. Other apps have unofficially made use of the augmented reality feature, namely Yelp, but this is the first approved app using the feature.

Yelp 3.0 With Augmented Reality

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.iphonealley.com/news/yel...ity-easter-egg?

"Yelp is a free service for finding information and customer reviews on local businesses like bars and restaurants by searching or using location services."

And as of the end of last week, they have updated the app to version 3.0. This actually is a handy app if you can get the right group of users on your friends list, people that actually review the businesses. Surprisingly enough, even in an area like mine I have found at least 6 or so people that are pretty prolific, so I get some good info. And for iPhone 3GS users, it has a newly added "augmented reality" feature using a button called a "monacle" that overlays local businesses on your iPhone screen based on your location. I have yet to get this feature to work on mine however.
