Citibank Fixes the Security Hole in Their Banking App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 12:47 PM

"Citibank has fixed a flaw in its iPhone app that was inadvertently storing customer account data on the mobile devices, the company said on Monday."

There is no problem here, move along. Well, there isn't a problem now, that is. Prior to Monday, they apparently had a glitch in their banking app, which caused some user information to be saved inside the app. This could have been exploited if it fell into the wrong hands. Namely, the hands of a hacker. So, if you are a customer you should have already been mailed a letter and advised...hopefully.

Chase Adds Check Deposit Via iPhone to Their App

"If anyone needs proof that we're all living in the future, look no further than the latest update to the Chase Mobile iPhone app, which now allows not only person-to-person QuickPay to any e-mail address, but also the ability to make a check deposit right from your handset -- without ever stepping foot inside your local branch."

I was able to use this today, and it does work pretty well. Just make sure the image isn't blurry and it will let you deposit your checks right from your iPhone. And if you do have too much coffee prior to attempting this, have no fear as the app makes it easy to retake the photo and try again. Great update to this already handy application. Well, handy if you have a Chase account.

USAA Customer? Deposit Your Check Via iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 07:00 AM

"Getting a step closer to completely paperless banking, some customers of USAA will be able to deposit checks using their iPhones. An updated version of the bank's mobile app out this week accepts checks that have been photographed with the iPhone."

Basically, it boils down to taking a picture of the front and the back, after it is signed of course, and sending the image via this app. This is only for the 60% or so of the USAA customers that have credit along with insurance though the bank, but since most of the clients are military it might be quite handy for them. I personally think direct deposit is the way to go but having options is always a plus.

Mobile Banking and iPhone a Pretty Good Match

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 10:00 AM

"You may not want to learn how much smaller your bank account has gotten. But banks are making it easier than ever for consumers to access account information on their mobile devices."

Bank of America and Chase are a couple banks that have specific apps for free in the iTunes store, but even those without apps are getting into the mobile banking scene. I use Wells Fargo as well as Washington Mutual (yes they are both still in business) and both have mobile interfaces with custom icons that work very well with the iPhone. They make it very easy to transfer funds and check balances among other things; much more usable than using SMS to get information. The iPhone, for me, has become very indispensable when it comes to my banking needs.
