Free Books on Your iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

"You'll have to pay for the latest and greatest books at the iBookstore, Amazon, and elsewhere. But there are literally millions of free eBooks and documents available on the Internet, already formatted for your iPad - if you know where to find them."

Several good sources here, along with the process to use to actually get them on your iPad. Once I've used is Amazon.com since they actually have a "free book collection" link on their Kindle site. Worth the read if you are interested in getting some free books and adding some resources to your Internet toolbox.

Textbooks and the iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:00 AM

"The most complicated form in print media is the textbook," Josh Koppel of ScrollMotion explained to me. 'You have a 1,000-page math text with 10,000 more pages of homework assignments. You've got the graphic side, the text side, notation, assessment, remediation. And we need to make this all live well digitally without being subtractive.'"

I've been pretty vocal in the past about loving the idea and cost savings of having text books available on a device, be it a laptop or tablet or iPad, so I'm pretty happy about this consortium of publishers that is getting together to produce products for the iPad. The consortium is using a company called ScrollMotion to get it done, and from the story line it appears due to the limitations of the device, they won't be coming anytime soon to the Kindle. Despite it being great for reading, it has too many limitations for it to be a viable solution for the consortium, namely the "pedagogic reading" that is required in higher learning institutions. This is basically the type of reading required when you are actually studying a topic and not reading for enjoyment. Interesting article and I hope they are a success, but I also hope that they don't think they can continue to charge the exorbitant prices for textbooks that they have charged in the past. That would truly be a travesty!

Are You a Book Lover? There's An App For That Too

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:00 AM

"Electric Pocket released BookLover on Wednesday, an iPhone application that allows you to keep track of the books you've recently read and remind yourself of ones that you'd like to read."

Cool little program, to keep track of your books and share what you have read, with the familiar iBook screen. Its a $0.99 USD app available in iTunes [iTunes link].

Perseus Books Signs With Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

"Despite threats from Amazon that it will stop selling the independent publisher's books if they sign on with Apple's iBookstore, Perseus Books Group, the largest independent publisher, has signed a deal with Apple."

Zagat and Workman Press also signed deals, so they certainly aren't responding favorably to pressure from Amazon to refrain from signing with Apple. There are are still several that haven't signed deals, but no matter (at least for me) since Amazon is set to come through with a Kindle App for the iPad, along with Barnes & Noble.
