CES 2011: Visteon Dashboard Concept Using an iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

http://translogic.aolautos.com/2011...rd-has-arrived/

"Within hours of the first batch of iPads arriving on customers' doorsteps, someone had stuck Apple's wunder-tablet into their car's dashboard. The rationale for the installation was flimsy, but if you're looking for a mildly inexpensive touchscreen for your car, you could do worse to play a few videos and stream some tunes. Visteon, however, has different plans."

Although this is a fake dash, I'm really liking the concept they are exploring. Basically, since they hook into the CAN-Bus of whatever car is modified, they can control all aspects of it from the iPad, such as navigation, climate control, etc. The nice part is once you are done driving just take it out and use it as an iPad. I'm assuming it would be fully charged! No word yet on which automobiles they are planning to use this for, but we should be finding out later this year.

CES 2011: ClamCase for iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

"ClamCase converts iPad to laptop. From CES, a first hands-on look at the new iPad shell case/keyboard combo."

I don't know if you dislike slide show sites as much as I do, but I really had to go through this to see the images because this product really does interest me. I really like the fact that it is so flexible to use, and the keypad section can actually be bent backwards to set this up as a stand, or even folded completely over so you can use the iPad as it was intended. Very slick device and it appears to work as intended. What are your thoughts, does something like this interest you for your iPad?

Don't Worry Apple Fanboys, CES Has Something For You Too

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Talk" @ 03:13 PM

http://gigaom.com/apple/the-apple-l...(GigaOM:+Apple)

"Thursday, Jan. 6 marks the beginning of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Unlike many of its biggest rivals, Apple doesn't play the CES game. So what does the show have to offer the average Apple user? At least two things: accessories and a sense of superiority."

A list of several items that might interest those of us in the Apple camp, even if Apple isn't going to really be on display at CES. One that caught my eye was the SpiderPodium from Breffo, an interesting looking stand for your iPad that reminds me of the Joby line of products. Also, I'm interested in what MiLi comes up with for Apple products. I love their aesthetic and they are supposed to be bringing an iPad dock/charger set up that will let you hook up your iPad to any HD TV. I'm not sure about you, but I always look forward to CES, in spite of the fact that Apple doesn't participate. And as far as that sense of superiority? I just want stuff to work with minimal interference from me, that's why I usually defer to Apple products, but I have been known to buy non-Apple products from time to time. What are your thoughts on CES and what do you hope to see from there?

Some CES Navigation Help From Audi and Navigon

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:46 PM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2011/01/...e-navigons-app/

"Navigon and Audi have teamed up to offer CES 2011 goers a free and convenient way to navigate the streets of Las Vegas."

It's a free app [link] and comes with a lot of features, that even if you weren't going to CES you would find useful in Las Vegas. The bonus is that it comes with data for the entire state of Nevada, not just Las Vegas. But if you are in Las Vegas, it offers turn-by-turn, weather conditions, parking and even pedestrian mode if you are walking and need some guidance. It's based on the Navigon app MobileNavigator, and obviously has some branding you need to put up with since Audi is sponsoring it.

Rumor: Apple to Exhibit at CES in 2010?

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...es_in_2010.html

"On the heels of announcing its plans to bail on Macworld Expo next year, Apple will be instead attending the more generic Consumer Electronics Show in 2010, according to sources familiar with the matter. The blogosphere has been passionately arguing both for and against an Apple appearance at CES, which is held in Las Vegas rather than Macworld Expo's San Francisco. Sources close to the company have indicated to AppleInsider that the move is a done deal, a remarkable turn of events given that CES has long been dominated by Microsoft's product announcements issued in keynotes delivered by Bill Gates and now by CEO Steve Ballmer."

If this is true, then Apple has pretty much embraced their new identity as a consumer electronics brand. It won't take long to know if this one is true, but I sure as hell hope it isn't because CES is a pain in the you-know-what for average people to attend. I've only done it once, and it was utter and complete chaos, not to mention mostly boring garbage. I'm sure Apple would have one of those gigantic setups like Microsoft, Intel, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony have had for years, but it just wouldn't be the same for attendees. The flip side, of course, is that it would be much easier for me to go to (I can always make an excuse for a trip to Vegas!).
