More on iOS 5, The Contacts App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/71621/ios-5-...le-to-contacts/

"Another interesting discovery related to the Contacts app in iOS 5. You can now, if you want, add ‘related people' to your contact cards. The Related People field is disabled by default so you add it first by tapping the Add Field option in the contact card editing interface. Choosing Related People at the bottom lets you pick among a dozen pre-populated labels such as mother, father, parent, brother, sister, child, friend, spouse, partner, assistant, manager and other."

More and more tidbits are coming out about iOS 5 as people delve further into it. This would be a pretty slick feature if you could then use iMessage to send messages to groups such as "family" or any other group label within contacts.

Pogue Gives Some iPhone Tips

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:00 AM

"It seems as if Apple dodged a bullet. Ever since the Steve Jobs press conference a couple of weeks ago, in which Apple offered free carrying-case bumpers (or full refunds) to anyone whose iPhone 4 exhibited the 'signal drops when you hold the phone a certain way' problem, the jeering and mockery online seems to have gone into hibernation."

Some simple but overlooked tips for using your iPhone 4. I especially like the changes to the combined contacts list.

Gmail Updated, Will You Give Them Another Shot?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:06 PM

http://www.macworld.com/article/153...l?lsrc=rss_main

"Google will roll out on Tuesday enhancements to Gmail's contacts manager, which the company acknowledges has been traditionally the webmail service's weakest link."

This update won't be noticeable on the Google Apps suite until later, but if you use an individual Gmail account you will see the changes. Google says they took into account the feedback and complaints they received about previous problems with the contact manager and want users to "give us another try." You can read more about the changes on their blog. What problems, if any, did you have if you used Gmail? Are you willing to give it another try? I use MobileMe to sync my contacts but I do like the Google Cal sync better so that is what I use for calendars. I'm on the fence on this one, how about you?

Yet Another Update from Apple on Tuesday

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/150...l?lsrc=rss_main

"MobileMe galleries are kind of like exclusive showcases, or fancy private Flickr pages. There's no way to search, so unless you know someone's MoblieMe username, it's hard to figure out if your friends even have one."

And now Apple has made it a whole lot easier with this update to add galleries from your friends. This is a free app, and if you have MobileMe, its a nice way to check out the photos. This update adds a feature called "Contacts" so you can add in galleries from your friends, by searching through your iPhone or iPod Touch contacts list for MobileMe members, and then letting you choose which ones you want to add. Entering manually is still an option, and you can find more about this update at Apple.

MobileMe and Google Maps Integration for Contacts

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/140...l?lsrc=rss_news

"Over the last couple of months, MobileMe has gotten faster and shinier, gained that promised file-sharing feature, and, arguably, evolved into an integral service. Apple announced many of these updates and fixes on its MobileMe News blog, and now it's highlighting one of MobileMe's clever, albeit unsung, features: Google Maps integration."

I have no idea how long its been working, but the MobileMe blog came out with an article on it about 3 days ago. It actually does work pretty slick. When you get the popup window, you can view the map in a variety of ways, however you can't use the zoom feature, yet anyway. But if you do want to zoom in, clicking on the bottom of the map at the "Open in Google Maps" will open up the map in, where else, Google Maps.

Over the Air Sync With Google

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/138...html?lsrc=mwnws

"On Monday, Google announced that it'd now be offering over-the-air synchronization of Google contacts and calendars with the iPhone, iPod touch, Windows Mobile-based phones, and SyncML-compatible devices."

If you don't have Mobile Me, and have been syncing your iPhone with your Google Calendar the old school way via direct connection with your computer, this might be a good option for you. It is a beta, and currently only allows syncing contacts and calendars, so your mail still has to be handled separately via IMAP or POP. Also, there are known limitations with the iPhone so Google has created a site that lists them.

I have Mobile Me, have for years, and I've finally gotten it to where it works pretty well for me so I won't be changing it up by switching. However, if I didn't have Mobile Me and wanted to wirelessly sync my contacts and calendars, I would probably give this a try.
