Mobile Devices on a Plane Revisited: Yea or Nay?

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:00 PM

http://articles.cnn.com/2012-08-27/...line-passengers

"Will the familiar warning for airline passengers to "discontinue the use of all portable electronic devices" become a relic of the past?

Perhaps."

Every so often the FAA reviews its policies limiting mobile device usage on airplanes. They're at it again, but it must be mentioned that this particular study does not include the use of mobile phones while in flight - that's the FCC's domain. The FAA claims (in a study performed "last year") that they have 75 documented cases of consumer (passenger) electronic devices interfering with on-board systems, and the new study group aims to either confirm or debunk the current conventional wisdom that mobile devices can interfere with instruments, specifically during takeoff and landing. Skeptics point to the fact that tablets and laptops may be used by the crew, during these critical times, but not used by passengers. The study goal is to determine the what, where, when and why for the existing rules and regulations. While I do think that the rules are a bit one-sided in favor of the airlines, I'm not really that inconvenienced by having to turn off my laptop/phone/tablet during takeoff and landing. Safety trumps convenience in my opinion. How about you?

FAA Approves iPad For Use in Pilot Cabin

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:00 PM

"The Federal Aviation Administration has certified Apple's iPad for use in pilot cabins. Pilots won't be playing Angry Birds: The approval paves the way to replacing some forty pounds worth of dead trees in pilot bags with shiny apps."

I'm sure these pilots will be happy to lose the large carry bags full of maps, charts, etc. but it does bring up another question. If they are allowing iPads in the cabin, and I'm assuming at any stage of the trip, then how are they going to get around the people that will be complaining when they are told to put away their electronic devices because of interference they supposedly cause? I for one doubt they will even care about it and continue with this policy. What are your thoughts?

Jepp Charts Approved as Alternative to Paper Charts by FAA

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/13/ipad...nic-flight-bag/

"Jeppesen, the company that produces most of the paper and electronic "Jepp charts" used by pilots for preflight planning and inflight navigation, announced late last week that jet charter operator Executive Jet Management has received authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration to use the Jeppesen Mobile TC App for iPad as an alternative to paper charts."

All you need is one of these to strap your iPad to your knee and you are good to go! I think I would still have the paper ones for a backup, but it's probably helpful they can now use the iPad to flip between the pages. Certainly a lot easier than folding and unfolding a map while you are 20 or 30 thousand feet in the air, or higher depending on the aircraft. The press release has more details on it, or you can go direct to the Jeppesen site to see what they offer, or head to iTunes for the free app [link].
