Clean Up Some Space by Clearing Up Your Dropbox Cache

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 03:00 AM

"I use Dropbox to sync files across my Macs, but also to collaborate with others using shared folders. One day, I discovered that the disk space on my MacBook Air had dropped substantially."

Once he started poking around he found some files that he didn't really need, all within the dropbox.cache file. Simple but something I hadn't really thought about. I guess this happens in a variety of programs, such as Chrome, so it makes sense to find out where these hidden files are and if you really need them.

iPad and the File System

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...g_for_ipad.html

"Apple is dramatically rethinking how applications organize their documents on iPad, leaving behind the jumbled file system and making file access between the iPad and desktop computers seamless."

Basically it works the same as the iPhone does: apps will store all their documents within their own directory, so when you delete the app, you delete the files. But they will also let you specify which documents you want to share wirelessly. In doing so, the iPad can be mounted via WiFi and you can drag and drop the files back and forth between the iPad and your computer. There will also be syncing capability via iTunes and/or MobileMe, but those details haven't been sorted out yet. Basically they are making it easy for the average person to move things around without having to learn any file hierarchy, which to me is a pain anyway. The storage capacity doesn't sound like much, but to be honest, I have the 32GB iPhone 3GS and I have yet to run up to the storage limit. I imagine it would be the same with this device. But it sounds like a pretty good system of being able to move files in case I do happen to hit the wall.

Annoying Bug Found in Snow Leopard

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://db.tidbits.com/article/10712

"A handful of recent threads on Apple's Support Discussion forums - backed up by our own testing - indicate that Snow Leopard suffers from a bug that prevents users from opening multiple recently downloaded files simultaneously."

So if you drag a group of files, say docs for example, into your word application icon, it will only open up one of them. Testing was done with Leopard and it worked fine for several users, but when they switched to Snow Leopard they ran into the bug. No word on a fix, but you can see the comments about it on the Apple discussion boards.
