HTC Releases Their Financial Results to the Sound of Crickets

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/163002/htc...ple-in-america/

"While the vast majority of the world's tech press was focused on Apple's record-breaking quarter yesterday, HTC quietly announced its own figures."

Quietly so they wouldn't be embarrassed it appears as their results were nowhere near what Apple's were. 70% drop in profits after taking in $151.5 million during Q2, and they blame the iPhone. They used to get 50% of their revenue from the U.S. but admit that with the iPhone in business, there is no chance they will ever achieve that again.

I'm Selling These Web Sites, Moving to the USA, and I Got a Job Working for HTC. Any Questions?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Status Updates" @ 08:00 AM

I've been writing and re-writing this post in my head over the past couple of months, and that headline was the best I could come up with. It's not easy to encapsulate one of the most significant changes in my life in a single sentence. Now let's unpack that bombshell I've just dropped...

The HTC Job

I've been working with HTC, the mobile phone and tablet maker, since August 1st of this year. Being a long-time fan of Microsoft's efforts in the mobile space - and largely tying my career to those efforts, for better or worse - I've watched HTC grow from being a nameless, brandless, tiny Taiwanese ODM making Palm-sized PCs/Pocket PCs to the mobile powerhouse they are today. I've always had tremendous admiration for HTC as a company and loved their products, so when someone I knew from Microsoft got a job with HTC in late 2010, I reached out and we started talking. The rest, as they say, is history. I believe HTC is uniquely positioned to do some amazing things in the mobile space over the next few years and I'm excited to be a part of it!

Thoughts Media is currently a vendor for HTC USA, and come October 1st, I'll be a full-time employee. I have an H1B work visa, and after closing the sale of my house this weekend (phew!), I'll be moving in the near future to the Bellevue, Washington area with my wife, our two year old son and our dog, and starting my new career. To add a little extra stress into my life, we're also building a new house and will be in temporary lodging until it's finished. Oh, did I mention this is the first corporate job I've held in 13 years? This is the single biggest career transition I've ever gone through. Read more...

Google's Schmidt Generates Some Controversy

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/07/19/goog...oesnt-innovate/

"Google's Eric Schmidt spoke at a mobile conference in Tokyo and addressed HTC's early loss to Apple in a patent infringement case. Schmidt believes HTC will prevail and is "not too worried about this" case. He also added that Google will "make sure" HTC does not lose this case."

Wonder how they can make sure that HTC does not lose the case other than bribing those involved, or is that what he has planned? Jokes aside, I don't think anything is a sure thing, so I find it humorous when anyone makes bold statements such as this one. The most ridiculous statement though, was when he accused Apple of using lawsuits in place of innovation in order to compete. Keep it classy Eric.

HTC Antennae Problem? No Problem Apparently...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.insignificantthoughts.co...s-theyre-right/

"Remember Antennagate? The manufactured controversy that no one I know who has an iPhone 4 was able to replicate? Where if you held a certain spot, the phone would lose all reception? Steve Jobs noted that all phones suffer from attenuation problems and showed video of multiple brands of phones failing when held the same way."

And since it is happening to their own handset, the HD7, it is apparently not a big deal according to HTC, which is quite a different tune they are singing in comparison to how they reacted to the iPhone 4 situation. To top it off, HTC having their own problems certainly isn't drawing the attention in the press that the iPhone 4 problems brought is it? Wonder what Consumer Reports will say about this?

Lawyers? No App For That!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 04:35 PM

http://www.businessweek.com/news/20...with-nokia.html

"Steve Jobs made Apple Inc.'s iPhone one of the best-selling smartphones on the market with its touch screen, fast Web connection and access to more than 300,000 downloadable applications. Now he's adding lawyers to the mix."

Apple battles Nokia this week, and then when that fight is over, or perhaps during it, they will be crossing swords with HTC and Motorola. Interesting that they note in the article that Apple "has been the most sued since 2008, the year after the iPhone debuted."

RIM, Nokia and HTC Dispute Apple's Claim of Universal Death Grip

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple News" @ 09:30 AM

http://news.yahoo.com/s/zd/20100717/tc_zd/252846

"Research in Motion, Nokia, and HTC hit back at Apple Friday after chief executive Steve Jobs claimed that all smartphones have "weak spots" that could lead to the "death grip" problems witnessed on the Apple iPhone 4."

image source: Mad 4 Mobile Phones

Research in Motion (RIM), Nokia and HTC have all responded to last Friday's Apple claim that all the leading smartphones have "weak spots" leading to the "death grip." RIM's response was that Apple's claim was "unacceptable," and that RIM have used "innovative designs which reduce the risk of dropped calls, especially in areas of low coverage." Nokia's response acknowledged that the problem is real, but that their phones have been designed "... to ensure acceptable performance in all real life cases, for example when the phone is held in either hand." HTC's response (referring to the Droid Eris) was that "at the end of the day, customers aren't seeing a problem with our device, and that's the ultimate measure." Samsung had not responded at the time of this article. I don't know about you, readers, but I'm not eager to go back to the days of the brick-phone. I'll keep my iPhone 4, thank you!

80% of WinMo Devices Made by HTC

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2009/...-mobile-phones/

"While playing up the fact that 50 phone makers around the world have licensed the company's Windows Mobile platform, Microsoft inadvertently let it slip out that a full 80% of all Windows Mobile phones ever made have actually come from a single maker: HTC."

Why did I pick to post this? Shortly after the first iPhone was released, Don Reisinger of C-Net did an interview with someone from the Windows Mobile team at Microsoft who reminded us that Apple was the only maker of devices with the iPhone OS, but Microsoft had tons of licensees that would develop a wide range of diverse devices. The only problem is that 20% of the devices are being built by 49 out of 50 of those licensees.

I bring this up because this is yet another time that the iPhone and Apple were criticized for something when out rolls another device or company with the same shortcomings. For another shining example, see the Palm Pre and its web apps compared to the iPhone and its initial web apps model.

Microsoft loves the diversity of its platform, but no matter how you look at it, one company making 80% of your handsets isn't a diverse market.
