Military and Mac, A Love Story

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 03:00 AM

"At one time or another, everyone who putters about with a Mac computer has muttered the phrase "it just works" under their breath. the reliability and durability of Apple's hardware acted as the company's calling cared for years before the iPhone or iPod made the scene."

And the military is no different apparently. For years apparently the military has been using Macs to get the job done, be it creating or controlling their assets. You can check out the article about this usage at the MacDirectory if you are so inclined. And I thought it was just Hollywood being Hollywood when I saw all those Macs in CTU. But when it counts and has to work, it appears the military and government choose Mac, or at least the ones mentioned in the article choose Mac.

Apple, You're In The Army Now

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:00 AM

"The hottest new battlefield weapon in Baghdad is also a hot item on the home front. Apple's iPod Touch is proving to be a valuable tool to members of the U.S. military, according to a report in Newsweek. The report notes that the iPod performs many functions in this time of "networked warfare," enabling soldiers to be linked with other soldiers, as well as intelligence resources, such as aerial images from drones and translation software."

One of the biggest benefits is the linking with other soldiers in what they call "networked warfare," not to mention resources they may need in the field. Some of the resources are aerial images, translations of spoken and written Arabic, Kurdish and two other Afghan languages and using video from tribal leaders to give villagers messages. One of the best things is the training curve on its use, which is a lot shorter since they are already familiar with how the iPod Touch/iPhones work.
