Mozilla Has Another Option (They Hope) For You App Fans

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

"Apple and Google are clearly the two front-runners competing for market share in the mobile world, which is why it's no surprise we think of iOS and Android when we think of apps. With the growth of the smartphone industry also came the resurgence of native apps (thanks largely in part to Apple's App Store which still dominates the space). However, Mozilla hopes that web apps will soon mature to provide a comparable experience for end users and an even better alternative for developers."

It's no secret that some are switching to web-based versus app based access due to what they deem restrictive guidelines in the Apple App store. This would make this move by Mozilla a pretty astute one, and since it is across all platforms it would appear to be a benefit regardless of your phones operating system. The plans are for the APIs to interact with your phones address book, contacts etc so you would have the same functionality as if you were using a native app. The only difference is that it would be in your browser and would work the same on an iPhone, Android or Windows phone platform. I really don't have a preference per se, since I use very few apps that work with Internet access anyway, so if I'm using a browser or an app, as long as it functions the same why would I care? The only reason I can think of would be one of security or stability, since the apps on the iPhone go through approval process. What are your preferences? Or does it matter to you? If it does matter, I'm curious why.

Firefox Home - Half a Browser?

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:30 PM

"Last week saw the arrival of Firefox on the iPhone, but not as we know it. Mozilla's new app, known as Firefox Home, is not strictly a browser - instead it brings your desktop browsing session direct to your iPhone."

This afternoon I installed Firefox Home on my iPhone and Firefox Sync on my iMac. After installing, syncing everything took about a minute on each side, and produced 2 tabs, 638 bookmarks and 29 history items. The iPhone app has Search, Tabs, Bookmarks and Settings options. No option to view history directly, but you can get there using Search.

Firefox Patches 3.5x, Extends Support

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/146...ss_products_mac

"Mozilla on Wednesday patched five vulnerabilities, three of them critical, in older editions of Firefox and in the process extended the support life of Firefox 3.0 by at least one more month."

The latest browser, Firefox 3.6 already has the patches so you don't have to worry about this update if that is the version you have. This update fixes "critical flaws in the Gecko rendering engines, the HTML parsers and their implementations of Web Worker." Basically it allowed hackers to inject their own malware onto the machines. This update also covered a couple more moderate vulnerabilities and also extended the support for this version of Firefox until August of 2010. You can download version 3.5x here, or go ahead and get 3.6 here

Firefox 3.5 Hits: It's Pretty Fast

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:00 AM

"We've been working hard to make sure Firefox 3.5 brings you the best of the modern web. With new features like private browsing, tear-off tabs and enhancements to the Awesome Bar, plus major performance enhancements, you'll enjoy life on the cutting edge."

You immediately notice the performance increase. If you don't, I suggest you buy a dog and a cane. It really is that dramatic.

I was happy to see tear-off tabs. That was one of my most used features in Safari and now I don't need Safari to get it. Overall, Firefox has been very good to me. As frustrating as it can be, it's my go-to browser when I need to get things done and has been for the last few months (after a brief time of using Safari exclusively).

Caveat: Some of your extensions may not work, but you already knew that!
