iPad at the Oscars

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._at_oscars.html

"Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was in attendance at the Oscars Sunday night, and during the telecast the first iPad ad revealed, upon closer look, prices for some titles in the new iBookstore."

So some eagle eyes out there watching the first commercial noticed prices on some of the books, ranging from $7.99 USD to $14.99 USD. Jobs was also on hand, in his words, "To see Up win," which it did, so perhaps he was good luck.

You MacBook Price is Relative

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 07:00 AM

"While researching MacBook Pros, the folks at cmyplay produced an infographic charting the relative prices of MacBook Pros around the world. The variation is amazing."

I know the graphic is pretty large, but it sure shows the disparity in pricing depending on where you buy. Hong Kong is the cheapest, followed by the US and then up from there (of course exchange rates at the time of this article may have changed altering some of these prices but you get the idea). Brazil is the highest priced but as they say in the article, there are other factors such as import duties and sales taxes at play more so here than anywhere else that Apple sells their products. It is an eye-opening comparison though isn't it?

Paid App Prices on Steady Decline

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.businessinsider.com/ipho...-tanking-2009-2

"Apple (AAPL) is famous for keeping its gadget pricing steady. But the iPhone app store is a much different market: App developers have cut prices significantly in the last few months. And the market for $10 premium apps seems to have evaporated."

Two months ago the average price for one of the top 100 paid apps was $3.15 USD, but over the last two months it has dropped to an average price of $2.55 USD. The average price of a top 50 paid app dropped even lower to $2.39 USD from $3.63 USD two months ago. The drops are 19% and 38% respectively. Per the article, its not clear on why developers are doing this as none have responded to the request for information, but it sounds like basic economics to me: supply and demand. That may be why the $10.00 USD prices have all but disappeared from the top 100 lists too.
