Apple Certainly is on a Roll

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/65676/apple-...on-fortune-500/

"Apple's been on a roll lately. They sold a record 18.65 million iPhones in the first quarter and for the first time zoomed past Microsoft in terms of profitability. The 49,400 Apple employees helped the company earn $14 billion annually and pull 30 percent growth in earnings per share."

Apple beat Microsoft in revenue and profit, tops Google as most valued brand and now comes this little gem that says Apple is closing in on Nokia and has reached the number two spot in global smartphone maker list. Not to be stopped there though, Apple is also now number 35 on the Fortune 500 list [link]. To hit number two, they had a 114.4% growth spurt versus the industry rate of 79.7%, achieving 18.7% of the global market versus Nokia's 24.3% share.

The Quasi-Tablet?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 07:00 AM

http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2011/04...on-macbook-air/

"Apple's break-out notebook, says an analyst, may represent a new category: the quasi-tablet. With so much attention focused on the iPad, J.P. Morgan's Mark Moskowitz chose Monday to change the subject. He issued a note to clients that focused instead on the fastest growing member of Apple's Mac line: The MacBook Air."

After owning an 11-inch Macbook Air, and finding that I can indeed do pretty much everything I could do with my heavier and slower Macbook Pro (obviously not the latest model), I can totally understand why this segment is growing. I've even done some minor video editing and iPhoto processing and it is easily able to handle the tasks. And from the looks of the figures in this article, there are plenty of other people who think this and the 13-inch model are just the laptop they need. I don't know about the moniker he chooses to give it though, as it is much more than a "quasi-tablet." ONe thing is sure, you can't argue about the success of the product. What are your thoughts?

Apple Tops Microsoft in Revenue

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.maclife.com/article/news...crosoft_revenue

"If you'll recall, this past May, Apple topped Microsoft in market cap. But there was still that rascally revenue barrier that Apple still could not quite overcome. Well, that barrier is no more. Microsoft just reported $16.2 billion in revenue for the third quarter. And Apple? $20.34 billion."

The prediction by Apple was $18 billion so they were just a bit off since they hit $20.34 billion. Profit is where Microsoft is still king, bringing in $5.41 billion versus the $4.31 billion of Apple.

iPad: "The iPod Has Nothing on Me."

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 07:30 PM

http://www.businessinsider.com/char...ipod-mac-2010-7

"Apple's iPad is already huge. In fact, after just its first quarter of sales, it's already the company's third-biggest business segment."

You can clearly see the pink showing through, and that is the iPad revenue as it goes past the iPod. The iPad did so well, at $2.2 billion USD in revenue, that it made more than the iPod at $1.5 billion USD, and almost half as much as the Mac revenue at $4.4 billion USD.

Apple Store Sales Figures March Quarter 2010

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...t_new_macs.html

"Apple's same-store sales rose 8 percent in the March quarter of 2010, propelled by a 22.3 percent year-over-year increase in Mac sales, even though a MacBook Pro refresh did not arrive during the three-month period."

Much better news than last year when they had a decline of 21.9% according to the article. Non Mac revenues grew 1.2% fueled by iPads, which was the first growth in six quarters. If you like Apple products, the retail stores are the place to go to get the hands on experience for all of their products. And for those thinking about purchasing one of their products, in my opinion, it is an integral part of building the brand and expanding the reach of the product line.

How Much do Artists Really Make?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/infographi...t=Google+Reader

"This incredible infographic from Information is Beautiful really puts the iTunes business model in perspective: for the vast majority of artists, iTunes gives them a significantly larger share of the revenue than traditional retail outlets, and orders of magnitude more cash than any other digital music service out there."

When I first looked at this, after reading the initial paragraph, I thought the writer was delusional. But now that I understand the high end royalty deal is only for the big name artists, I can see the benefit to using something like iTunes for an artist. Of course pressing them yourself will get you the biggest cut but that isn't a viable option for most artists, especially those just starting out.

Accounting Changes Benefit Apple, and Others

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.businessinsider.com/appl...shoot-up-2009-9

"An accounting rule change, approved yesterday, could drive Apple's reported earnings to the moon, and could send stock prices up, too."

FASB, the Financial Accounting Standards Board here in the US, approved an accounting rule change regarding how companies keep track of subscription sales. Previously, when the sale was made, a company had to spread the income out over the period of the subscription. In the case of the iPhone, it was spread over 8 quarters. Now when the sale is made the income can be reported whole and not in sections, which will show true earnings for the specific reporting period. This is also why updates to the program were free for the iPhone but not for the iPod Touch. Will this change once they start using the new accounting rule and they start charging iPhone users for the updates? What are your thoughts?

Q3 Results for Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/200.../21results.html

"Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2009 third quarter ended June 27, 2009. The Company posted revenue of $8.34 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.23 billion, or $1.35 per diluted share."

You may recall the news item from Monday, where it was noted that the announcement on earnings should be good, based on the iPhone 3GS launch, but that you just never know. Well now we do know and it looks like Apple hit it out of the park, posting their best non-holiday sales quarter ever. The results from year ago were revenue $7.46 billion USD and net quarterly profit of $1.07 billion USD, which came to $1.19 USD per diluted share. The gross margin was 36.3% compared to 34.8% from a year ago. Apple also noted that international sales were 44% of the total revenue. The only decline in figures from a year ago was in the iPod section, having sold 10.2 million iPods which was a 7% decline from a year ago. Mac sales were up 4%, which was better than some thought they would do, some even predicted a loss in this category. However, the big jump was in iPhone sales, which came in at 5.2 million units, a 626% increase from a year ago. There is more info in the news release but suffice to say, Apple had a great quarter.

5th Avenue Apple Store Generates Some Serious Cash

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 10:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-1...subj=News-Apple

"Apple's clearly onto something with its 24-hour store plopped down in a tourist hot spot. The New York Post reports that as of sometime last year, Apple was pulling down $440 million a year in sales at its Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York City. The numbers surfaced in the paper's investigation of empty retail space along Fifth Avenue."

When you are one of the most photographed landmarks in the world, it's no surprise that you will generate the foot traffic and the dollars they bring to the location. But $440 million USD in sales is still an impressive number, even in good economic times. In comparison, according to the New York Post article, the SoHo store brings in about $100 million USD per year and they expect the new Santa Barbara store to bring in about $20 million USD. Quite a difference in revenue. The total sales figures for the 252 stores in the Apple chain this past quarter were roughly $1.87 Billion USD, a few reasons why they aren't putting a halt on the building of new stores I suppose.

Expansion Plans Scaled Back for Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 11:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-1...tag=mncol;title

"Apple's fiscal first quarter was a blowout by any standard, but it's worth taking a look at one potential concern: retail."

Even after the glowing earnings report they seem to have found a weakness in the armor, namely the retail side of things. They had a drop of about 18% in the retail sales, and have since decided to scale back expansion to 25 new stores, 1/2 of them outside the United States. Seems like a smart move in an economic climate like this. It reminds of what Starbucks went through a year or two ago, consolidating stores and scaling back expansion plans. I always thought it silly when I saw one Starbucks store competing with another one across the street. I'm not comparing this situation to Apple's, but then again, we do have 3 stores in the Portland Metro area.
