Technical Difficulties: Please Stand By

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Status Updates" @ 09:04 AM

Hi everyone - we're having some technical problems with our server, and we're trying to iron them out. It started happening last night and as of yet we've been unable to nail it down - it's impacting our virtual server that loads images, which is why our page and forums load fast, but most of the images are broken. Apologies - we'll try to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible!

Pogoplug for Your Cloud Service

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.cultofmac.com/pogoplugs-...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"For years I've been shuttling movies and TV shows between Macs at home and work using a portable hard drive."

Now it appears he has a solution with the Pogoplug. This device basically turns any USB hard drive into a cloud server that you can access from other computers as well as your iPhone (and I would imagine your iPod Touch and iPad). It costs $129.00 USD and seems like a pretty simple solution for accessibility. You can access it via a web interface for either Mac or PC. Pretty good run down on what you need to do to set it up and it gives yet another option for those not wanting to use MobileMe or another cloud service.

Security Update 2010-002

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.macworld.com/article/150...l?lsrc=rss_main

"In addition to rolling out an update to Mac OS X 10.6 on Monday, Apple also issued a security update for users of its operating system. Security Update 2010-002 is included with the Mac OS X 10.6.3 update; Leopard users can download the update separately for client and server versions of Mac OS X 10.5."

The client update can be downloaded here, and the server update here. If you want to know all about the changes with Security Update 2010-002, you can check out the release notes from Apple here. Mainly the update "focuses on closing would-be vulnerabilities that could have subjected your Mac to remote attacks, malicious code, or applications quitting unexpectedly." Seems like a no-brainer update if you need the client or server editions for OS X 10.5, otherwise it is part of the update earlier in the week.

Mac Mini Now in Server Edition

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/10/20/mini...-style-upgrade/

"Apple has given the mini a bit of a bump this morning, including a mini without an optical drive, twice the storage and of course a copy of OS X Server."

The Mac Mini line got an upgrade, more RAM, more memory and they are also offering a server version geared for small businesses. You can find out more about the Mac Mini line on the Apple site, with prices ranging from $599.00 USD to $999.00 USD for the server edition. No optical drive on the server edition though, is that a deterrent for customers? It would deter me, but perhaps those looking for a server edition don't find it necessary? What are your thoughts?

Apple Software Update Smorgasbord!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/08/31/appl...ee-new-updates/

"After the big upgrade to Snow Leopard last weekend, Apple has posted three new updates, fixing various OS and firmware issues."

You can get info on these and other updates at the Apple update page, but I'll run through the short list for you. First off, they updated the SuperDrives with Firmware Update 3.0, which is supposed to eliminate some noise issues in iMacs and Mac Minis introduced after March 2009. Next comes the Mac Mini EFI Firmware Update 1.2, which fixes some of those dreaded compatibility issues and again, only for those introduced after March 2009. The last update, available in combo or standalone, is for Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 for general operating system fixes. You can get the updates via the software update feature on your Mac or via the links above.

HP MediaSmart Streams Video to iPhones Now

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 09:00 AM

http://dvice.com/archives/2009/04/h...ediasmart-s.php

"HP's MediaSmart Server just got smarter. Thanks to a free software update, the Windows Home Server-running PC automatically converts video files for easy playback on an iPhone. HP also unveiled iStream, a free dedicated iPhone app, available on the iTunes App Store later this month, that can access your server from far afield, playing back those converted videos, photos and music files. If you have fairly fast broadband uploading, that video on the iPod might actually look pretty good."

I've always had the feeling that Windows Home Server was one of the coolest products Microsoft ever came up with. From its core functionality to the ability of developers to make plugins for it to extend its functionality, it's one of the neatest products I think they're kicking out right now. I'm actually surprised it hasn't caught on more, honestly.
