Dish to Stream Live TV on Your iDevices

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:00 AM

"Sounds really cool until you start reading the details."

I have to agree that one part isn't cool, and that is having to either buy a SlingBox or pay $200.00 to $400.00 USD to upgrade your DVR in order to use this service. The upgrade fee is a bit excessive and that is what would prevent me from using this service, especially since there are so many other options out there to access the programs I normally record for viewing later. But the rest of it I could live with, such as the $10.00 USD monthly fee (I already pay that since we have two DVRs). How about you, does this interest you at all or are the costs too much in relation to the benefit?

SlingPlayer 1.08 Released For Mac

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.powerpage.org/2009/05/sl...8_released.html

"Late Wednesday, Sling Media announced the release of SlingPlayer 1.0.8, the newest version of its software packages that allows Mac users to access their television content on their computer."

Almost everyone I know that owns a Slingbox owns a Mac, and yet Sling Media still hasn't released the Mac version of the 2.0 client yet. What's the problem, guys? You don't like us or something?

I'm starting to feel like Sling just doesn't care about its Mac customers. 1.0.8 is nice, but 2.0 has been out for Windows since at least August of last year.

Sling Pulls a Fast One

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2...slingplayer.ars

"Sling Media is preparing to debut its long-awaited SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone. But hold off on the celebrations, because you may have to upgrade to a new Slingbox in order to take advantage of the new software."

If you have the newer Slingbox SOLO, Slingbox PRO or Slingbox PRO-HD you can still celebrate because the app will work with those models. If you have an older model such as the original Slingbox, Slingbox AV or Slingbox TUNER you will have to updgrade before the app will work for you based on what the folks at Slingbox posted. I could only find the Slingbox SOLO and PRO-HD versions on their website today when I checked, glad I haven't purchased one yet so I know what to get so the app will work. Obviously this has upset current owners, but Slingbox is trying to lessen the blow by offering a $50.00 USD rebate for those that upgrade to a newer box. I'd still be upset if I owned one of the older versions since they have an mobile interface that works with devices such as the Palm Centro, doesn't seem unreasonable to put one out that works on the iPhone does it? On the other hand it was bound to happen as technology advances, can't always make things backwards compatible. Or can you?

Sling Media to Intro Sling Player for iPhone Soon

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/06/...-mac-hd-make-d/

"Remember that proof-of-concept you saw way back in June of last year? You know, that one involving SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone? Here at Macworld, Sling Media is doing its darnedest to take the spotlight away from the looming Apple keynote by announcing that said app is almost ready for consumption. It'll be demonstrating a functional version in San Francisco, and it's planning to submit the software to Apple for certification sometime this quarter."

This is something I've been waiting for since I got my first gen iPhone in 2007. The Slingbox is an awesome device and Sling has done an amazing job of getting the software out for a really large swath of devices, so we shouldn't really be surprised that they're going to come through on the iPhone; with that many users, it would be a missed opportunity of epic proportions if they didn't! Anyone else a Slingbox owner and looking forward to this as much as I am?

Update: Video goodness of the client in action after the jump. Read more...
