Valve Releasing Half-Life 2 Today

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 07:00 AM

"The always impressive folks at Valve have released the trailer above below, which will be familiar if you've ever seen a very popular Apple commercial before. And at the end, you'll also see why they've done this: Half Life 2 is coming to the Mac tomorrow today, May 26, 2010."

As part of their ongoing promotion, they are releasing games to the Mac platform every Wednesday so now it is time for Half-Life 2. Great game, and I for one will be getting it for my Mac. Not sure yet on the price, but I doubt it will be free like Portal was for a short time.

Steam Client Available, Download and get Portal Free

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:30 AM

"Today is a great day for the Mac gaming crowd, as Valve has officially released the Steam client for Mac. For those of you unfamiliar with Steam (and it may be quite a few of you if you don't look across to the PC side of the fence that often), it's a software marketplace that deals in the digital distribution of games."

This really worked well when I used to play on my Windows machine (yes, I used to have one. No really, I did!), so I'm excited to try this out on my Mac. Steam offers a very similar experience to the Xbox, with leaderboards, player matching and achievements. What it also does is work no matter what operating system you are using, it's cross-platform so it doesn't matter that your friend is using a Windows machine and you are using OS X. And until May 24th, you can get Portal free. What are you waiting for?

Mac Version of Steam Due on May 12th

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ay_12_2010.html

"Valve Software has announced the public release of its new Mac version of the Steam gaming platform will happen May 12, slightly later than its initial goal of April."

I have used the Steam engine years ago, when I used to have a PC at home, to play some of the first person shooter games and it served it's purpose. However once I picked up an Xbox 360 those days were over. Well, that and the fact that my PC died and I never bought another one. Regardless, glad they are going to offer a Mac version. This will also be considered as a "tier-1 platform" so games will be released simultaneously for Mac/PC/Xbox 360 versions. The Mac and PC users will also be on the same servers and able to play games together as part of the same "multi-player universe." Could this be the first step in the peace process in the PC-Mac war?? Let's give peace a chance!

You can find more about it at the Steam site where they have posted the press release.
