Virgin America Dumps Flash

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 07:00 AM

"As the battle between HTML5 and Adobe Flash continues to heat up, Virgin America has chosen a side: its brand new web site design ditches Flash in favor of HTML."

I read in a story not long ago that the iPhone might be a driving force in this, and now it appears that is coming to pass. Virgin wants to make their site as compatible as possible with the mobile user, specifically the iPhone, so customers can access their site as well as do mobile check-ins. How many other companies are going to make this switch? What are your thoughts?

Virgin Atlantic vs. Fear of Flying

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

"Fear of flying is nothing to laugh about. Having a panic attack while on an airplane, or not being able to even board a commercial flight because of fear, are both more common than most people would imagine. One solution is to learn how to relax, and to become knowledgeable about the sights, sounds, and feelings of flying."

My mom always said a strong screwdriver (the drink not the tool) worked wonders for her before she flew. But if you want to avoid alcohol in your quest to conquer your fear of flying, this may at least start you in the right direction. Granted, it doesn't have all the help that the UK class Virgin offers for those afraid of flying has, but maybe it is all you need. The app is $4.99 USD in the iTunes store, which is close to the price of a stiff drink, but you would get repeated use out of the app versus the liquor so the app is probably a better option.

Wi-Fi Coming Soon to Southwest Airlines

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Talk" @ 12:00 PM

"Internet connectivity is set to join pretzels and orange juice as one of the options on airlines as flight attendants roll their cart down the aisle."

The pretzels and OJ will be free, but I doubt the Wi-Fi will be for very long. I'd bet it will be free during the testing phase, but the airlines will eventually charge for it. Jet Blue, Virgin Airlines and Southwest are the only airlines planning on testing Wi-Fi on their airplanes, which will start near the end of the year. I don't fly that much any more, and when I do most of my flights are short ones, 2 or 3 hours at the most. Even on the short flights though, it would be nice to have this option. We'll see how they set up the pricing structure, if it is anything like they have done with the inflight phone calls, you can bet I'll be passing on the Wi-Fi! Besides, I can always just watch a movie.
