Unfair Subscription Pricing for iPad Owners?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/151...l?lsrc=rss_main

"If you thought online news would be free forever, perhaps it's time to think again. Rupert Murdoch, CEO of News Corp., announced during that company's third-quarter earnings call that in "three to four weeks" it would be announcing a subscription model for news and other digital content. The impetus? None other than Apple's iPad."

Not sure if this is what they had in mind when it was called a "game changer" but this is what it has led to apparently. The Wall Street Journal isn't the only one with this in mind as the New York Times and USA Today area also stating they will be charging for subscriptions for service on the iPad. I don't mind paying subscriptions on the iPad because of the convenience factor is worth it to me, but I don't want to get raked over the coals by paying the same price as print version. For instance, you can get a combo online/print subscription to the Wall Street Journal for $140.00 USD per year ($11.67 USD per month) so why is the Wall Street Journal punishing you for owning an iPad and charging you roughly $200.00 USD per year ($3.99 USD per week)? The ridiculous pricing extends to some magazines too, such as Time magazine where they charge $4.99 USD for the digital version (the print version sells for $4.95 USD). What are your thoughts?

WSJ Announces Pricing for iPad Version

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/wall-stree...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"Maintaining the pretense of objective journalist integrity by reporting in third-person upon itself, the Wall Street Journal claims that "according to a person familiar with the matter," they'll be charging you $17.99 a month to read on your iPad."

Personally, I don't read enough articles to justify this so I'm not tempted, but even if I was a current subscriber this might be a bit too much for me to pay for a digital version. The $17.99 USD per month works out to $10.00 USD less per month than the regular subscription, roughly $216.00 USD per year. What are your thoughts?

Jobs Tells WSJ How Much he Loves Flash. Not.

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:00 AM

"Steve Jobs unloaded on Flash during a meeting with Wall Street Journal executives last week, according to Gawker.Jobs met with editors of the Journal to show them the new iPad. The Journal make widespread use of Flash on its website for video, infographics, etc., and editors raised concerns about the absence of Adobe's plug-in."

No surprise here I guess, we all know how much Steve Jobs hates Flash, and I'm not such a big fan myself. It does make me curious though as to how many sites currently using Flash will adapt in order to work effectively with the iPad. I'm hoping for as many as possible, what are your thoughts on Flash?

WSJ To Charge for Content

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 07:30 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/09/15/wsj-...iphone-content/

"Say farewell to the free Wall Street Journal on the iPhone."

I knew it was too good to last. They expect to start charging for the content within the next few months, $2.00 USD per month (only $1.00 USD per month if you already get hard copy or subscribe to the online edition). I use this app on the iPhone daily, at a minimum to scan the stories for the day even if I don't have time to read them, so I'm trying to decide if I use it enough to keep it. What are your thoughts?

Wall Street Journal on the iPhone/iPod Touch

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/WSJ-app

"The Wall Street Journal iPhone App (iTunes link) just hit the iTunes Store. We've downloaded and are looking through it as we type. It isn't full of content yet but we're sure more will stream in as time goes on. Even though the video section only has six videos, we were able to Walt Mossberg's MobileMe re-review."

There are several newspaper apps such as USA Today, NY Times, LA Times and Chicago Tribune available as well on the iTunes App Store. Nice to see this one finally make it. I try to catch as much of the WSJ as I can online but I don't always have my laptop out. Free articles, the photo flipping is smooth and the video playback apparently works very well so this might be a good app to check out if you want to expand your reading material.
